Welcome, Chris! I look forward to reading your books. I'm on my first rewrite of my first middle-grade novel. Needless to say, I'm impressed with anyone who has mastered that process and pulled it off many times!

Kristin | 2 comments Hi! I am a parent of a 5th grade boy and currently am able to volunteer in his class 3 days a week. One of my favorite activities is being a facilitator/leader of Lit circles. I really enjoy discussing books with kids but even more I enjoy reading the books. The kids in the class get their choice of a book every 3 weeks. Then we meet once a week to discuss the book. It is amazing to hear what the kids think of the book they chose and to discuss it with them. The groups are usually made up of 4-6 kids. I have gotten so much out of being a lit circle facilitator. Thanks for starting this group!

We had reading circles in my school when I was a kid. What a wonderful thing to be involved in! I hope my kids' school does something similar when they get a little older.

Rhys | 13 comments Hey, everyone. I'm a teacher who's been writing for about eight years - it's taken me this long to consider myself 'good enough' (if we ever are!). I'm still pretty scattershot: short stories, poetry and articles, but I love writing for children and teenagers. I've been sitting on a couple of manuscripts for years, got some great feedback from Penguin and others but no dice, and then BOOM ebooks. Even if it goes nowhere, I've loved the process of indie publishing.

I'm at http://rhystate.com/ if anyone's interested.

I'm opening a bookstore, and needed some recommendations on what to stock for my middle grade customers, since it's been a long time since I read in the genre regularly myself.

T. Watts (twilliamwatts) | 8 comments Hello, fellow readers. I am a cryptologist of sorts, sharing my adventurous discoveries through my books. In the last decade, I have spent 100% of my spare time tracking the gnomus furtivus (a rare gnome species), and 99.9999% NOT finding one. It's that .0001% that makes it worth it all. Then there's the dwindileus vaporus, which could be invisibly perched on one's shoulder blade unawares. These creatures have spawned of unearthly means, with histories of another realm to tell. Track their winding, uncommon trails in my first book.

Also, look for my new book cover design - to be voted by goodreads members.

Sincerely, Twilliam William Watts

Krystal | 2 comments Hello everyone. I was lucky enough to stumble across this group because a friend of mine here on Goodreads commented on a thread. I'm very happy that I was lucky enough to find you because I love reading Middle Grade books. I'm also hoping that my love for MG and YA books will aide me when my daughter gets older so that I can recommend books for her (and so that I know exactly what she is reading since I will have hopefully read it as well). I'm not an author but I am an aspiring poet. I look forward to discovering new books and hearing (well reading) about what other people think of them.

Sorry if I seem a bit scattered. I've been up with a sick child all day and most of the night.

Well hopefully you'll find plenty through the group. I can suggest that you take a peek at our GMGR list in Listopia. It has a lot of books that have been discussed in the group, as well as others that have been added and voted for by members.

Here's the link ...

message 433: by Jan (new)

Jan Hurst-Nicholson (janhurst-nicholson) | 44 comments Hi everyone,
I was alerted to this group by a member on the Kindleboards. As an author, Middle Grade is not a term we are familiar with here in South Africa. We used to have 'standards' but they have now changed to 'grades' which go from Grade 0 to Grade 12. As I'm originally from the UK I've never managed to master the age groups and am more comfortable just talking about ages.
My children's books have previously been trad published, but I now have the copyright to them and have e-published them as Kindle e-readers. I look forward to being able to interact with parents and teachers, especially as I'm working on a book about a left-handed child, which also has info on left-handedness for parents and teachers. Would love to be able to get some feedback before I actually publish it.

message 434: by Jemima (new)

Jemima Pett | 1492 comments Mod
Hi Jan
I'm from the Uk and I dont cope with grades well either, even the ones they have here now! 8-12, 9-13 seems to be the age range we're talking about. Or just 8 and up since the 'up' end seems to go to pensioner age!
Both my nieces are lefties, I do some things lefthanded because I was 'told' to write with my right hand as a seven year old, so I did. Maybe it's why I'm so mixed up ;)
Welcome to GMGR!

message 435: by Jan (new)

Jan Hurst-Nicholson (janhurst-nicholson) | 44 comments Hi Jemima,
Thanks for the welcome. Good to meet a fellow lefty. There are so many things that are awkward for lefties, but they learn to cope. However, I do think it's important that lefty children realise why they can sometimes feel clumsy, and that parents can help by buying left-handed tools and gadgets, and by teaching them to do things by using a different method (especially teaching girls how to knit, which used to have me in tears at school).
Cheers
Jan

Hi Jan! I'm another southpaw (as we call them around here). My kids avoided it, so my knowledge is a bit dated, but I sure have lots of thoughts about it.

I know I stole the first decent pair of lefty scissors I was given in school, and still have them 40+ years later!

Oh, and as for knitting. I gave up and learned to crochet instead :)

message 438: by J.Y. (new)

J.Y. | 19 comments Hi, another newbie here. It's great to see so many teachers and librarians here, who have an interest in what their students read. I confess that I too have written some MG adventure books (with strong boy AND girl main characters) but I'll refrain from mentioning unless I'm on the correct forum specifically for that.
Oh, and I'm in North Carolina, I think I saw a few others from NC as well. :)

message 439: by Jan (new)

Jan Hurst-Nicholson (janhurst-nicholson) | 44 comments Hi Rebecca,
I used to get dreadful blisters from using right-handed scissors to cut out material. I was 40 years old before I finally gave in and bought myself some left-handed scissors. Now I delight in allowing unsuspecting righties to borrow them! :)

message 440: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Douglass (rdouglass) | 1680 comments Mod
Jan, you're one up on me, because I could never learn to cut any better than a kindergartener with rightie scissors. I am actually one of the more completely left-handed people I know.

I take a secret joy in putting the mouse at work on the left side. . . And leaving it there.

message 441: by J.Y. (new)

J.Y. | 19 comments At my job a number of years ago, there were about six of us in a particular aisle of 'cube-ville.' At least three of the six, if not four of them, were lefties (oddly enough). One time I tried to help one of them out with her computer and lordy, trying to use that leftie mouse just about made my head explode! :o

message 442: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Douglass (rdouglass) | 1680 comments Mod
I've never sprung for an actual left handed mouse, just put the normal mouse on the left side.

Jan Hurst-Nicholson (janhurst-nicholson) | 44 comments Hi Rebecca,
Re: left-handed mouse. My computer is set up for a left-hander and I have to keep reminding the technician when he comes to fix things.

At a buffet I like to put all the spoons/scoops back to suit a left-hander :)

I use a mouse left handed, but a touchpad right handed. Apart from the fact that the one on this keyboard is on the right... the last one was in the middle.I used to switch the buttons on the mouse, but it got so irritating when someone used my computer that I changed them back.

My mother-in-law collaborated on my most evil lefty thing. After she got a bread knife that is designed like a bow saw (so can be used only one way as there is a backing on the other side--think a bow laid on edge), I griped about not being able to use it--so she got the artisan to make a lefty one for me. No one else at my house can use my bread knife! (And I bake nearly all our bread, so it matters).
