Kelsi (essentiallybooked) | 751 comments IT IS SO GOOD!

message 152: by Kelsi (new)

Kelsi (essentiallybooked) | 751 comments So, for those of us who are tackling the GoodReads 100 Challenge, I plan on tackling A Tale of Two Cities in January. Then, I would like to tackle Ulysses in February/March. If you are interested let me know!

Other books I would propose Buddy Reads on are:
The Fountainhead
The Master and Margarita
One Hundred Years of Solitude

message 153: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Kelsi, I'm in for all of those except A Tale of Two Cities. I've already tackled that one, haha.

message 154: by Nathan (new)

Nathan (nthnlwly) Man, these books are so LONG! Is that a bad thing to say??

I'll *try* A tale of Two Cities in January with you Kelsi! But I make no promises about finishing it - haha. ;)

message 155: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments I'm in for Tale of Two Cities and Ulysses. I've read the rest. :) (I LOVED The Master and Margarita, but it took me, like, four years to read. It's one of those. Like Anna Karenina.)

message 156: by Ashley (last edited Dec 12, 2012 07:29PM) (new)

Ashley So, the consensus is...Group Buddy Read of A Tale of Two Cities for January?

Kelsi/Kara/AshleyK/Morgan - Ulysses in February/March.

Then we'll tackle the other 3 after that. :)

message 157: by Morgan (new)

Morgan | 127 comments Count me in for A Tale of Two Cities and Ulysses :)

message 158: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Ulysses will probably take us more than one month. (At least, it will FOR SURE take me more than one month.) Can we do February through March?

message 159: by Ashley (last edited Dec 12, 2012 07:30PM) (new)

Ashley Of course! I have been reading reviews about it, so two months sounds like a plan. We may even need to make it a "quarterly buddy read", lol.

@ Morgan: I got you added to the list. :)

message 160: by Morgan (new)

Morgan | 127 comments Thankyou! :)

I've heard that it's awesome from so many people and cannot wait to try it!

That's why I propose a buddy read! haha so we have peers who understand our love hate relationships with long books.

message 162: by Ashley (new)

Ashley I find long books daunting...especially classics! It took me 6 months to read Anna Karenina.

message 163: by Toni (new)

Toni | 234 comments I am in for Ulysses. Just for the record, after 2 attempts, I still haven't finished Anna Karenina. It is going on my books I will read when I retire along with Les Miz.

P.s. Tale of Two Cities SO good...but I am a Dickens fan.

message 164: by Ashley (new)

Ashley I remember having to read the first chapter of Les Miz in French in my French 3 class in high school. That was 10 years ago and I haven't thought about the book again until this year, lol. It took me nearly a month to get the first chapter to make sense in French, lol.

I'm going to try it in 2013. If I don't succeed, at least I tried, haha. I may have to do like you and wait to read those books in about 40 years, LOL.

message 165: by Ana (new)

Ana | 131 comments i would like to read les miz with you and ulysses
i don't know about a tale of two cities i don't really like charles dickens but maybe i will give it another try

i also have in mind hemingway and another fitzgerald's book
a yankee at king arthur's court
notre dame de paris
philip marlowe mystery series ...

message 166: by Lilac (new)

Lilac (lilac_wales) | 910 comments I'd like to read Les Miz some time too and I might join in with A Tale of Two Cities. I'll also join in a buddy read for A Game of Thrones if you still want to, Ashley. :)

message 167: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Lilac, most definitely! Thanks for reading it with me. :)

January:
Lilac/AshleyK: A Game of Thrones
Group Buddy Read: A Tale of Two Cities

I will get these made within the next week. :) If you have more for JANUARY, please let me know.

message 168: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Yes! Karina and I would like to read Parasite Rex : Inside the Bizarre World of Nature's Most Dangerous Creatures in January. Anyone looking for a weird non-fiction read? :)

message 169: by Nathan (new)

Nathan (nthnlwly) Kara wrote: "Yes! Karina and I would like to read Parasite Rex : Inside the Bizarre World of Nature's Most Dangerous Creatures in January. Anyone looking for a weird non-fiction read? :)"

Um, yes. Yes I am.

BTW people, this fits the Dewey Decimal Challenge for 550-599. :)

I'm new to the group and thus also new to Buddy Reads, but this sounds like fun. Put me down for A Tale of Two Cities (if you don't mind another joining!). (However, there's no way you're getting me to read Ulysses in Febrary/March...or ever, LOL.)

add me to the Ulysses in February/March.

message 172: by Ashley (last edited Dec 14, 2012 11:52AM) (new)

Ashley Gotcha, Toni! I think this one will be a Group Buddy Read as well in February/March :)

Haha, Amanda! I dread Ulysses so bad. You don't have to join if you don't want. We'll have more exciting books throughout the year. :)

message 173: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Kara wrote: "Yes! Karina and I would like to read Parasite Rex : Inside the Bizarre World of Nature's Most Dangerous Creatures in January. Anyone looking for a weird non-fiction read? :)"

I have never heard of that! I will put this down for January!

message 174: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra (hawkescream) | 153 comments I'm also in for Ulysses. I think I'll end up waiting until the end of the year to even touch it otherwise, lol!

message 175: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra (hawkescream) | 153 comments Kelsi and I are interested in doing a buddy read for The Count of Monte Cristo as well, I believe ^.^

message 176: by Georgina (new)

Georgina (georginathelibrarian) I too would like to sign up for A Tale of Two cities in January please. Should tick off a couple of my personal challenge goals :)

I am also up for The Master and Margarita at some point too, don't mind when.

message 177: by Kaitlin (new)

Kaitlin (kait-k) | 537 comments I'm up for all the classics Kelsi mentioned...I unfortunately haven't read any of them yet that I remember!

message 178: by Ashley (new)

Ashley I'm hoping to get January's buddy reads threads up by Tuesday. Be on the lookout! :)

When would you girls like to do The Count of Monte Cristo? I want to join you in that as well, but don't think I will be getting to it until about April from the looks of my upcoming books.

For the Goodreads 100 challenge, I will put those as a group buddy read for the month chosen to read them since we have so many participating, which is totally awesome! :)

message 179: by Kelsi (new)

Kelsi (essentiallybooked) | 751 comments Sorry for taking forever to respond, I've been ridiculously busy! I was thinking The Count of Momte Cristo for January, but Ashley, you are welcome to join the conversation whenever you get to it :)

message 180: by Lilac (new)

Lilac (lilac_wales) | 910 comments Does anyone still want to read Les Miz?
If anyone does I can probably read it in March/April or else in late July or August. The rest of the year I'll be having exams and mocks so I don't want to be attempting to read something so big when I should be worrying about other stuff.

message 181: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra (hawkescream) | 153 comments Meeee I am totally interested and your time frames work for me as well, because I'm starting classes in January. I probably will put the book off otherwise.

message 182: by Nathan (new)

Nathan (nthnlwly) ME! Pick ME! haha ;)

I'm up for it anytime (pretty sure it's a free download on most ereaders, so I won't have to wait in line for it at the library). I don't have school either so any time this year is totally fine by me. :)

message 183: by Squirrel (last edited Dec 31, 2012 07:12PM) (new)

Squirrel (squirrelysquirrel) | 53 comments I'm also interested in reading Les Miz (I love this abbreviation XD)! Post spring semester would definitely be preferable for me.

message 184: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (aren216) Anytime on Les Mis works for me as well. :)

message 185: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 581 comments Yes, I think I could be tempted to join in with Les Mis providing it's a little later in the year. I read it years ago and remember thinking there are some really beautiful passages as well as the wonderful story.

message 186: by Ashley (last edited Jan 02, 2013 11:30AM) (new)

Ashley I'm totally in for Les Miz as well. Why don't we plan that one for a July/August Buddy read?? I will put it on my list for then. Feel free to read it earlier if you wish and join in our discussion then. I was planning to put it on the March/April buddy read list, but seeing some of the posts...I think it will be better for a little later. :)

message 187: by Emily (new)

Emily I'd like to tackle Ulysses. Read it in college but it was sooooo overwhelming. However, I'd like to attempt this later in the year, perhaps summer? February/March is kinda early. Any takers?

message 188: by Squirrel (new)

Squirrel (squirrelysquirrel) | 53 comments Ulysses sounds tempting, though painful. Summer might work for me.

Anyone up for Jane Eyre and/or Pride and Prejudice? I can never get very far on my own, so hopefully a buddy read will be more fruitful. Neither of these are monstrously long, so I don't have a pressing preference for time frame.

message 189: by Morgan (new)

Morgan | 127 comments I'd be up for Jane eyre for any month :)

message 190: by Nathan (new)

Nathan (nthnlwly) I'm up for them! Any time as well. ;)

message 191: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Since I have Les Miz down for July/August buddy read, how about we tackle Ulysses in June? Does this sound good with everyone? We can do May/June if we have to. I know it may take longer and we do have some monstrously long books to read in this list.

message 192: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Everyone wanting to read Pride & Prejudice and Jane Eyre, just let me know which month(s) you'd like to read these and I will get them on my list. :)

message 193: by Ana (new)

Ana | 131 comments i will like to read ulysses with you, whenever you choose
pride and prejudice and jane eyre i have already read maybe anything else from jane austen or bronte sister

message 194: by Adriana (new)

Adriana | 3888 comments I could read Jane Eyre next month.

message 195: by Emily (new)

Emily Ulysses for June sounds good!

message 196: by Toni (new)

Toni | 234 comments I am up for any help I can get with Ulysses. I'm also interested in any of the books on the Goodreads 100. I've picked 12 books from the list for my personal challenge, so I would certainly join in on those and probably others.

message 197: by Kelsi (new)

Kelsi (essentiallybooked) | 751 comments Yes, I can do Ulysses in June as well :)

message 198: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 581 comments Les Mis in July/August would work for me, I think.

message 199: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Ok, it looks like we are going to push back Ulysses until June. The consensus is February is way too early in the year for a book like that, haha. I will make it a June/July Buddy read.

Jane Eyre - February
Ulysses - June/July
Les Miz - July/August

For any of the other Goodreads 100 Challenge books, let me know what month works for you and I will put it on the list. Also, if I missed any, let me know and I will add them.

message 200: by Ashley (last edited Jan 03, 2013 02:17PM) (new)

Ashley Just a heads up...I am keeping a list of the 2013 Buddy Reads in this thread.... 2013 Buddy Reads

I have January through December listed, so you can see it and figure out which would be the best month to do your buddy read. We have 5 buddy reads for the month of January, which is the most we have had since starting the Buddy Reads section. Let keep it up! :)
