Jim | 21813 comments Just to say that purely in the interests of research I have comprehensively 'spammed' the MOA forums of Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk
I've waited until April and the idea is that as no other promotions are happening and the early sales which my 'post publication' promotions have generated are now probably over, so I might just get a feel for whether MOA is actually worth the effort.

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments I've always just seenit as a place to chat to likeminded writers, but I prefer doing that on here. The bonus is we're chatting to readers too :-)

I suspect that it is probably mainly a place to chat, but it's the only place Amazon will allow authors to promote, so I thought it would be interesting to see if there is any impact when promoting.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I hang around on there - in spite of getting dissed by certain up-their bum authors. I also choose some of my books from there - though many are from here, from authors I know and from recommendations from friends here with similar taste.

There are one or two authors there who hate it that others chat. They start their own threads though, trying to get arguments going. Can't be having with that.

I confess that after playing a bit on those threads I've gone back to ignoring them. It isn't as if the discussion on them is worth the effort.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments You wouldn't be referring to a certain Mr S would you?

message 257: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments That's the man. Can't believe he thinks all that is going to make anyone want to read his books.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I've not looked at the MOA in months. Looked at the Gumbees thread several times but the rest was boring.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Unless you fancy stretching your winds and finding 'other' authors. I've found a few good ones.

Edit to add - that's where I found Jim and David S.

Serve me right eh?

He really is too much up his own behind to care I think... and there are very few people I would say that about.

Yes, without Ignite I wouldn't be on here, so [..........................................] feel free to fill in blank as appropriate ;-)

I think he's the one we all thought of when the topic was raised :-)

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Well I was thinking of someone worse, but he hasn't been around for quite a while.

Someone who wrote detective novels?

you wouldn't be referring to a cartoonishly over sexualised group of female detectives with superpowers would you?

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Not that I know of. This is a person whose surname can be used to make things.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments think more durable. comes up a lot when horses are involved.

message 272: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Pearson | 259 comments Ah, it is a different person to who I was thinking of then.
It is quite shocking how prevalent the belief is that being generally narky and uppity and spitting one's dummy out generates book sales. And there was me thinking you catch more flies with honey than vinegar :~)

message 273: by Jim (last edited Apr 06, 2013 07:08AM) (new)

Jim | 21813 comments The one I'm thinking off had an awfully long list of books and a bad attitude when it came to interacting with those who weren't actively sycophantic

(I'd never read any of his books having read his posts first)

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Could be the same pwerson then Jim.

message 275: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments Perhaps he's realised that the practice was counter productive?

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Goodness knows. Just glad he's not around any more.

Jim | 21813 comments Gingerlily (or Cyberlily..) wrote: "Goodness knows. Just glad he's not around any more."

Well I suspect slagging people of on MOA is only ever going to be counterproductive.
I've only ever really followed one thread he was on, and that briefly

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8051 comments I'm suspecting SL and MS. I didn't mind SL but I've never read his books. I thought he was outspoken but just American written down so coming across as a bit more arrogant than he meant to. I think MS is just the writer equivalent of Sheldon Cooper.

Cheers

MTM

message 280: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I read a couple of SL's in my early kindle days. Lots of errors which I think were due to optical reading or whatever it's called - but nastily mysogynistic in my view.

Jim | 21813 comments Ignite wrote: "I read a couple of SL's in my early kindle days. Lots of errors which I think were due to optical reading or whatever it's called - but nastily mysogynistic in my view."

I'm not sure whether he's especially misogynistic (interesting the word can take i or y, probably the American Greek ;-) or just nasty generally. To be fair I probably never ready enough to discover whether he belittled women more than he belittled everyone else. Certainly the way he habitually attacked, mocked and belittled one or two people put me completely off bothering with his books

message 282: by Gingerlily - The Full Wild (last edited Apr 06, 2013 02:58PM) (new)

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments he has this nasty habit of picking away at people's weak spots until they eventually explode, and then acting innocent so they look bad.

Jim | 21813 comments Gingerlily (or Cyberlily..) wrote: "he has this nasty habit of picking away at people's weak spots until they eventually explode, and then acting innocent so they look bad."

I can believe it. MS tries the same thing, but I watched that game played by competent people twenty years ago on usenet so didn't bite

message 284: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments Which as an aside does show how nice a group this one is, and how blessed we are not only to be here, but to have good moderators as well

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I very rarely respond to nastiness on the internet any more, having been bitten a few times. Its a no-win game.

message 286: by David (new)

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments I experienced this MS once, only my second posting. I nearly didn't bother again; didn't for a week or so. Then I posted a few hit and run promo spams on Amy MOA. Glad I did because Ignite picked up my book and after reading and reviewing it encouraged me to come here. Had it not been for her my indie publishing venture could easily have stopped back then.

So,there you are, you have someone to blame :-)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Aww Jim. Lovely thing to say, thank you. :)

Dunno if Simon and I do anything special though. He ignores us and I abuse authors. Whatever works, I guess. ;)

I have no idea who this MS person is. Please send me a pm. Forewarned is forearmed.

I'm more than aware of the other one.

And thank goodness you found us David. Can't imagine our group without you now, sweetie pie. :)

message 288: by M.T. (new)

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8051 comments MS has a habit of making sweeping generalisations about how a 'professional' writer acts which leave most of us painted as unprofessional. I always call him on it and highlight whichever sweeping statement makes him sound the most pompous. My rule is to not be draw into a long debate. He'll change his view from one extreme to the other in the same debate if he thinks it'll upset someone.
I'll P.M. you patti. ;-)
cheers
MTM
