Jim | 21813 comments That's the idea, the background is 'deeper' that needed, and continues to happen. Benor is currently at home doing the contented father bit, doubtless at some point down the line he will stir himself, or someone will summon him into further trouble, but until then I can concentrate on the adventures of others :-)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Isn't it a whopping big spoiler telling people about Benor's nipper?

Jim | 21813 comments Ignite wrote: "Isn't it a whopping big spoiler telling people about Benor's nipper?"

Well I assumed that as the 'Look inside' bit mentions he has a wife, a child wouldn't really come as too much of a surprise (Admittedly most fantasy and historical novels make some token gesture towards herbal contraception because pregnancy and the whole stopping for Parturition, breast feeding etc can seriously screw up your plot, but frankly the only reliable method in this sort of period was chronic malnutrition, with breast feeding a poor second.)

Damn it, I've come over all didactic again haven't I. It's not a good sign when the explanation bit in brackets is twice the length of the bit you're explaining. I did that when someone commented about the money Rothred finds on the men hired to kill him. I don't think she expected an essay on the way mercenaries and suchlike were paid in the ancient and medieval world ;-(

message 154: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments Actually, when I stop to think about it, it never even occurred to me that it would be a spoiler. Ho Hum.

message 155: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I was just thinking aloud there. It all came as a surprise to me - but I hadn't read the blurb!

Memo to self, don't waste time on the blurb ;-)

message 157: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments And another one.
'Flames of the City' is back from the Editor. This means it needs me to work through it, so that's Christmas sorted.

It's set in the same place and time as the two tales about Benor. Benor himself isn't involved but the readers will recognise other characters

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Ah, you'd only be bored without it - Queen's speech, rubbish films. Nice to have a good book to edit!

LOL
I must admit that I'm looking forward to getting into it. I've been working on a SF book but fancy getting back into the 'real' world

message 160: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments 'Flames of the City' has been edited and has gone back to the editor. The editor is bed-bound at the moment and therefore has had plenty of time to read and make more suggestions :-)
I'm now working through them and I'm hoping that we're almost at the final proof reading

message 161: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments 'The Flames of the City' is out!

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/reader/B00...

Buy now to avoid disappointment, there are only so many electrons left out there, the way they're producing e-books, they'll soon all be gone

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Jim, put the link in your new release thread as well!

message 163: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments Thanks for that, I've gone and done it. I was so worried about getting sin-binned by Patti for getting the thread title wrong I totally forgot :-(

message 164: by David (new)

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments Good luck with the new book Jim. I will read them one day, promise.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Don't feed Patti's ego Jim. She loves to set authors a-quaking.
(Not quacking - that's Geoff!)

Wait until you get deeper into 'the book' and you'll see what I've done to Patti's ego.

Jim | 21813 comments Ignite wrote: "I think Patti will be flattered!"

Just in case Patti is reading, she's not mentioned in The Flames of the City but in another project which is still some way down the track.
Whilst I'd love her to buy and read my books, I'd hate her to buy one thinking that she's mentioned.

Obviously she's the inspiration of all we writers here say or do but that is taken as read

Jim | 21813 comments Just sent the fourth 'Land of the Three Seas' book off to the editor.

'Learning a hard trade.'

Another 'stand alone' tale

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Oh, you do know how to get a girl going and no mistake, Mr Webster!

(GIRL! Pffft!)

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I second that!

Jim | 21813 comments Gingerlily (or Cyberlily..) wrote: "I second that!"

the girl or the pffft!

Mike says it will be next month before he can make a start
(I rather jumped the queue with the last one)
I'm lucky, he regards fantasy as a pleasant break from doing phd stuff for people.

Someone who likes my stuff can be any age they want

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments The fact that you know how to get a girl going...

Like Casanunda, I try harder

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments But have you got the ladder? ;)

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Have you got ladders in your tights?

message 180: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments Ignite wrote: "But have you got the ladder? ;)"

Standing just over 6ft tall I tend to be able to reach. Indeed it causes problems in our house as I put things at 'eye level' and the rest of the family claim they're lost

message 181: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments Gingerlily (or Cyberlily..) wrote: "Have you got ladders in your tights?"

never get tight when climbing a ladder

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments what happens? or do you know, not having to use them?

message 183: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments Gingerlily (or Cyberlily..) wrote: "what happens? or do you know, not having to use them?"

There are some things I have managed to remain entirely ignorant of
(like punctuation, spelling and grammar)

message 184: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments This is 'pre-edit' and obviously pre-proof read.

He snapped awake, to see a girl of perhaps fourteen standing by the cart. He stood up and joined her at the cart. He produced the packets of pins and tried desperately to remember the price Decan had mentioned. He sold her a book of pins for fifty three dregs, and then they were joined by two other girls, one of whom had obviously just done her hair and was wearing a dress that was still unfinished. It dawned on him that the delightful complications that he had discovered when helping Urlan maidens fit their mail shirts were as nothing to helping a village girl get her bodice looking just right. He heroically discussed the merits of various thickness of ribbon, attempted to help facilitate the discussion as to which colour would ornament a somewhat low cut neckline best, and was probably just about holding his own when Decan arrived back carrying another two tankards.
In the presence of Decan the girls merely purchased and left. Trulor displayed his takings and Decan grinned and passed him a tankard.
“There was a time I could sell more with my shirt off as well lad, but those days have long gone.”
He laughed at Trulor’s expression. “Don’t worry about it. Any new man round here will be checked over, observed carefully and even flirted with. Doubtless their mothers were keeping an eye out and decency would have been observed. A girl has to look to her future remember.”

When do you have 'normal' conversations?

Oops. I seem to have eaten about ten peppermint creams.

I mean eleven.

I'm partial to the odd exclamation mark myself. Otherwise, how would you know I was exclaiming? I get edgy bordering on annoyed though, when they appear in multiples!!!

My late mother was very partial to dark chocolate peppermint creams
I always used to keep an eye open of new and different types
