Not to be confused with that Gaeltacht minister they recently appointed in Ireland, who doesn't know his Erse from his elbow.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Good morning, Jim.

So, there's an IQ test doing the rounds on Facebook.

I admit I did it. Got a stupidly high number. Goes to prove I'm good at taking a test.

What are your thoughts on such testing?

message 2556: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments 126. I'm crap at spotting patterns in number sequences, always have been. But so what? All that proves is I'm crap at spotting sequences in number patterns...

Did that test or something similar about 10 years ago. Strangely I got pretty much the same result. I guess it's consistent!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Working with kids from all over the world who have vastly divergent experiences, I'm very leery of using tests to pigeon hole their abilities. Stick a label on a person and expectations can be skewed, I think.

Having said that, there is one test that I rely on when working with EAL learners that helps me to pinpoint gaps in their knowledge that need to be focussed on.

But that is what a test should be used for, I believe.

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments I tend to score badly in tests because I tend to lose interest in them half way through.

Everybody I've seen take that test got about 120 something, so I'm not impressed.

One problem with IQ tests is that they are set up to produce a result.
For example it has been decided that men and women have the same IQ so IQ tests that show anything different are 'wrong' and are tinkered with until they produce the right results.
Same with regards people from different ethnic backgrounds.
So actually they are specifically set up NOT to show certain things (it is a purely subjective whether this is right or not) but they also have the problem that they are culturally attuned as well. If you're from a background that doesn't do much numeracy, number sequences aren't your thing.
Like all tests it might be that the main purpose is to prove that the people setting them are the high achievers and the people we should listen to and take notice of. Certainly, it could be argued that degrees work like that.

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments My brother scored high on an IQ test (don't recall how high) but he is useless at anything manual, which requires a different kind of problem solving. I'm crap at tests, especially if there's a time constraint.

message 2561: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments I think a lot of it for me is that, as an accountant, I do very little actual maths. (That's why I have computers and calculators and software and stuff) so number crunching isn't something I do a lot myself.

Is it more about looking for holes in loops? ;~)

message 2563: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments Actually, I've always viewed my work in Tax as more akin to being a fantasy fiction writer, or as an artform.

message 2564: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments Partly, Jim, I think thats because people tend to associate with others that they regard as similar to themselves, both in social standing and intellect. So the people in your peer group are likely to get similar results. Which doesn't invalidate the test.

Or I could be talking toot (since it's Robert Rankin month).

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Why does he get a month?

I want a month!

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments Robert rankin month?

Why wasn't I informed?

He's brilliant!

Edit: Off to buy a fedora.

message 2567: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments Well, only cos it was his birthday and he had a massive sale.

He's self-published now, did you know?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I want a pic of you in your fedora.

message 2578: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments Fancy, fedoras and burritos on my author thread.

Strangely enough Dead man riding East by Jim Webster which covers both food and high fashion is now a mere £2.99.
Is this an omen perhaps?

message 2579: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments It was a yak burrito.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments as long as it wasn't a yuk burrito!

I've just received my tshirts for Londoncon! Brilliant!

message 2582: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I a pic of the tshirts.

message 2584: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments Well, maybe in London Jim will take a pic.

Oh wait, he doesn't do piccies: howabout one of his mental pics?

message 2585: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I'll ask Mary to get a piccy for Patti.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Oh, you're going??? I'm jealous!

Why has no one still posted any details about it???

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Dave is launching his book there in paperback and I'm going along to support him.

Jim | 21813 comments Patti (baconater) wrote: "Oh, you're going??? I'm jealous!

well we've sort of mentioned it but we're going along as trade so we'll not get to see the cool stuff and the big interviews as we'll be working or trying to find something to eat

message 2590: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments You're an awesome friend, GL. :D

You'd get more people to come to buy your books if you'd post details, Jimbo.

Sheesh.

message 2591: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments Hey if I could do promotion and sell indie books I'd not be a fantasy or SF writer, I'd be making millions selling books about how to sell books!

message 2592: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments You should do that too.

message 2593: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments Still pigged off about the firm that is going T shirts for me for Loncon.
I thought I'll go with a local firm, get something sewn in, so I get a decent shirt or two out of it as well.
OK it was a few quid dearer than off the web, but I do believe in supporting local.
It is exactly two months since I emailed them the stuff
I've gone in four times to check
Still zilch, nothing, rien
I phone today, the woman, she know nothing, but she'll find out about it and get back to me.
Strangely enough my phone has failed to ring
Tomorrow I may appear in person, but basically they've screwed me about so long that I'll not be able to get stuff from anyone else either.
Perhaps I should go and rant on the grumpy thread :-(

message 2594: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Name and shame them, Jim!

Take to twitter! Go in and speak to the owner!

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments That is rubbish Jim :(
I'm with Patti on this, if they can't produce the goods they shouldn't be in business. I could have embroidered you some tee shirts in two months!
(you might not have wanted to be seen wearing them, but that is beside the point)

message 2596: by Patti (baconater) (last edited Aug 05, 2014 10:40AM) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Heck, in two months, I could have

Ummm no.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments You could have got your munchkins to do it!

message 2598: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Yeah! Could have gone that!

I know Jim loves glitter!

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I'll be wearring my awesome geeky favourite shirt with minions and GoT design

message 2600: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments Jim, I bet if you went where I did they would be delivered in time.

Granthams of blackpool. Ask for Tshirt printing when the girl answers.
