message 52: by Janet (new)

Janet (justjanet) Gone with the Wind....I was really surprised to learn that not many of the younger generation (under 20's) have read it. It is soooo much more than the movie.

message 53: by Abby (new)

Abby | 353 comments I always loved reading but it was R.L. Stine's Fear Street and 99 Fear street series that really got me into reading... Though it was How to Kiss a Guy by Elizabeth Bernard that got me into the badboy, romance thing when I was 15. Then it was Christine Feehan's Dark Symphony that got me into Paranormal Romance

Donna Galanti (donnagalanti) | 7 comments For me it was Roald Dahl and the Narnia series. I got these books under my pillow from the tooth fairy and was transported. I was only 7 but I remember vividly and still have the original books, that I now share with my son.The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

I adore this series! Well into my 40s now I still re-read the series each year. Like coming home, to being a child again and to a simpler life. We also had hogs and on butchering day I wanted to keep the pig's tail like Laura did :)

This is one I never read (shame faced) and want to as I know its a classic and well praised

Anika (teddybear1) | 318 comments I read books like Sidney Sheldon that I borrowed from my Aunt when I was college because the TV channel were limited/non-existant. So when the movie "Twilight" came out and I found out that they were based on books that got the ball rolling to read constantly when ever I have free time.

Kiersten Fay (kierstenfay) | 293 comments When I was younger it was the R. L. Stein, Fear Street books. :)

message 61: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Rhodes For me it was the author V.C. Andrews. My mom found some of her books and I got hooked instantly. Since then I have been collecting all her books even though someone took over writing her books. Along the way I got interested in Vampires and paranormal romance and have since then loved reading.

I LOVED VC Andrews...but had to hide them. My mom took them away when she found them, especially The Flowers in the Attic series. She died and a relative is writing them now - correct? What was the name of the one book she wrote where the girl supposedly had a sister that died, an evil cousin, and a controlling father - and it turned out she was the sister?

Oh wow Tracey--I didn't think ANYONE else had the Trixie Beldon books but me. :o) The Bobwhites and all their adventures were a gREAT read for me as a kid back in the 60's. (I read WAY ahead of my grade level, so was reading these books at the age of 8, instead of as a "teen" as they were intended back then.)

My God!!
I had (actually still in fact have) the entire famous five series, I loved them. I am saving them for my son!!! After that, I pretty much read anything I could get my hands on, sometimes at the risk of having my mom take away some of them (like VC Andrews!)

Nadene (Totally Addicted to Reading) (nadz2012) | 9 comments I started of with the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys series. I then graduated to Sweet Dreams and Sweet Valley High during high school. I had my first taste of adult romance when I was in my third year of High school when I read an harlequin romance written by Janet Dailey. I was introduced to Stephen King by a friend and I got hooked. Since then I found myself enjoying reading books from the the paranormal genre.

message 69: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Charlottes web was my all time favorite when I was little, I read it all the time. Beverly Cleary's Ramona books were a big hit with me also.

Then by Jr High it was Jane Eyre, VC Andrews Heaven series, Stephen King, and every romance I could lay my hands on! In late Jr High/Freshman years my grandmother shared her Outlander books with me and they became some of my all time favorites and were reread a lot!

message 78: by Missyb (new)

Missyb | 493 comments For me it was the Argeneau series by Sands. Absolutely loved them, laughed so much. It was 2003 or 2004(I was in my 30's) and just couldn't be bothered to read books before that. Now I don't go anywhere without a book. I followed it up with Sookie, BDB, Love at Stakes, Carpathians.

I was a horse nut and these were absolutely the best books ever! Did you ever read Walter Farley's book

Man O'War by Walter Farley I have to admit to checking this out of my school library in 3rd grade and then we moved. I still have the book (sorry, any librarians out there!)

Fairytales were my first introduction to reading. And we also had a whole set of Jr. Classics. I remember reading those. Also, my mom loved to read aloud to us and she would read A.A. Milne's Now We Are Six by A.A. Milne to us and other books. We were a reading family and had to be told to put the books away.

Kristine McKinley | 3 comments So many awesome books mentioned, I feel like I've been transported back to my childhood. I don't remember the first book that got me into reading but I remember the first series I got into, it was the Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner. Loved those books :-)

message 82: by Robin (new)

Robin I can't remember the first book I loved but after grad school I just couldn't read then later I started to read Red tent, memories of a geisha, and just couldn't stop. I always loved PNR I used to watch dark shadows in the 70's when I was in first grade lol loved it.

Robin--which Dark Shadows did you watch? The repeats of the original or the remake with Ben Cross? Both were good (I watched the first one when it originally came out) but Barnabas was TOTALLY different but still the same. I know, I know, makes no sense, but it's true.

And for the rest of us who when through the "horse mad" phase--did you ever read Airs Above the Ground by Mary Stewart? it's set in the early 60's but it's a book that ANY horse mad girl would love. Especially since one of the main characters IS a horse. Oh, and what about Mr. Revere and I: Being an Account of certain Episodes in the Career of Paul Revere,Esq. as Revealed by his Horse. Another one that I loved when I went through my horse phase. (Well, as well as the books already named, plus of course, The Island Stallion and all of the books in that series.

message 87: by Kassey (new)

Kassey (wordsnmotion) | 2 comments I was taught how to read really early. I didn't really have a "kids book" stage, I kinda jumped from being read to, to small chapter books. If I had a "kids book" stage I don't really remember it. I think the first books that really got me to love reading was Roald Dahl. I read Matilda and absolutely fell in love with words. Then I went through the horse phase. I read Black Beauty, The Saddle Club books, all the standard Horse lover novels.

Then I found Into the Land of the Unicorns (Unicorn Chronicles, #1) by Bruce Coville by Bruce Coville. If I wasn't hooked on reading before this, I definitely was after.

message 88: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (ashleyjeffery) | 36 comments I can remember reading my favorite childhood series Goosebumps. From there I went on to fall in love with The Great Gatsby and decided to start reading more literature..... i.e. books from the library. Summers in high school were devoted to riding my bike with a heavy back pack full of Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Shakespeare, and anything on philosophy. Pretty heavy reading for a teenager, I trudged through stuff written/about Socrates, loved the man for some reason, still do.

Kassey--yeah, I too didn't really have a "kids book" phase either. I was older than you when I learned to read--I was 8. That was when I got my first pair of glasses and discovered that the world was not meant to be a BLUR. (That's also the year I got my first pair of bifocals. So, well, basically blind as a bat.) As soon as I could see, I started reading The Happy Hollisters and haven't looked back.

message 90: by JanBreesmom (last edited Sep 12, 2012 06:27PM) (new)

JanBreesmom (goodreadscomjanbreesmom) | 8 comments I remember going to the city library, checking out and reading the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. This was before the television series. In fourth and fifth grades my teachers read the Little House books aloud to the classes after lunch and I was secretly very proud that I always knew what was coming up next because I had already read the books.

I also liked to read the Cherry Ames Nurse books, Black Beauty, The Five Little Peppers & How They Grew, and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. When I went to Junior High in the sixth grade I was overjoyed to find there was a library at the school with hundreds of books. One of the first books I checked out and read from that library was Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist.

Jewel Kjellberg | 1 comments What book/series got me interseted in reading? It would have to have been the Cronicles of Narnia. Couldn't put down any of the books until they were all read. What a wonderful way to spend an evening. :)

message 92: by Ally (new)

Ally Shields (allyshields) | 3 comments While I've read since a small child, the books that really kept me reading were Walter Farley's Black Station series. Loved every one of them! The ones that got me into all kinds of fantasy were Tolkien's Trilogy.

message 93: by Chelsay (new)

Chelsay (rad_candy) | 8 comments When I was a teenager, while forced to read the standard school stuff I secretly read my mom's Anne Rice books, The Witching Hour series and The Vampire Lestat's, then I discovered Poppy Z. Brite. For the longest time I didn't read anything because nothing really interested me, until recently when my girlfriend Carolyn introduced me to J.R Ward and my life has totally changed that is for sure! :)

message 94: by Valkiery (new)

Valkiery | 2 comments The first book that I enjoyed to read was A Spell for Chameleon by Piers Anthony! I fell in love in the magical world and that every one had there own special magical power that only they could do. Then I discovered it was a series and that I could "live" in that world a bit longer and learn more of the creatures and plants through the adventures of the characters. :) . . . Hmmm. It's been a while since I read it. Maybe I should revisit Xanth, my first love, soon!? lol

Yup I totally remember R.L Stein too! Those were a bit risque for my 13 year old mind back then lol

message 96: by Susie M. (new)

Susie M. Hanley | 13 comments I have always been a reader. My parents were really good about keeping shelves full of books and sometimes I would spend hours sitting in front of it, picking out books to take back to my room. I liked it so much, my mom bought me this cute little tape player and a bunch of books on tape and I would fall asleep listening to "Around the World in 80 Days" by Jules Verne. From there it was just a matter of time. Pearl S. Buck was one of the first authors I fell in love with, followed by Steven Alten. "MEG" was one of the first books I ever read that kept me on the edge of my seat for the whole book. Then my mom's friend handed my Harry Potter and it was all over...

Paganalexandria | 238 comments This teen series called Sweet Dreams P. S. I Love You (Sweet Dreams, #1) by Barbara Conklin All's Fair in Love (Sweet Dreams, #21) by Jeanne Andrews Wrong Kind of Boy (Sweet Dreams, #88) by Shannon Blair started my love of romance novels.

message 98: by Isis (new)

Isis Persephone | 39 comments So many books have been mentioned that I loved! I can't remember a time when I didn't read, and I could never get enough! I do remember the first book I read multiple times though: Watership Down. Freddy Krueger had nothing on General Woundwort as far as I was concerned! I've read it a dozen times and still love every bit of it!

message 99: by Megan (new)

Megan (megandurrence) | 78 comments For me, I remember Goosebumps and Junie B. Jones the most. But I went through a time when I hated to read. I only read in middle school when I had to (books like The Woman in the Wall and Mad, Mad Monday), but I just flat out refused to read for fun. Then Twilight came to theaters when I was in High School and I wanted to know what was going to happen, so I read New Moon. Then began my journey to becoming the reading addict I am today :)

(I've read over 250 books since then)
