What Else Are You Reading - March 2012 Edition

I'm hoping to push through Wild Cards so I can get back to my queue, but work is entering a crazy phase which probably won't end until the end of July or so. Luckily, I have a little bit of traveling ahead of me so maybe I'll be able to read more then.

It's so far quite different to either Swordspoint or The Privilege of the Sword but it's interesting.

No more novels but it looks like there are a bunch of short stories scattered around out there . . .

if you really want to know about who katniss chooses and/or how the rebellion turns out. The other 2 books tolerable.

Terrific books. Michael is still on Goodreads and is a member of this very discussion group.

I'll have to space them out so I can keep coming back for a fix.

I loved
[book:The Midwich Cuckoos, such an enjoyable read from start to finish. I really should read more of John Wyndham's works. I've only ever read that and The Kraken Wakes, which was great too until the mediocre ending.

Starting up on Boy's Life after some very nice recommendations ;-)

Wild Cards was a favorite of mine from the 80's, and I've just started rereading them. It's great to see that there's still interest in the series, and the Kindle version had some new stories added to it! Terpkristin, I hope you continue to enjoy the series.
I've gone way off the reservation with
Republic, Lost: How Money Corrupts Congress--and a Plan to Stop It. Also reading some Lovecraft stories here and there, and trying to decide if I should keep going all Sword-y with my next book or get on the Laser train.
Just finished Paprika which was disappointing. Watch the excellent animated film adaptation instead (yes, a film that's better than its source novel)!
Starting In the Night Garden (Orphan's Tale, book 1) by Catherynne M. Valente.

Watch out for the sex powered incubus in wild cards (2nd book i think?) that was the end of my interest in the series

Before that I was reading Sabriel (on pause) and several Patricia Briggs novels from the Mercy Thompson series.

I had the same reaction to Tsutsui's The Girl Who Leapt Through Time -- both the anime and the 2010 live action version are far superior to the original novel. (There are something like half a dozen movies based upon the book, but those are the only two I've seen.)

Fuzzy Nation by John Scalzi
The Way Of Kings by Brandon Sanderson
The Sign Of Four by Arthur Conan Doyle
A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs
The Keep by F. Paul Wilson
Elantris by Brandon Sanderson
And I just started The Warded Man by Peter Brett
I should be doing my accounting homework...

Ah, I liked the anime version of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (though not as much as Paprika) and haven't read the original book, but that's interesting that it sounds like another case of an animated film improving on its source. Half a dozen film adaptations? So the original book was a big-seller in Japan, I'm guessing?

According to Wikipedia, the book is a common reading assignment in schools. They list two TV series, a TV movie, an episode of an anthology series, three live action theatrical films, the anime and three manga.
The anime and 2010 films are both sequels to the original story, but with totally different plots and continuity even though the same actress portrays the main character in each. The film just came out on DVD, and I think it's much better than the anime.

The entire book The Hunger Games is shorter than the dramatis personae in A Game of Thrones.

LOL

I personally felt that the hunger games did not live up to the hype. Books 1 and 2 were good but not great and I thought book 3 was the weakest in the series.
Game of thrones is excellent but every book is rather large. I think the hunger games trilogy is shorter than some of the later books in the game of thrones series.

I started God's War which is good so far. I didn't think I would like the Bugtech as some have called it but its grown on me and its an interesting setting.

Before that I finished Ash, which was pretty much what I should expect from YA, i.e. disappointing.

Going to read the new Dark Tower novel coming out in about a month?

Jlawrence, I'd love to hear what you think of Valente. I love her short stories, less so her novels.

So did I. I'm already 10% through it. Knowing my reading habits, though, my lead will evaporate soon enough. ;)

I just finished up the Hunger Games books, and my Vaginal Fantasy hangout book, Slave to Sensation.
I also picked up all the John Carter books, and started A Princess of Mars.
I am also about 1/4 of the way into A Feast for Crows, and The Lies of Locke Lamora.
Whew! lol
