What Else Are You Reading - March 2012 Edition
I finally finished The Lies of Locke Lamora in time to start the next club pick. I'm also a bit more than halfway through Wild Cards, which I'm listening to. I'm hoping to push through Wild Cards so I can get back to my queue, but work is entering a crazy phase which probably won't end until the end of July or so. Luckily, I have a little bit of traveling ahead of me so maybe I'll be able to read more then.
Wrapping up Jonathan Maberry's The King of Plagues today before trying out The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. Maberry's books are fast paced, action packed and a fun ride. They have serious stuff going down, but the characters don't take themselves too seriously. Lots of good humor.
I'm reading The Fall of The Kings, it's my last Riverside book (though second in publication order), so that's a little sad. It's so far quite different to either Swordspoint or The Privilege of the Sword but it's interesting.

No more novels but it looks like there are a bunch of short stories scattered around out there . . .

Decided to pick up The Midwich Cuckoos for a quick read and also because it was the pick for a horror book club I've joined but never read with. I'm a few hundred pages into A Storm of Swords. Listening to Leviathan Wakes and Watership Down: A Novel.
I'm also giggling my way through 24 Frames Into the Future, a collection of John Scalzi's online columns about SF/fantasy films. Quality entertainment!
I've been reading Heir of Novron by Michael J. Sullivan. He was a goodreads author a long time ago and published a bunch of his books as an indie but they recently all got published I think? I didn't read the originals so I don't know. But these new ones are great.
I've just finished reading the Hunger Games today and I thought it was great, but I don't know if I should read the rest of the trilogy as everyone seems to be hating on them.
Ewan wrote: "I've just finished reading the Hunger Games today and I thought it was great, but I don't know if I should read the rest of the trilogy as everyone seems to be hating on them."if you really want to know about who katniss chooses and/or how the rebellion turns out. The other 2 books tolerable.

I'll have to space them out so I can keep coming back for a fix.
This month I'm reading the Hunger Games trilogy (yesterday night I started the last book). If I have time after that I'll try to get started with the second book in the Gentleman Bastards series.

[book:The Midwich Cuckoos, such an enjoyable read from start to finish. I really should read more of John Wyndham's works. I've only ever read that and The Kraken Wakes, which was great too until the mediocre ending.
I just finished The Way of Kings Part Two and I absolutely loved it ;-)Starting up on Boy's Life after some very nice recommendations ;-)
terpkristin wrote: "...I'm also a bit more than halfway through Wild Cards, which I'm listening to."Wild Cards was a favorite of mine from the 80's, and I've just started rereading them. It's great to see that there's still interest in the series, and the Kindle version had some new stories added to it! Terpkristin, I hope you continue to enjoy the series.
I've gone way off the reservation with
Republic, Lost: How Money Corrupts Congress--and a Plan to Stop It. Also reading some Lovecraft stories here and there, and trying to decide if I should keep going all Sword-y with my next book or get on the Laser train.
Just finished Paprika which was disappointing. Watch the excellent animated film adaptation instead (yes, a film that's better than its source novel)!
Starting In the Night Garden (Orphan's Tale, book 1) by Catherynne M. Valente.

Watch out for the sex powered incubus in wild cards (2nd book i think?) that was the end of my interest in the series
I'm currently reading Dreadnought by Cherie Priest. Before that I was reading Sabriel (on pause) and several Patricia Briggs novels from the Mercy Thompson series.
Jlawrence wrote: "Just finished Paprika which was disappointing. (There are something like half a dozen movies based upon the book, but those are the only two I've seen.)
I've had a busy March so far. I've read:Fuzzy Nation by John Scalzi
The Way Of Kings by Brandon Sanderson
The Sign Of Four by Arthur Conan Doyle
A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs
The Keep by F. Paul Wilson
Elantris by Brandon Sanderson
And I just started The Warded Man by Peter Brett
I should be doing my accounting homework...
The God Virus, probably start on The Magicians (for here) or Do androids dream of electric sheep after.

Ah, I liked the anime version of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (though not as much as Paprika) and haven't read the original book, but that's interesting that it sounds like another case of an animated film improving on its source. Half a dozen film adaptations? So the original book was a big-seller in Japan, I'm guessing?

They list two TV series, a TV movie, an episode of an anthology series, three live action theatrical films, the anime and three manga.
The anime and 2010 films are both sequels to the original story, but with totally different plots and continuity even though the same actress portrays the main character in each. The film just came out on DVD, and I think it's much better than the anime.
Earlier this week I read Agent to the Stars and loved it. And I just started The Magicians. Although it has gotten a lot of mixed reviews, so far (25% of the way through) I am really enjoying it.
I just got and started reading book seven and eight of Malazan, even though I only have read the first two books in the series.
Just finished The Bookman and enjoyed it immensely. I've just started The Worshippers And The Way and hope to finish the next and final volume of the Chronicles of an Age of Darkness, The Witchlord and the Weaponmaster by the end of the month.
Hunger Games or Game of Thrones? Which one should I start first? I just finished a fantasy novel called Legend of the Phoenix: Rise of Crescent. It was amazing.
Mike wrote: "Hunger Games or Game of Thrones? Which one should I start first? I just finished a fantasy novel called Legend of the Phoenix: Rise of Crescent. It was amazing."The entire book The Hunger Games is shorter than the dramatis personae in A Game of Thrones.
Joseph wrote: "The entire book The Hunger Games is shorter than the dramatis personae in A Game of Thrones. .."LOL
Mike wrote: "Hunger Games or Game of Thrones? Which one should I start first?"I personally felt that the hunger games did not live up to the hype. Books 1 and 2 were good but not great and I thought book 3 was the weakest in the series.
Game of thrones is excellent but every book is rather large. I think the hunger games trilogy is shorter than some of the later books in the game of thrones series.
Last night I finished Reap the East Wind by Glen Cook and started An Ill Fate Marshalling, the next in the series.
Just started reading a book called Realms Unreal. So far it's been fairly interesting. I don't think it has a very large fan base yet. I've never heard of the author Audrey Auden.
I finished Dead Harvest which was okay but nothing special imo. I started God's War which is good so far. I didn't think I would like the Bugtech as some have called it but its grown on me and its an interesting setting.
Just finished The Warded Man yesterday. Now I need to seriously stop reading novels for a while and focus on college. I need to read The Lies of Locke Lamora and The Magicians to actually join the book club though.
I decided DarkMarket: Cyberthieves, Cybercops and You has been sitting around in my living room too long and decided to crack it open this afternoon. Before that I finished Ash, which was pretty much what I should expect from YA, i.e. disappointing.
I didn't start of The Lies of Locke Lamora with the book club. I was in the middle of The Name of the Wind. I went ahead and picked up The Magicians. Not sure about it yet.
Ken wrote: "Started The Magicians early. STILL on the audio of the final Dark Tower book."Going to read the new Dark Tower novel coming out in about a month?
I started Marooned in Realtime, an older Vernor Vinge, for another book club; it's a re-read. I still have The Kingdom of Gods to finish, and Locke Lamora to listen to (although I still haven't gotten used to the narrator).Jlawrence, I'd love to hear what you think of Valente. I love her short stories, less so her novels.
I have just started the audiobook for The Name of the Wind. I have so much catching up to do...new to this genre (sort of) and feel like I do not have enough time to read it all. I'm thinking I might add The Hunger Games next or if anyone has any good suggestions (Game of Thrones, I'm up to date; Elliot's Crossroads, done; Tolkien all read; and Pratchett's Going Postal. Enjoyed all!
Just finishing up The Road to Dune on audiobook and since S&L seems to be going nowhere with the L part, I went ahead and started The Forever War. Really enjoying it so far. Yay.. spaceships !
Ken wrote: "Started The Magicians early."So did I. I'm already 10% through it. Knowing my reading habits, though, my lead will evaporate soon enough. ;)
Finished Assassin's Quest and A Princess of Mars. Started on The Gods of Mars and The Magicians on Audible(about 1/3 way through). Still trying to get back to Being Geek.
I finished Infidel which I througly enjoyed and I can't wait for the next book in the series. If you want a very unique science fiction setting with good action the series is well worth it. I really feel book one has a far lower rating than it deserves.

I just finished up the Hunger Games books, and my Vaginal Fantasy hangout book, Slave to Sensation.
I also picked up all the John Carter books, and started A Princess of Mars.
I am also about 1/4 of the way into A Feast for Crows, and The Lies of Locke Lamora.
Whew! lol
