Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Fiona - no sorry Montana does not count as the country that would be United States Of America so one of your initials would have to be a U to use it for the 25 point initial country task.

Andrew - anything where you can determine the character to be black/African American is okay - you can double check with me when you have a book in mind.

message 1857: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie | 271 comments My weakness in this challenge is that I have the bad habit of reading more than one book at once. Right now I'm in the middle of four books, so it takes me a bit to get new points, but on the upside I rack up a lot at once.

5 Points:
4. Winter Weather Word: Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow by Jessica Day George

A retelling of East of the Sun, West of the Moon. A decent bit of YA fluff, but the solution came a bit too easily. Edith Pattou did it better in East.

10 Points:
8. Royal Title Book: Four Queens The Provencal Sisters Who Ruled Europe by Nancy Goldstone

Really interesting history book. I learned a lot about 13th century Europe and I definitely think a historical fiction should be written based off it. It would put The Other Boleyn Girl to shame.

Total Points: 335

By the way, congrats on hitting the 300 mark Sara!

4. It’s Winter: Read A Book Whose Title Contains a Winter Weather Word – i.e. Blizzard, Snow, Ice, Sleet, Icicle, Snowflake, Frost, Freeze, Slush, Flurry, Chill, Or Hail.
The Ice Museum In Search of the Lost Land of Thule, Joanna Kavenna.

message 1860: by Sara ♥ (last edited Feb 12, 2009 01:18PM) (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) I finished Sticky Fingers by Niki Burnham last night. Holy intense book, Batman! I was NOT expecting it to end like that! But that is my last 10-point item (body part), which brings me up to 310 pts.

Next, I think I'm going to read Ever by Gail Carson Levine. I'm kinda worried--my sister said it wasn't very good. BUT, I put 10 book titles in my hard hat, and that's the one I drew out (I have pictoral evidence)... so that's the one I'm stuck with.

I'm going to try and read Breaking Dawn this weekend. I wonder if I'll like it as much the second time around... Stephenie's books are usually better the second time. (I just wish The Host was over 700 pages, because I'd rather read it again.)

7. Question Word Title: What's the Matter with Kansas? How Conservatives Won the Heart of America by Thomas Frank.

Very interesting and I learned a lot. I actually found myself a lot more sympathetic to the conservative point of view than I ever have been (wierdly enough, as this is a pro-liberal book).

Total Points: 340

Sara--I read Ever and was disappointed mainly because Gail Carson Levine has never, to my mind, ever written something nearly as good as Ella Enchanted. I keep hoping I will love her new book as much as I love that one, and I am always disappointed. But Ever wasn't a bad book. I'd give it a solid B.

Also, almost done with Eat, Pray, Love. Am conflicted about how I feel about it.

message 1863: by Sara ♥ (last edited Feb 12, 2009 09:01PM) (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) Bonnie--I have this incredible ability to forget EVERYTHING I ever read (which is nice, because I can reread books over and over again), so I don't remember much about Ella Enchanted. I won't have much problem with comparing the two.

I didn't go work out today, so I started The Last Jihad instead of Ever . (The Last Jihad just didn't seem like a work out book, you know?) It's pretty interesting so far--I'm only 2 chapters in, since I took a break to go to Target and buy conversation hearts before they're all sold out... :) I asked my husband if there's a love story in the book, and he said no. I wasn't really expecting one, but I'm still sad about it. Explosions are great and all, but kissing is better. :)

3. Book With Religious Word (God): American Gods by Neil Gaiman.

A lot longer than I had expected before I bought it (nearly 600 pages!), but it kept my attention and when I had to put it down I couldn't wait to pick it back up (and I kept meaning to put it down to do something else, but I found myself unable to do that and had to keep reading). There was one subplot about a small, rural town and disappearing children that one of my favorite shows, Supernatural, stole. So I knew right away what would happen with that subplot. But I never saw the twist in the main plot coming!

It is! This challenge (Winter) only has 2 weeks left; the next challenge (Spring) starts on March 1st, and will have all new categories. You can do a few of the current tasks now if you don't want to wait until then. There are a bunch of people who didn't start very long ago.

Liz M 5. Read a book by an author that died this year: Jealousy by Alain Robbe-Grillet

Wow. This book was so different and astonishing. It should have been something I didn't like; I have a tendency to skim descriptions to get to the action and this book is all observation. But it's stunning in a way I can't explain. Now I must track down a dvd for a movie he wrote/directed....

I love these challenges!

10 Points:

4. Book with Love, etc. in the title: Eat, Pray, Love One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia by Elizabeth Gilbert.

I'm still conflicted about this one. On the one hand, I really liked learning things about the countries she visited, about the Italian language, history of meditation, etc. And the writing was typically very engaging and occasionally funny. On the other hand, I kind of hated the author and found her selfish and self-absorbed (and I KNOW it's a memoir and all about her. But I read Maya Angelou's memoir and she never came off for a moment as self-absorbed). I think my biggest problem is personal; I just came out of a relationship whose aftermath mirrored Elizabeth/her ex-husband/her lover. And I am in her ex-husband's position (my ex got a new relationship so fast it gave me whiplash). You don't want to see your recent ex reflected in the author you're reading. And every time she whined about missing her lover (screw her ex-husband!) I wanted to slap her.

Liz (Bklyn)

message 1895: by Elizabeth (NC) (new)

Elizabeth (NC) | 209 comments Congrats to El!
I'm still working toward 200--and I thought I was an avid reader! I don't know how you guys do it. I'm incredibly impressed.

I have a couple of questions for Cynthia.
1. Can Death's Half Acre by Margaret Maron count for the book about Politics/Politicians? I think it is kind of a stretch, but the person who is murdered is the head of the County Commisioners and the scandal has to do with paying her off and getting favors for local decisions. (Also the main character is a judge and talks a lot about local politics in the community.) Just checking.

2. Can Icy count as a winter word?

Thanks.
