I'm from Ontario, Canada. I read voraciously in my teens and early twenties. I just started reading again last year. I'm in my mid-40s.
When I figure out what I don't like, I'll respond with some favorites.
Now stop bothering me, I have some catching up to do!

I also write and have my first book out.
You seem like an awesome bunch by the way, really like some of the threads here. Shame I missed the September Dragonbone Chair reading. One of my fave fantasy series of all time.

He works from home spending hours each day writing, and I'm currently busy on my second novel in, The War on Magic series, due out in mid 2012.
In my spare time I run, take my dog on walks, play with my children and watch far too many films. I'm also passionate about VW campers and love nothing more than taking my 1973 bay to VW festivals in the summer.

My favorite fantasy authors are Tolkien, Robert Adams and Rowling.
At this moment I am mostly reading Science Fiction and Detective novels. I would like to read more fantasy but for a long time everything felt like a Tolkien rehash.

I'm Leah from the Atlanta area. I'm brand new to Goodreads and still trying to find my way around.
I came to the fantasy genre through my husband who is a huge fantasy reader (he rarely reads anything else). He read the Black Company series and asked me to read it so he'd have someone to talk to about it.
And now, here I am!
My favorite fantasy authors are Glen Cook, Joe Abercromie, Paul Kearney, and my husband who is a brand new author and who I won't link so as not to spam the group. :)

It's rapidly turning into a HUGE group. :)

I'm Terry, originally from Barbados, but now living in NYC. I read, write and lately tend to hit gym pretty often.
Fantasy is where everything happens for me. My reading went from Br'er Rabbit as a child until I graduated to my father's book. Don Pendleton's Executioner Mack Bolan and Louis L'amor's Sackett Westerns. Then one day I found Asimov and Tolkien and I dreamed. I dreamed of worlds and peoples and creatures, and I've been dreaming ever since.
That experience made me love fantasy. I could immerse myself. Favorite authors? Where to start? I would say Robert Jordan, George R.R. Martin, Brent Weeks, Jon Sprunk, Brandon Sanderson, Terry Goodkind, Brian Lumley, Jim Butcher, Raymond E. Feist, David Gemmel just to name a few. To be honest there aren't many authors I dislike, but if I had to name one, it would be Terry Brooks. Yeah I know, I dislike an author with the same first name as myself. My issue with Brooks was that while I liked the stories and the worlds he created, he caught me at a time when I loved magic and action beyond all else. His magic and his action were both a little bland for me when I read Shannara and I never went back to him after the first couple books.
If there's one author I could punch in the eye and tell him get it moving already and give me some conclusions, despite loving his books, it'd be GRRM.

I'm Max from Hamburg, Germany. At the moment, I am a student at the University of Hamburg (Computer Science). In my spare time, I have recently been infested with the fantasy bug again, and a big part of the reason this happened was GoodReads.
When I was a lot younger, I used to read a lot of fantasy and science fiction books (Notably the "new jedi order" series with 19 parts. And regardless of what the reviews say: I enjoyed it a lot). Then, I got The Magician's Apprentice, followed by the black magician series by Trudi Canavan. Afterwards, someone gave me The Name of the Wind and I loved it. It is still one of my favourite books, on a second place after the sequel, The Wise Man's Fear, and I would be surprised if a book would manage to beat those two, with the possible exception of the next part of the series.
So, my favourite Authors are Patrick Rothfuss, Trudi Canavan, Terry Pratchett, Walter Moers (Yes, that guy), and I am always ready to find new ones.
After I signed up with GoodReads and started to browse the recommendations, I realized that there were quite a few fantasy books that I had never heard of but that seemed very interesting to me. So, I blame goodreads for the 50 Bucks I spent on books within the last week, but it was worth it. I just finished Elantris, and next up is the The Night Angel Trilogy, followed by A Song of Ice and Fire 4-Book Boxed Set. Really looking forward to reading it.
So, all in all, I am glad I signed up and I am looking forward to finding a lot of new, awesome books with all of you. If you find your interests to match mine (or need someone to talk), dont hesitate to send me a friend invite.

Hi guys, I'm from Brazil and I grew up readind J.K. Rowling, C.S. Lewis, Garth Nix and nowadays
I read Stephanie Meyers, P.C. Cast e Kristin Cast(yes, I got this fever too.)
But my favorite serie is Harry Potter!
Well, actually, I'm a student of international relations, and I have a small project for a class this semester and I need two people from other countries to participate.
Basically, we would send each other small book written by classical authors from their countries.
So, after we exchange the books, we would give our impressions about the reading and the procedure.
Quote the favorite parts in the book, and so on. Shouldn't take too much time, though. Just read and comment.
If one of you want to participate, it would be greatly appreciated.
Is an excellent option for those who love adventure without leaving home, it is mostly an opportunity to know other cultures, styles and each other.. We have great writers here in Brazil, I think you would like our literature :)
Hugs,
Andressa

My name is Aaron and I am from the Chicago area and love reading a good fantasy novel. When I was a kid I read everything from Piers Anthony to lord of the rings, dragon lance books, as well as Stephen King and loved every minute of it. As an adult some of my favorite authors are Robbin Hobb, Martin, Neil Gainman, and Terry Pratchett. looking forward in talking with you all about books we read here.
Currently reading "Game of Thrones"....

Coming to you from Brisbane, Australia. Looking forward to some great recommendations from this giant group.
Fantasy's been my genre of choice ever since I was a kid reading Enid Blyton. I eventually progressed into Diana Wynne Jones, David Eddings, JK Rowling, Kristin Cashore, Garth Nix, Terry Pratchett and the like. I love stories with strong female leads. Or even just strong female characters. Weak-willed pushovers with dishrag personalities drive me nuts.
When I'm not reading I write things for money (corporate communication, unfortunately), play video games and visit my friends and family, who're haphazardly strewn around the country.
See you around the forum :)

I find reading a good way to escape from my prison! (When i say 'prison', i mean i get in trouble sometimes! XD)
Sometimes i help my friend with her story/stories, but most times i'm reading books from my library!

I am Tim from sunny(note the sarcasm) London, and thought I should probably join a forum or two with like-minded people as it's been too long. I love classic fantasy like Tolkien(Silmarillion is a favourite), as well as more modern fare like Golden's Veil Trilogy, Autumn Castle, etc. I also love the crossover into the weird, especially legendary giants like Blackwood and Lovecraft.
Oh, and I write the stuff as well, though as yet it's short stories fairly regularly being published...novel yet to be picked up by that slavering agent or publisher!

I've just launched my website: http://hobbwhittons.com/
Really pleased with the magical illustrations Cambridge (UK) artist Sarah Dawes has done. Awesome!
Hope you'll drop by and take a look. Looking forward to chatting to kindred spirits who need to frequently escape this sphere and head for others!
All the best from Wadjamaat!

Favorite authors:
John Scalzi
Margaret Weis
Tracy Hickman
Alfred Lord Tennyson
Charles Dickens
Greg Bear
Eric Nylund
Henry David Thoreau
Ralph Waldo Emerson
George R.R. Martin
J.R.R. Tolkien

My favourite characters were Tasslehoff and Sturm. The books were really easy to read and a great way to get back into reading. I have to admit though, I really don't get why so many people that have read these books love Raistlin so much! I can't stand him, or his brother - they both annoyed the hell out of me, and I'm still refusing to read the Twins trilogy that followed Dragonlance!

I really liked Sturm and Tasslehoff. I'd have to agree that they're my favorite characters, as well! I didn't care for the twins, either. Dragonlance lovers, don't be afraid to add me as your friend!
John wrote: Hi Gianni and Chris. Welcome to the group!"
Thanks, John!

I just finished reading "The Domino Men" by Jonathan Barnes and really enjoyed that. I also tend to like 'classic' stuff.

George R.R. Martin
Robin Hobb

I am Gage, I "hail" from Bakersfield, CA but I currently live in Fresno, CA as I am a freshman at Fresno State. I am 18 years old and have been a voracious reader since my mom read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone with me when I was around 6.
I read almost strictly fantasy, the closest I have gotten out of that genre is The Hunger Games (which I highly recommend to anyone who likes good literature, please read it before the movie comes out!). I LOVE a long book, unless it is slow... I love deep books, like The Inheritance Cycle, with tons of developed characters and places. And I undeniably love books with MAPS!!!! Not to mention that I also love series.
A few of all time favorites include:
The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling
The Hunger Games Series by Suzanne Collins
The Magician & The Magician King by Lev Grossman
The Hobbit (I have yet to read LOTR, I know, I know...) by J.R.R. Tolkien
The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini
The Pellinor Series by Alison Croggon
My Recent Reads:
The Magicians (beautiful)
The Magician King (beautiful)
Wizard's First Rule (great read)
Stone of Tears (great sequel)
Blood of the Fold (slow at first but the last half makes up for it)
Witch & Wizard (good, focused on a younger audience but still good)
The Gift
The Naming (great series, truly artistic and creative)
The Riddle
The Crow
The Singing
Eragon (reread)
What I am Reading Now/Whats On Deck:
Eldest (I am reading this currently)
Brisingr (In case you haven't guessed, I am rereading the Inheritance Cycle before the last book comes out on Nov. 8th)
The Name of the Wind ( I read the first few pages, was immediately enthralled, then realized how expansive the tome was and KNEW that I would be captivated and too hungover from that novel to properly study Alagasia before Inheritance was released)
Tigerheart (got it on uber-clearance from b&n, not even sure what its about...)
The Edge of Reason (same as Tigerheart)
SOOOOOO- that is me, please contact me about anything! I love love love to talk books and if you are looking for recommendations I would be glad to give them (I have read far more books than I have cited above). And if you have any recommendations for me based on what I have read please let me know because I read more than I sleep!!!!!
