Ace (aceonroam) | 19 comments Spreadsheet lovers!!!!!!
There is one here for book, reading and challenge tracking that is kind of advanced. It opens with a youtube video, but there is a link to the spreadsheet in the description which you can download to you computer. The video explains each sheet and how to manage the data, which you could skim through.

Ha Ha Yes she's got it bad, quite a lot of info on that one!!

Not quite so advanced but I cover what ive read & whats in my trl which is sorted via genre/shelf that I assign it & I read in cycles (24 books) and track them as I like to mix my genres up & keep on top of series.... All very organised & all VERY sad I know :D

Ace (aceonroam) | 19 comments You've got it bad Andy, admit it LOL.
I normally just use GR, but this year I am going to read 165 books and enter into a few challenges so I hope devise a tracker with less data than the girl in the video but more than GR is allowing.

Plus, I fret that GR will just be closed one day when I go to logon, and all my bookshelves will be gone with it. I export my books into a spreadsheet regularly so I have a backup. I know, I have no trust.

message 14956: by Andy (new)

Andy | 1511 comments lols perhaps....... but exactly why I started a s/s too, GR might not be around forever & that would be gutting to loose it all overnight

message 14957: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Too much stuff on that spreadsheet for me. I'm not interested in tracking purchases and my TBR pile is tracked as good as I want on GRs.

I also like to track my challenges on separate word or excel documents.

And it's missing some kind of series tracking, though that would be hard with just an excel spreadsheet.

But I do have most of that other information on mine. Totals, averages, genres, years & format. It's fun to do the year end stats.....

GR has enough stats for me. I need no s/s.

May (mayzie) | 968 comments Dawn, I agree. The S/S effort sounds too much like work !! I love the GR list, mostly so I don't buy the same book again...

....it does? Wow. I didn't know this either. I feel like I was using a Ferrari just to go and buy milk on the corner.

message 14963: by Allison (last edited Jan 04, 2018 11:48AM) (new)

Allison | 1704 comments It would be gutting for GR to go down and not be operating anymore. I used to have a handwritten book listing all the books I wanted to read before discovering GR but there’s way too many now to do that.

I might check YouTube to see if there are any videos with people explaining their spreadsheets. I don’t care about genres, formats or this or that, I would just want to see how they keep track of their books, especially series. Then perhaps when I had time to kill I’d set my own up for “just in” case :)

message 14964: by Andy (last edited Jan 04, 2018 12:19PM) (new)

Andy | 1511 comments Most people start out with a column or two Allie, like Book Title, Author, Series, date read, owned....... jus as a means of recording what you've read or even own (if you have numerous books) & then add as you go along - thats how I started a few years back (before finding GR) & its kinda of grown from there as ive added columns along the way.

Terri | 19576 comments There's ones that catalogue for you, like Book Collector, but of course they cost money. As I hate doing spreadsheets, I'd prefer to use a program like that.
https://www.collectorz.com/book

For now though, happy with just doing GR and knowing I can Export it all if I get scared GR is going down. :-)

message 14968: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments For anybody who doesn't realise yoi can download your GR bookshelves to your computer.

Go to My Books.
On left side, right at the bottom of your bookshelf list you'll find a Tools section. You'll find Import and Export there.
You can choose to Export as a csv file via that channel.

Thank you, Terri. This is very helpful. I had no idea you could do that. I've still got a lot to learn about navigating the site.

Nope, my spreadsheet doesn't but I have another website that I use for that. FictFact: https://www.fictfact.com/getstarted

I should try making something that works for series though. It would have to be quite extensive though as I have 354 series, some finished, some in progress, some abandoned & and the rest not started.

There are a few little bits and bobs on GR that you don't know about usually until someone points them out. :-)

The Victorian Age
You are such a true romantic! It's almost like you were transported from the Victorian Age. Your sensibilities are old-fashioned and modest. When it comes to matters of the heart, you tend to look to the past preferring a gentleman to a scoundrel. Romance and a large family are certain to be the center points of your life!

Kinda had my heart set on Genghis Khan...... or the Romans.... Even the Greeks...... [sigh]

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments What a load of codswallop.

I got Victorian as well. Romance and a large family? I don't bloody think so! :D

message 14993: by May (new)

May (mayzie) | 968 comments Hi, All, I’d like to ask for a general clarification on what the star ratings mean. I use 1 ⭐️ to indicate I couldn’t finish a book, 2 ⭐️ to indicate I didn’t like it, 3 ⭐️ to indicate a Book was ok, 4 that I liked it a lot and 5 as a wow! Several reviews are reading as a 3 ⭐️ rating is a negative / critical response. Am I confused? Clarification would be helpful & much appreciated!!

message 14994: by Ace (new)

Ace (aceonroam) | 19 comments It's so confusing with 3 stars May, some people may only want to give 2.5 stars but then round up, which puts it into the not that great bucket. So in elaborating in their written review it would sound negative?
This is where GR needs half stars, but its not on their plan to change the rating system.

message 14995: by May (new)

May (mayzie) | 968 comments Thank you! That helps explain it. I’ll keep on keep in’ on!!

message 14996: by Alice (new)

Alice Poon (alice_poon) I'm going a little further than half stars - I would indicate 1 to 10 after decimal e.g. 3.7 stars, 4.3 stars, with rounding up or down. For half stars (0.5), it's usually a rounding up.

:D

message 14998: by Allison (last edited Jan 14, 2018 07:20PM) (new)

Allison | 1704 comments I got the Renaissance period. Which is not true because I am not artistic and half the summary was about “leading technology “... uh, definitely not me. But I had a hard time answering half those questions with any of the provided answers.

I’ll trade you, Margaret, for the Victorian age :)

message 14999: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments I don't mind the Victorian age, Allie, if it involves deerstalkers, hansom cabs, and London fog!

But romance and children? Bah!
