Terri | 19576 comments Despite the stressful and sad, gee I'm looking forward to Christmas! We really enjoy Christmas in our family and we sure do need that this year. :-)

What's everybody got planned for Christmas (or whatever your particular festivity is called) and holiday season?

Putting up our tree and decorations this weekend,

message 14864: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments My tree goes up sometime this weekend.

Not sure when. I'm meeting up with Ace for afternoon tea tomorrow. :)

message 14865: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) We got the trees on Monday and put them in the stands but haven't got any decorations on them yet. We decided on two trees for this year. We always go with the real ones, the smell is just so nice.

The outside lights are going up this weekend. We liked last years plan so much that we're doing the same set up. 5 trees in the backyard, each with their own solid colour and then we string up lights between the house and the hedge in the front yard, so it's like a large Christmas patio.

We are lucky enough to have a real masonry fireplace, so all the stockings get hung up there.

I've already started listening to the Christmas music. And I've ordered a few more CDs to add to my collection this year. I do still like to have the actual album in hand.

As to Xmas........Bah Humbug...... fierce supporter of 12 days of Xmas here :D

message 14867: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I love Dawn's love of Christmas! We're into it like that too. Always nice to see someone else getting into it like I do. hehe.

I would have had everything up and decorated earlier, but my husband has a birthday in late November...I have to hold off until after that so he doesn't feel like his birthday blends into Christmas. :)
Before I met him I started decorating mid November, nowadays, it is Dec 1. Which in Australia, is now.

Thanks, Andy. Your well wishes are most welcome. I'll tell Mum when we go visit again tomorrow that my mates on Goodreads are all wishing us well.

Allison | 1704 comments So glad something went right for your family, Terri!! Happy Mum is home safe & sound!!

All our decorations are up. My family are a bunch of Christmas freaks. Since my sister and 5 year nephew live with me, I don’t get out of it but I couldn’t care less about decorations. I just like to open the boxes and see everything from my childhood.

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments Glad to hear things are trending in a positive direction Terri! My SIL has breast cancer and had a double mastectomy, scary stuff. She is doing fine at this point, so there is hope

As for Christmas, I put the lights up on the house proper last Saturday, and I am still sore. Because of the remodel, I could no longer hang off the roof to put them on the front of the house, I had to go up and down a 12 ft step latter about 20 times. I was waiting for the gutter to be installed on the new garage to put them up on there. That happened today - so tomorrow or Saturday, I get to finish the job.

Today we took the Grandkids and daughters to our local "Festival of Trees" It the major fund raiser for the local Children's Hospital and they have over 800 entries this yr - tall trees, short trees, table treatments, door wreaths, quilts, full size play houses and our favorite a gingerbread "house" village. One the gingerbread houses was Millennial Falcon from Star Wars It took about 4 hours to go through them all. We have be going for 30 yrs now and it is the one Christmas tradition I won't skip :)
Besides admissions, they auction off all of the entries. Last yr they raised over $2.6 million. I imagine this yr will be even better. As we walked the exhibition hall I noticed very few entries were still for sale - I take that as a good sign.

here is a couple of links if anyone is interested and is in the SLC area the week after Thanksgiving I highly recommend it and it is for a good cause.

We will get the tree this weekend, we still get a real tree, as Dawn says, you can't beat the smell. Then we will finish decorating the interior of the house during the coming week. Hopefully by next weekend Mrs. Happy and I can sit back and enjoy the rest of the season:)

message 14876: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Terri wrote: "Dawn, what species of pine do you put up?"

We got two different kinds. I'm pretty certain they are a Noble Fir and a Fraser Fir. If they are not exactly that, they do look similar.

One is 7', to put in the front window and the other is 5.5', we managed to fit it in the library/dining room.

So they're about 12 feet from each other, because the house is really small. :)

message 14877: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) The Festival of Trees sounds awesome happy.

The local garden center (where we buy our trees) really decks the place out at Christmas and you can go take a little train ride through all the lights.
We don't do the ride but we can see the lights from our house and it's fantastic.

Dawn (caveatlector) On the subject of Christmas......what is everyone's favourite Christmas album or artist??

I have a lot of great albums but my favourite is still Ella Fitzgerald's "A Swinging Christmas".

message 14879: by happy (new)

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments Instrumental - Mannheim Steamroller

For vocal - Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Burl Ives, Pentonix. It depends on the song.

I really like Bare Naked Ladies version of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen"

message 14880: by Mark (new)

Mark | 1885 comments Bing Crosby is a must, also brass band Xmas music is fantastic, got paid to listen to a local colliery band last Sunday afternoon while manning the skating rink at work.

message 14882: by happy (last edited Dec 01, 2017 04:08PM) (new)

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments I started listening to Chip Davis before there was a Mannheim Steamroller. He led CW McCall's (the guy who did Convoy back in the 70s) backup band. There was a couple of just beautiful tracks on one of his albums (Green River and Aurora Borealis that I found haunting) When I first heard Fresh Aire II I was hooked and have followed them ever since. When they are in town we normally go to their concert.

A couple others for vocals

Mormon Tabernacle Choir
The King's Singers

Terrible idea! GR is part of Amazon and the Big A is already making money hand over fist. They are getting greedier!

I have so much Christmas music, every time I look at a new CD, Mrs Happy gives me THAT look :)

About the only Christmas CD she'll willing let me buy in anything by Mannheim Steamroller (if we don't already have it) :D

Bobby (bobbej) | 1375 comments Hey Terri.... lurking too far away for a while. You’ve had some tough times. My wife was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer in 1996 and she’s been cancer-free for 20 years now and still keeping me in line! And technology has advanced exponentially in that time for not only your mum but for your surgery as well. Hopefully your Granddad had a long and productive life. We do get slammed at times and it often comes in bunches. I guess it’s to keep us humble and remind us of what is truly important. We just lost 2 of our 5 horses this past week....a big Belgian and a mama mini! Had to put the Belgian down right on the ranch....hard. Stay strong and know you have an invisible community standing alongside.

Hey mate. I was actually thinking while I was reading the start of your post that it must nearly be a miracle for your dear wife to have beaten that cancer. They say survival rates were low back then and they are good now with the new technology.
Then you started to mention this technology and mirrored my thoughts. :)

Thanks for your words. Very welcome.

Sorry to hear about your horses!
