Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments What a pun! Where was I? The officials found in the cells pornographic material, weapons, drugs---but no inmates. The officials looked for cell keys, but they were missing. The facility keeper said, We didn't know them keys was gone.' They denied knowing that the prisoners were also gone and had been gone from nine to five every day for who knows how long. An inmate visitor declared she 'come nearly ever day' to see her brother and 'ever time' the cells were empty.

Are you still with me? Here is what happened: the inmates had the keys to the cells and county vehicles which they would use every day to go to their jobs, visit their families, hang-out--use your imaginations as to what else they did from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. The inmates were. removed from their happy cells to other, undisclosed facilities while an investigation is being made. Since they were removed, the county does not make $29.31 every day for the cost of housing prisoners. The county is begging the prisoners to 'come on home.'

This is a true story. My younger son read it to me, and we rolled on the floor laughing. I filled in the parts I could not remember, but the story is true. Tom and I are packing up to find us a jail where we have a bed and two squares a day, clothing, hot water showers, free cars, television, internet, wyfy, and conjugal visits either in the jail or the local Holiday Inn.

Gretchen (eab2012) It's so sad and funny at the same time. I use to work with a man who would purposely not pay his child support so he could get put in jail for a week. It was the only place he got three meals a day and access to video games. There are so many problems with the criminal justice system in this country it's not even funny.

Ace (aceonroam) | 19 comments Have been watching events unfold all day, listening to lots of commentary but it all boils down to hate I think. Sad.

message 13109: by Laureen (new)

Laureen (laureenandersonswfcomau) | 133 comments Maybe hate, but more importantly and sadly, I think, that the perpetrators think they have superior beliefs/understanding of how life should be lived. It has to be bigotry at the highest and most evil level.

Laureen (laureenandersonswfcomau) | 133 comments I would love to have absolutely any one of those libraries in my home. What wonderful pictures. I think my favourite is number 11 with the dog included. A comfy chair, one of the many books to choose from, looking out at a vision of the natural world and a cup of tea on the side table. My idea of heaven.

Gretchen (eab2012) https://www.goodreads.com/blog/show/5...

Just curious to see what other members think about this year's nominations. Much like previous years, I ended up writing in books for the first round and they never made it past that round. I think I voted for one or two categories. The category with the most nominations I've read was the picture book category. Go figure. Aside from that I have only maybe read two or three books from the nominees. Circling the Sun was the only historical fiction book I have read this year and I thought it was an awful book.

message 13114: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments "Let my voice be heard!" Baloney! I think as a whole this year's nominations were pretty bad! Orhan's InheritanceI really liked but it got knocked out of the running; An Ember in the Ashes I thought imitative and disquieting.

I think the whole thing doesn't look for quality but is a ploy for folks to spend money on these books--and a popularity contest which doesn't say much for folks' tastes.

message 13115: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) Is there a way to see the voter breakdown? I am willing to bet there is a lot of sock puppets among the voters for some of those books.

Jane | 3480 comments You could be right--I bet the thing is skewed.

Gretchen (eab2012) These are the kinds of lists that make me hesitant to read best sellers. Does anyone remember my rant about Frog Music? That book leaves a sour taste in my mouth even today. However, I am a sucker for anything and everything by Rick Riordan. He always makes the best seller list.

Mark | 1885 comments None of my books from the first two rounds bar one got through to the final round.

message 13119: by Bobby (new)

Bobby (bobbej) | 1375 comments I actually have 4 in the finals:
My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry by Fredrik Backman
Finders Keepers (Bill Hodges Trilogy, #2) by Stephen King
Seveneves by Neal Stephenson
and
Red Queen (Red Queen, #1) by Victoria Aveyard

That's very cool Kimber!! Similar tastes it seems. I almost voter for Girl On A Train but I'm a big King fan and had the privilege of meeting him many times when I lived in Maine.

May (mayzie) | 968 comments Gretchen, I so truly wished I had seen your rant about FROG MUSIC so I could have agreed with you. A friend had shared it with me... I had to ask her "Why?". What a disappointment!?

I'm torn right now. I want to read Room because I've seen the trailers for the movie and the movie looks good. Then I remember the same author wrote Frog Music and I don't know if I am willing to give her a second chance. This could be one of those rare instances where I see the movie before I read the book.

Gretchen, I took Frog Music off my to read list after that scathing review because I have a very long reading list to get through. I have left Room on my to read list though.

message 13126: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) Glad I can be of service. I will admit that some of my biggest problems with Frog Music came from the protagonist's treatment of her child and as a mom, I just can't abide by that sort of thing. I don't care how historically accurate it may or may not be.

message 13127: by Ioana (new)

Ioana I liked Room, but took Frog Music off my TBR after reading reviews from people whose opinion I value.
I had no idea a Room movie is coming out, I don't think I would be able to watch it...

Happy Thanksgiving to those who are celebrating Thursday!

message 13129: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) I was so excited to get Christmas lights up at the new house only to get outside and discover we don't have any outlets on the outside of our house. Sounds like a summer project for Mr. Gretchen.

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments No Christmas decorating yet...but my cousin's beat me to the punch. They brought the Christmas presents with them when they came yesterday for mum's memorial service.

message 13131: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) My tree has been up for over a week now. I had no desire to put all the ornaments away after we moved only to dig them back out. I always decorate early otherwise I loose any desire to decorate at all.

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments We still get a "real" tree - so it won't go up till next weekend (4/5 Dec).

My pocket change for the year goes into a mason jar and is the Christmas tree fund. One of my Christmas delights is taking the Grand kids out to pick it.

Our goal this year is to have the interior of the house except for the tree done this weekend - we'll see how it goes :)

message 13133: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) I loved going out to pick out our tree when I was little. I've been begging Mr. Gretchen to get a real tree since we got married. Maybe next year when the twins don't think they need to be carried around every time there's a snowflake on the ground.

Lol that was my big dilemma this year...Girl on a Train or Finders Keepers. Had to go with King as I own all of his books and several "master guides" to his works.

Terri | 19576 comments GROUP UPDATE (a nice one)

As many realise, my fellow Mod Dawn, decided not to continue as Mod in A&M. We had a great couple years as the A&M team, but unfortunately it became too much of a burden on Dawn, especially as she was no longer reading historical fiction.

I will miss my sidekick dearly. And I wish her nothing but the best.

Due to 'stuff', I haven't been very active in A&M or Goodreads over the last 6 months. Only coming by once or twice a month. I lost interest in the website and in fact in reading altogether.

I'm over that now. Made myself get my interests back.

I'm not sure what happened to Darcy. I have sent her a couple messages in the three or four months and have heard nothing back yet. Her GR page has seen no activity since August.
I am hoping she is okay. That nothing bad has happened. Maybe she just experienced what I did. A disinterest in Goodreads and reading.
She is always welcome, whether she wants to stay on as Mod or not. :)

I am really chuffed though, to announce that Margaret and Gretchen have come on as Mods to help me out now I'm back in the swing.

Margaret is our Social Media Mod. She has been running our Facebook Page for a few months, but will now also run the A&M Twitter page and do general modding in A&M when she feels like it.

Gretchen is our new Group Read Mod. Gretchen has been an active participant of the Group Read Folder since she first joined A&M and I think it is just fantastic to know she'll be in there answering people's Group Read queries and helping inspire people along on the reads. Gretchen will also help with general modding in the other folders when she feels like it.

So, I guess, thankyou Dawn (although she left A&M with no hard feelings and won't see this message) for the fun times and the modding companionship, thanks Darcy for all the time and effort you put in as a Mod. You are a mate whether you stay as Mod or not, or stay on GR or not.

And a massive thankyou to Margaret and Gretchen!!!! For offering to help me out and coming on board as Mods. Hopefully the three of us can continue to give our fellow readers a friendly and inspiring reading community to join in with.

kind regards,
Terri

You have just put a smile on my tense face. Been a hectic week. I don't live in the US but Donald Trump doesn't inspire me and I would feel exactly the same way. In fact, I do, because his appointment in such an important position sends shivers down my spine. The poor World!
