Jane | 3480 comments I buy mostly online. I HATE shopping in stores at any time of year, near Christmas, the most. Since my husband doesn't believe in it, we don't exchange presents, but I do get presents for children, grandchildren, and friends. My daughter or I used to get my husband peanut brittle but he's watching his weight for the past few years. I do get him a nice calendar though.

I'm with you, Jane... all online shopping, esp for Christmas! Can't bear the crowds.

Gretchen (eab2012) I see Goodreads changed things again. I like the color changes but I'm not loving the font. I'm already blind as a bat and this font makes me feel like I need to update my prescription yet again. It looks blurry. I'm already getting a headache after only a few minutes. What first world problems I have today.

I just fell a little bit in love with your granddad, he sounds so sweet!

I've been collecting Christmas presents for my 3 year old nephew for about 6 months now so I have quite the hoard. Bought for sister (and myself, hee hee) online. What to get my parents.... ugh, I dunno.

I don't have any eye problems, Gretchen and its driving me crazy. It does look blurry and I feel a headache coming on and I just logged onto GR mere minutes ago :/ Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyy do they change things that don't need "fixin"?!

message 13305: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) I did zoom in a little and that seems to help some. However, I already have a 24-inch monitor so zooming in is slightly overpowering on other sites.

Techies! They always have to keep changing things.

message 13309: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) I have zoomed in on the site and that seems to clear up the font a little bit. If you can stand to read the comments on Goodreads' official announcement about the changes, it is made pretty clearly there will be no font changes despite 90% of the complaints being about the font.

message 13310: by Andy (new)

Andy | 1511 comments that normally means they've paid a shedload for it & approved it so there's not turning about now........

I did read them and I changed my font size to 175% ever since I got this compute.r

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments Normally when we get a snow storm it is 3 or 4 inches and it is really no bother. However once every three or four years we get really dumped on -yesterday was one of those storms - I've got 12 to 14 inches on my front lawn and were supposed to get and 5 or 6 inches tomorrow :(

It's almost enough to make me reconsider spending $400 or $500 for a snow blower that I would use said every three or four yrs:D

I think a White Christmas is assured now

message 13315: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) Jealous. I want a White Christmas. I'm sick of all the freezing rain/sleet we keep getting.

A White Xmas, what is that? Lol. Living in Queensland Australia, one just hopes for an overcast day just to have a little comfort in the heat. Xmas Lunch is lots of fresh Salads and cold seafood like prawns and mud crab, cold beer or white wine or lemonade and a dip in the swimming pool. To roast food would be like a slow death from heat exhaustion.

I haven't even had the pleasure of seeing snow. Golf ball size hail is about it.

message 13319: by happy (new)

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments I've also seen hail that size - I'll take the snow!

Most of my grand children are over 10yrs old so I give them money in a card. The kids love it because they save up birthday & Xmas money to buy the sort of things they love, like skate boards or specific video games. Those under 10 get presents. Yes, I hate crowds too and shop on line mostly.

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments I was lucky and didn't lose any trees or branches. Mrs Happy and I went looking at Christmas lights last night and I couldn't believe the number of branches and in some cases whole trees down.

BTW the lights were really something framed by the snow on the roofs and some cases under the snow!

It's snowing now. It looks nice until you actually get outside and realize the snow is covering a solid sheet of ice. I have a feeling we will be staying indoors tomorrow if this keeps up.

message 13331: by happy (new)

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments That's flat out dangerous! Be very careful!

I remember as a kid (1968) when were living in Oklahoma, we had an ice storm that laid down about 2 inches of ice, then the snow storm put a foot of snow on top of that. They actually closed Ft. Sill. It's the only time I ever saw the base closed.

My siblings and I were rough housing inside and my sister broke her hand by jumping up and touching the ceiling where the enterence hall came into the living room. When my parents took her to the hospital the ER staff just assumed she had fallen on the ice. They got a good laugh when she told them no, she had hit the ceiling. Appearently she was the only person in the ER that hadn't fallen on the ice :)

Catherine (catjackson) It's 68 deg F. today and sunny with a light wind. AAARRRRGGGHHH. That's not supposed to be! Usually we're about 30 degrees colder and have already had a light snow. We don't usually get a lot of snow but this warm weather is wreaking havoc on my gardens, my dog, and my psyche. I expect snow and gosh darn there better be snow!! ;)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Meanwhile, in my part of Australia we are having a heatwave. Today and the next 3 days are 35, 36, 39, and 35 degrees celsius respectively.

For the Americans this is temperatures ranging from the high 90s to the low 100s Fahrenheit.

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments I shouldn't complain about the snow either - the snow that falls in the winter is what we drink and water the lawns with in the summer :)

We are having the warmest December I can remember, in my 20 years in this part of France. Still walking in a T-shirt and even had Sunday lunch outside! Crazy really... I think we need a bit of crisp cold actually. It's not normal.

message 13350: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (catjackson) I love cold weather and snow and am really missing it! The weather patterns in the mid-Atlantic part of the US are so strange right now. Everything is just so odd...

I wish i could go see the new Star Wars movie in the theater but i've had to stop going to the movies entirely. The extra loud sound track and bright, flickering lights always trigger a massive migraine. I just wait for a little bit and then watch the movies I want at a friends house. They have a media room with a large screen (super large) adn we can control the volume and set low level lights at floor level. Doing this means i can eventually see the movies adn not get a migraine.
