Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments "The Breath of God" by Guy Adams. It's a Sherlock Holmes pastiche. I was in the mood for some Holmes and Watson, but not really in the mood for Arthur Conan Doyle, if that makes sense.

Kimber (kimberlibri) | 785 comments That Ohio State game was great even though the Hoosiers aren't exactly known for their Football prowess. You should have been in Texas Bobby. It was a helluva weekend for rivals and upsets. I live right down the street from TCU and I'm a UT fan so wasn't a great day for me but the Red Raiders/Baylor and other games were a blast!

Love doing games at TCU....one of my favorite pizzas is the Mellow Mushroom there.

Gretchen (eab2012) I am grateful my children are fully covered in regards to insurance. After an hour and half at the clinic, we were home for five minutes before the little turkey was running around like nothing was wrong. Kids.

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments So no broken leg then? :)

message 13016: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) Nope. Last night the girls had been playing and when Annika got up to go to bed, she fell right back down. She started complaining her leg hurt and she couldn't walk. She couldn't put any weight on her leg. I just figured her leg had fallen asleep so I just carried her up to bed. This morning I had to go get her out of her room because she was complaining her leg hurt again. She still wasn't putting weight on it. Mr. Gretchen came home to take other twin while I went to the doctor. After five minutes in her room to take a nap, Annika was running around like nothing ever happened. I have no idea if anything was ever really wrong. Sometimes it's hard to tell at that age.

Gretchen (eab2012) All of her X-rays came back normal. I'd prefer not to do any more X-rays with any of the girls for a long time.

From my understanding x-raying cats is easier. :p

Gretchen (eab2012) Whenever I am trying to get the twins to move in the same direction I tell them herding cats would be an easier job.

'There were no happy campers in Mississippi this week-end,' said our pastor from the pulpit on Sunday. Mother's pastor was too sick to come to church. I am glad that Bobby can see the end of the season. Finally the Who Dat won a game!

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Am in a state of blissful dreaminess. The BBC has released a trailer for the Sherlock special. So much good stuff. Very gothic, gorgeous cinematography, and the lines so far are quotable.

Is it wrong that I am more looking forward to the Victorian Sherlock special than I am to series 4?

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments happy wrote: "No, as much I like the new version, there is something about the classic setting :)"

This one, judging by the two trailers released so far, is going to be a classic. They're tipping the hat to so much Sherlockiana, including recreating scenes from the Jeremy Brett Holmes.

There is even a stained glass door where the picture is a recreation of the original cover of the Hound of the Baskervilles.

This is what happens when Sherlock Holmes nerds get a chance to cut loose. :D

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Sorry I haven't been round much. Family crisis. My mum was rushed to hospital on Monday. It's end stage Congestive Cardiac Failure. She's returned to her nursing home and palliative care is being set up for her.

message 13026: by Laureen (new)

Laureen (laureenandersonswfcomau) | 133 comments Oh Margaret, so sorry to hear that you are suffering too. My mum was released from hospital yesterday to return to her Nursing Home. She is not in palliative care stage yet. With Alzheimer's, the decline is slow but very hard to watch. Her experiences over the last two months saw her break both her arms then she went into a semi-comatose state where she wouldn't wake up, would not eat or drink.

Her carers knew something was wrong and finally her Doctor said she needed to go to hospital because she was dehydrated. It turned out she had an extremely bad UTI which spread to her kidneys and she also had pneumonia in her right lung.

It is very hard to watch a parent suffer when there appears nothing you can do will help them. My daughter-in-law's mother died from cancer and she has told me of the wonderful palliative care team she had. It lifted a get load from my daughter in law's shoulders to see the kindness and care that the team gave to her mother. They are very special people.

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments Sorry to hear about your mother. When my mom went into her final decline (cancer), the hospice people were absolutely wonderful, not only for mom but for us too. They enabled us to have her pass at home.

Ace (aceonroam) | 19 comments Sorry to hear about your mums Margaret and Laureen, mine too is being cared for in a nursing home, it's very sad and difficult, mostly for my dad I think.
Happy, I'm sorry for your loss, it must have been a difficult time for your family.

Yes it is a a rough ride. Mum, at least, is not in pain physically, but she knows her brain isn't functioning and it causes her much distress. Your mum will be much more comfortable now she has palliative. I wish you all the best.

Do you have other family members to help you? Unfortunately my siblings live in another city, and I miss their direct input very much.

message 13031: by Laureen (new)

Laureen (laureenandersonswfcomau) | 133 comments Happy, that is a lovely story. It must have eased your mind a little to be with your mum in her last days. There is nothing though to take away the pain of such a loss.

message 13032: by Laureen (new)

Laureen (laureenandersonswfcomau) | 133 comments Ace, there seems to be a number of Goodreaders who have aged parents. My dad died 15yrs ago so mum only has me and a few grandchildren who live in Brisbane to look out for her. So sorry that you are going through a tough time too.

message 13033: by happy (new)

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments It was, but at the same time it was a relief - cancer is a nasty way to go. It was 6 months from the time she was diagnosed until she passed, and only 5 weeks from the time she decided to stop fighting. It was 5 yrs ago this past 4th of July.

message 13034: by Laureen (new)

Laureen (laureenandersonswfcomau) | 133 comments Yes, I understand Happy. Mum could be alive for many years yet but not really living at all. That is the horror of Alzheimer's. I do wish our laws could be changed to allow euthanasia in special cases. Like where there is absolutely no cure available or likely to be available in the near future.

message 13035: by Ace (new)

Ace (aceonroam) | 19 comments Oh Happy, what a struggle for your poor mum.

Mum had a stroke just before Christmas in 2012 and she went straight from the hospital to the nursing home (she's in Mildura Laureen). She is completely reliant on the team there and has been peg fed the entire time. Ironically we give her medicine so she won't have another stroke, but personally I doubt whether this is the right thing to do. We do have to face a lot of extremely difficult decisions and I wish you strength and courage Margaret.

message 13036: by Allison (new)

Allison | 1704 comments Man...I'm deeply sorry for all of you with ill family members. Just about the worst thing in the world is watching a loved one suffer. My grandmother passed this summer after suffering full blown dementia for 8 years. The last 3 she had been strapped into a chair or her bed at the nursing home, not knowing us, herself or anything about the world around her. After a week and a half of not eating, she went. It seems terrible to say but it was a happy funeral.

Luckily 5 of my parents 6 children live/d with in 15 miles of my parents, so we were all able to be there.

As for Alzheimers - that was Mom's greatest fear as she got older. Inspite of all that she was going through she said on more than one occasion she was grateful to be going knowing what was going on around her and being able to say good bye to those who came - and there were a lot. My Mom's family had 8 kids and Dad's 9 and most of them are in the local area. A suprising number of the nieces and nephews and their families as well as all the surviving siblings and their spouses visited that last month.

Ace, when mum still had all her marbles, she and I had several long, serious talks about what to do in this situation. She doesn't want to be kept alive with no quality of life, so I am implementing her wishes. The doctors at the hospital congratulated me. Not sure I deserved them. Mum has made her wishes plain and I will do my best to see them carried out.

The home knows as well. She's in a Uniting Aged Care home here in Melbourne. They understand and will care for her. With Congestive Heart Failure we have no idea how long she will last, but the staff will make sure she is kept comfortable.
