message 728: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Poor E.L. James, she tried so hard to bring the dream of those who secretly wanted to beat Bella till she lose her bland look to reality and she's sooooo criticized... True to be told... I read them all... two times each. First time, I liked them, second time I was like "what? How on earth did I like this the first time?" but I endure the task anyway... the books are so bad that I couldn't not reason my likeness in the first place - maybe because they were the books that marked the end of my reading hiatus... but each time I start to analyse them... better not to go that way... I blame this book club and the Q&A sections... usually I read anything that had phrases in...now I'm starting to have *glup* standards :D

I read the first one. I had to force myself and actually stopped and read another book before I went back and finished. I have no interest in the other two. I really couldn't figure out what all the hype was about as I've others that were better.

I have a theory, but is not a nice one, so I usually keep it to myself :o)

But, since I like to talk about any book I get my hands on, I came up with another one, more "politically correct" as we say in Portuguese. Is the twilight phenomena all over again... this time, "more real". A perfect male specimen, filthy rich - now, seriously, a $100.000 per hour income, can that be more realistic? That chooses a simple average librarian type of girl, with low self esteem, and tempt her with a forbidden fruit, a whole new and strange world, that only the brave and naughty enter...
That, I can understand, can't relate, but I get it, is some twisted prince charming adult version.

What I can't conceive is the hidden dark issues that are beneath... and that are so present in most romance books lately, and what is more disturbing, in most YA books I've read lately: The guy is dark, brooding, perfect, prepotent, arrogant and a stalker. Girl is intelligent, beautiful, low self-esteem, great potential, but although she appears to impose herself, their relationship is an abusive one, they promote that being stalked is actually something good, and be told what to do, because females lack self preservation, so they are not capable of taking good decisions, specially the ones related to their own safety.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments I recorded a special of Dr. Oz (Oprah's doctor) show that devoted 1/2 their time to that book. The studio was filled will all ardent lovers of it. Even the panel of experts were all in love with the book. Only one naysayer! (She said pretty much what you said, Sonia.)

I was totally baffled by this one-sidedness.

I can't judge the book, because I haven't read it; however, I trust a lot of my GRs friends. One reviewer said the heroine cried after every encounter with the hero. What????

I also understand that it is not that well written. My GRs friends who are into BDSM books (yes, I've read a few, too) say that there are many more excellent books out there than that one. Why did this one take off like a rocket? Beats me.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments I also really hate that every time I go to Amazon or Audible.com to check out books, and I click on the Romance section, there is nothing but this book. It takes several screens to get to other books. Really, it is almost offensive...

Well, when I was about 27 I think, I went on a excursion-trip to Amsterdam. The girl who shared the room with me tentatively approached the subject of visiting the infamous coffee shops, I kinda shrug it off saying no big-deal, I won't smoke it, but I'll keep you company and have a glass of juice or something - I was with a terrible allergy crisis, so the odds of smelling something were pretty low anyway :o)

Back to Lisbon, I told my parents about it and the next few weeks I remember my mother was all excited and used a conspiratorial tone saying; you know, Sónia went to a... OK, I'm, lost for the word, in Portuguese we call it "casa de chuto", I'd say the connotation we gave is similar to a crack-house... but it was the tone she use, like I was naughty, cause I had the spirit ti go to a usually forbidden place...

And, every time I talk about the book here, I got the same feeling, like all the fans talk like they did read a "dirty" book so they are naughty.... and I'm like O_O really? I read the entire book waiting for the BDSM to happen and waited...and waited... and the only thing that really was BDSM was the contract... the smut scenes were abundant, yes, but I wouldn't call them BDSM, they were just kinky IMO - that, or I have a really open-mind about the subject, which I don't think is the case - but she really cried a lot. Not in physical pain, but she was emotional abused, and I don't care that he said that she had the option to say no, or all the power, or that he won't pressure her into anything she won't want to do every single chapter, he stalked her, he pressured her, he emotionally forced her to stay with him, when I finally put all the smut and funny scenes apart and start to analyse things it was painful to read... that poor girl... and don't give me the crap that I was beaten and abused when I was a child, and I'm a millionaire so I have the right to do whatever I want talk, because I won't buy it...

OK, is sad, no child should be treated that way, it broke my heart reading the facts from his past life... but that doesn't excuse the fact that he's a emotional abusive and sadistic bastard... So he like to bound and gag and beat women, nothing against as long as they agree with it... but the way he treats people... specially her... she had 21 years old... almost a child for God's sake!

[EDIT]: edited to add some break lines, it was a bigger text than planned :o)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments You could be right, Sonia, about the "naughty" stigma.

I'm really not bashing the people who love this book. I've read a few that I was completely caught up in (that I rolled my eyes over months or years later). I have several people I follow who just loved it. But, among my GRs friends it is really more a 50/50 thing, not a total landslide of fans.

Actually, I love Twilight - and read it several times, truth be told. However, I did NOT like the rest of the books in that series. And I agree with Steven King that Twilight is not that well written. But, Stephenie Meyer got something really right with that story. Maybe it was the pacing, or the ability to take me (who is decades older than the target reader) back to high-school and realize it hasn't changed that much.

Yes, I got that she was crying because of emotional abuse - not physical - after every encounter. How can that not stand out to someone? The character? The reader? I don't think his history gives him a free pass on being about to stalk, etc., her. Yes, from what I understand, she was an immature 21, too.

She was an immature 21, even for portuguese standards - we usually go back to parent's house after college, if we leave at all during that stage, yep later bloomers :o)

I liked Twilight too, well Breaking Dawn actually - I didn't analysed it, or it would crash and burn, but I really liked the funny parts, maybe because I spend 3 books waiting for her to become a vampire, and her interaction with Jacob was one of the high points. But, even with all the flaws, it was high-school, and it has vampires, so is not that... aggressive to the senses I'd say.

I'm a big fan of the Dark One's series, and they all are alpha males, brooding and demanding and prepotent, over 200 years all - so all that is understandable, plus, the female characters are all over thirty, and give a lot of a fight :o)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Well, I know this year I'll hit 60 - Five hours left to finish Days of Blood & Starlight (Daughter of Smoke and Bone, #2) by Laini Taylor ...

Maybe today I'll do something crazy and stay up listening to it, I'm kinda tired already, and I know, I just know I'll cry at the end... and then will spend the rest of the night turning in bed and waking every hour because brain is so overwhelmed with the book...

But the past two weeks were so stressful at work that I deserve a brake...and a brain treat... yep... I think so... besides, this one is the peeeeeeeeerfect book to reward the brain's extra effort :o)
