That said, it's a pretty good book on its own merit except for the fact that it's obviously the first in a series that builds on each book with an overarching plot that you only just start to learn about in this book...
Meh, I don't know if that makes sense to you, just giving you a heads up. Not that I don't love prn & uf but I think I'd enjoy them better going in if there was a bit of warning as to whether the book is truly stand-alone in a series, "slight-confusion-if-read-out-of-order-but-can-figure-it-out-okay" in a series, or "one-giant-story-cut-up-for-publishers-happiness" / "if-you-read-book-six-first-you'll-give-yourself-a-migraine" in a series.
Of course, I could just ask my mother to pick out my books for me, she's always had a knack for buying book three or four in the third example.

ok -- so it was good with provisions. Sometimes I don't mind first in series but the writing has to be good so that it doesn't seem choppy. I actually have a couple of the books for that series but have never had the time for it. One of the books I'm reading now actually has a little different take on shifters and those differences speak to your mention of creating your own mythos. (btw the book is
which I'm really enjoying.I'm surprised I've had such a mix with my books this month. I've had some really good ones and some really mediocre ones. Unfortunately I also had my share of insipid female leads
