The Taming of the Wolf

When Dashiel Thorpe, Earl of Brimsworth sees the lovely Caitrin Macleod under a full moon, he can not control himself. Dash ends up biting Caitrin. Though the bite, Dash binds Caitrin to him. Immediately after the incident, Caitrin runs to her room and heads back home to Scotland.

Dash has never met anyone like Caitrin and knows he probably will never meet anyone like her again. Dash follows Caitrin. Can he convince Caitrin that she does belong with him?

The Taming of the Wolf is the latest novel from dynamic duo, Tammy Falkner and Jodie Pearson writing as Lydia Dare. I was first introduced to these authors and what they had to offer when I read the first book, A Certain Wolfish Charm. The passion involving Dash and Caitrin was almost animalistic. They were meant to be together. Dash is the perfect name for Dashiel as he is dashing. Caitrin is feisty and knows how to put Dash in his place. I missed reading the two books after the first one and after finishing this one, I really want to go back and read them now. Not that I was not planning to already but now I have a bigger reason to. Lydia Dare helps show that werewolves are sexy in any time period. The Taming of the Wolf is a howltastic, rip-roaring fun time!

I loved the other book of this series, and I really thought I would love this one. How wrong I was. This one was very boring, over half of the book was the couple traveling and staying at inns. It was something like this: Travel, carriage breaks down, stays at inn, Cait's maid leaves, Cait needs Dash to help her, now repeat that three times, and that was how this book went.

First my usual reassurance. Yes this is actually book 4 but fear not! You can read this as a standalone with any problems, the facts that are important are there, and of course it's a good way to get surprised too. But if the OCD hits you bad, then go and read book 1 and work up to this one. Or just jump in and have fun.

Plot:

Lord Dashiel is staying at the house of the Westfield brothers. He fears himself for what the beast could do and without thinking he bites Caitrin McLeod, a Scottish witch who flees from me. Now he must follow as he has claimed her as his mate, and there can never be anyone else.

My thoughts:

I liked the book from the start, but it took me a while to really enjoy it. Let me explain. Dashiel has claimed her and he knows he will never look at anyone else, but is he in love? That thought bothered me as he chased her and tried to get into her heart and bed. He needed to prove himself a bit more before I started enjoying the book, and then I did not stop reading before I hit the end.

Dashiel is a womanizing rake with a hidden side and he has a sad past. And no one ever taught him what a Lycan really is, so he has got issues and is afraid to harm Caitrin. I was on my guard when it came to him, but I must confess that it was fun to see him try anything to get near her. While Cait is not afraid to tell him what a brute, and hound he is. And that he should just go away, but at the same thing there was something there, building up, and those two needed each other. My fav part of the book were the chasing part, he is not a man to back down. Slowly I did what she did, I started falling for him, and as I did that I saw that he was changing too. Into a real man, and a real Lycan. I liked it. And what he needed was a woman that would speak her mind and not fall all over him.

Something else shows up in this book, I shall not say, but it bodes well for the next series from Lydia Dare. I wonder how that will be handled. I am rather intrigued.

The Lycans are an interesting bunch, and I do love and feel sad over the fact that they only love once. So beautiful and yet so tragic. Then there are the witches, and what is a book without real Scottish witches. They are a fun bunch, and I can't wait to see them fall in love too.

Recommendation and final thoughts:

I still like book 3 the best, the bantering was just so fun there. But this one comes as my second fav from Lydia Dare. It's fun, there is passion, and hearts that can't make up their minds. It will get a 3,5 from me, because I always reach that point where I do not want to put it down anymore. The book also feels very different from usual paranomals. It's lighter some way.

Our Review

Loved this one ! Loving this series.

When Dashiel Thorpe, Earl of Brimsworth sees the lovely Caitrin Macleod under a full moon, he can not control himself. Dash ends up biting Caitrin. Though the bite, Dash binds Caitrin to him.Dash is in quite the bind now new at learning at how to control his own Wolf powers he meets Catie as he calls her and finds himself caught up in an interlude in the library where his Wolf instincts take over and he bites her accidentally and claims her as his mate without even knowing it.

But, Catie flees back to home after this. Her attraction to this man is upsetting and she doesn't even known his name and he even bit her !. She leaves this lord on a merry chase. He now has to find Catie and convince her to be his.

What a pair they will make a witch and a werewolf and this is the only one witch that will be able to tame the beast within. This book was so cute and funny. Caught myself smiling quite a bit throughout this story. It was so fun to see these two fall in love you could not help but love them. The only thing I thought was missing from this story and not taking really effecting the story is In the past books all or some of the witch coven were involved in the story or the romance but , I did not see that in this story only some of them. I like seeing the past characters interact with the new book even if only a little bit making havoc or a little trouble in a good way giving Dash a bit more of a hard time.

Dashiel (Dash) Thorpe has never felt good in his own skin—is wolf skin that is. His mother died at childbirth and his father never accepted him, blaming Dash for his mother death. Though Dash is an Earl, he doesn’t take responsibility seriously and women are no more than a conquest for him to bed.

Catrin (Cait) Macleod is a witch with an amazing ability to read people’s futures. Only the gift can leave her daunted at times. She craves a quiet life, but a chance encounter with Dashiel sets her life on a different course. Arrogant and bossy, she wants nothing to do with Dash Thorpe, or so she claims. In his arms, she finds the peace and quiet, a strange occurrence she’s never experienced with anyone.

Dash is determined to make Cait his wife, but Cait is will not have it. Dash is not used to having his desires denied. Cait has always seen the future, but not with Dash. How can she be with him if she doesn’t know how it will all turn out?

Ms. Dare has written an entertaining light read into the paranormal world of witches and werewolves. I loved the witty banter between Cait and Dash. They were truly meant for each other.

The only thing that rang false with me was the interaction with Dash and his father. For a lifetime of hatred and mistrust, their time together seemed rushed and little unrealistic. (I can’t say more because I don’t want to give anything away.) However, this minor detail in no way overshadows the delightful story. I look forward to reading the other stories in this series.

This is the first book I’ve read by Lydia Dare. She mentions characters from her previous books, but I had no trouble reading this book as a stand alone tale.

The Taming of the Wolf
4 Stars

Synopsis:
Dashiel Thorpe struggles to control the beast inside him, but when the full moon rises he succumbs to his baser nature and inadvertently binds Caitrin Macleod to him forever. Despite her ability to see the future, Cait has never been able to predict her own and has spent her life searching for someone to love and a place to belong. When Dash claims her has his own, she believes that she has finally found what she has always wanted.

Review:

A significant improvement over The Wolf Next Door.

Cait and Dash have a wonderful connection and their chemistry sizzles. I often found myself smiling during their witty banter.

Dash is tortured and sexy, and their are moments in the book were his suffering is quite poignant. He is not nearly as arrogant as Ben Westfield in his acceptance of Cait's abilities and even though he struggles with his true nature, he allows his love for Cait to calm his baser instincts. Caitrin is willful and feisty, and refuses to allow Dash to turn away from what he needs the most - love and acceptance.

Overall, a delightful read with engaging characters and some steamy scenes. There are also numerous hints throughout the book of stories yet to come that involve the remaining members of Caitrin's coven and I look forward to reading them in Dare's Vampyre trilogy.

Caitrin Macleod has visions of the future. When she starts having visions of a gold wolf causing all sorts of trouble, she worries but has no clue it will involve her. Dashiel Thorpe's foolish act on a full moon will not only change his life - but Caitrin's as well.

The Taming of the Wolf is a an absolutely fun read, a stellar addition to the series. Caitrin and Dashiel play a game of flirtatious - push and pull, cat and mouse and it was interesting to see it play out. Caitrin first appeared in Tall, Dark and Wolfish. While she meant well, I found her a bit annoying. Even though she is a stubborn lass through out her story, she definitely grows on me. It is pretty much the same for Dashiel. He appears in the The Wolf Next Door, causing all sorts of trouble. But in the end he becomes quite a lovable character.

Not only do Caitrin and Dashiel find love and passion with each other. But serenity and compassion play a big role. Something both characters need dearly.

I really liked this one. Which is so weird because I disliked Cait and Dash so much in the previous books. But I liked getting to know them on their own. In this book, Dash, the Lycan who fought William for Prisca in the last book, has managed to "accidentally" bite Cait during the full moon, thus marking her as his Lycan mate for life. Their journey to love leads him to his past where he finally finds out who he really is and where he really comes from. The fights and the banter between Cait and Dash were amusing and it was really cute watching them fall for each other. Dash was a lot more noble than he came off in the last book and it was kind of hard to reconcile the two sides of the character. But for the most part, he was very likeable in this book. This one is actually one of my favorites in the entire series.

Ugh this book was extremely long. It had tons of great material but unfortunately the length of the books was very uncomfortable. The heroine in this book is OK you know challenging Scott bold woman. But I found her intended dashall was more interesting. He was in secure but yet still his own person was able to provide an element of lightness in serious situations and yet able to protect his woman and his role in the book was probly the best part. So in this book - old is kind of a rogue and they forgot his role and the other 2 books but I don't think it's really that important you basically don't know that he did wrong but in this book are a means of finding that he has arm he is looking for his family so I have a feeling that that is going to be another part of the series or a spin off will see

This is my favorite of the Lydia Dare's four Regency werewolves romances. Dashiel, who was definitely a bad boy in the last book ending up being a really appealing leading man. The vulnerability of a man whose inner beast has set him apart and who has never been loved along with his enthusiastic pursuit of his reluctant mate - Scottish witch Catrin - keeps his steamroller courtship from seeming stalkerish. I also really liked Catrin, who is used to getting her own way but who ultimately can't resist Dashiel's wolfish devotion.

The hero - Dashiel - was an arrogant ass for most of the book and I just didn't appreciate his attitude. The sex scenes are decent but I couldn't get past his attitude. And much is made of his inability to love and then all of a sudden - he's in love? I did enjoy the witches and I am very curious to see who they are matched up (if Ms. Dare is going to continue with their stories).

I just can't get into heroes who think they have to spare the heroine ... so he's a werewolf. He goes to another werewolf for advice, then refused to accept that advice because the other man "doesn't understand the nature of the beast inside him". The hero needs to get over huimself, already.

Pleasantly surprised by this one. I did not like Cait from the previous book and thought any book with her as the heroine will be really irritating. But the chemistry between her and Dash is so sweet. This book also casts Dash in a new light, away from the mate- obsessed wolf trope.
The first part of push and pull got a bit tedious but the romantic bits in between are really cute.
Also I liked the fact that he could protect her from her visions. It made sense for him to be that way to be with her. Overall a satisfying read.

I loved this book. She is an amazing writer. I was scared at first because this wasn’t the characters I’m use to but she tends to never let me down. The characters have a lot of chemistry and were very humorous!

I enjoyed it, and my husband got a good laugh out of the title. Was it amazing? No. But it was fun enough. Dash's stereotype annoys me (who would think arrogance would be unattractive??) but Cait was fun.

It’s an interesting idea and I liked these characters more than some from earlier books. It wasn’t a story that particularly held my attention though. I would have liked a bit more at the end. It’s a very short epilogue.

My only “but” is how easily some problems are solved and it happened two times: first Cait doesn’t wanna know anything about Dash and suddenly she does / Dash can NEVER lose control, the whole book is about it but it’s solved rather quickly at the very end. Other than that, a very enjoyable book!

Lord Dashiel Thorpe was introduced in Lydia Dare’s third ‘Westfield Brothers’ book, ‘The Wolf Next Door’. In that book, Dashiel ‘Dash’ Thorpe was a rogue Lycan trespassing on William Westfield’s territory by trying to marry his mate, Prisca Hawthorne. In ‘Taming of the Wolf’ Dash has lost the girl but decided to reclaim his life and humanity. He no longer wants to be a wild and dangerous Lycan – he wants to reform and learn how to control his ‘beast’. But on the night of this decision the beautiful and ethereal Caitrin McLeod stumbles into his life, and he can’t help marking her as his mate.
Now Dash and Caitrin are irrecoverably entwined, destined as soul-mates. . . if only Dash can convince her to have him as a husband.

“My mate?” Dash gaped at him. “But I don’t even know the girl. Surely something like this has happened before. There has to be a way to remedy–”
“Aye, Brimsworth. This is not the first time a Lycan, drunk on the spell of the moon, has claimed an unintended mate.” The major shuddered. “I don’t know of one instance where there was a happy ending, however.”

I went into this book a little sceptical. I wasn’t a big fan of Caitrin since her appearance in ‘The Wolf Next Door’ left me irritated. Caitrin is a witch who can see the future – and as such she tends to meddle in other people’s affairs and have a fairly ‘high and mighty’ attitude. I found her annoying and abrasive in ‘The Wolf Next Door’. . . but everything I disliked about Caitrin in that book is what annoys/charms Dash in ‘Taming’, and I found myself reluctantly turned around.

Dash and Caitrin are a great pair – between them they’re bossy, pretentious and mule headed. But they’re also utterly charming and bring out the best in each other. Dash is starved for affection after a disastrous childhood spent knowing he was a cuckolded bastard and ‘beast’. Caitrin’s life is dictated by her foresight, and she is worried when her visions don’t encompass Dashiel. These two had a lot to overcome – but just being together is a soothing balm for both of them.

One small complaint I had about ‘The Wolf Next Door’ was not enough sex. I know, I know – my head is in the gutter. But I was glad to read a noticeable smutting-up in this fourth book. And better yet, the storyline and characters call for it. Dash is a wicked rake when Caitrin meets him – he even has a little black book of conquests which Caitrin stumbles across. Dash is a highly-sexed individual, and in Caitrin he has found a woman who incites endless lust in him.

Lydia Dare has very cleverly introduced a new trajectory for the ‘Westfield Brothers’ series in ‘Taming’. I think the Lycan boys are going to be put aside for the next two books in the series. . . since Caitrin’s foresight has hinted at a Vampire focus. In ‘Taming’ Caitrin has visions of dead men stalking her friends, and she meets a handsome man who conjures images of broadswords and cudgels. I got goosebumps when I read all of Lydia Dare’s dropped-vampire-hints. . . I can’t wait for these new supernaturals to be introduced to the coven witches! Yay!

Lydia Dare is actually two people – writing team Tammy Falkner and Jodie Pearson. I did not know this! And the ‘about the author’ page at the back of ‘Taming’ explains exactly how their process works – with each writing 1500-word instalments and editing the other’s previous work. Writing-team’s have always fascinated me – and Lydia Dare is particularly perplexing because I would have never guessed this was a combined effort! The writing is so seamless. . . and I really appreciated the insight into their duo-style. Incredible!

I really loved ‘Taming of the Wolf’ and look forward to the next two books in Lydia Dare’s list, ‘It Happened one Bite’ (approx: March 1 2011) and ‘In the Heat of the Bite’ (approx: July 1 2011). Bring on the vampires, I say!

Favorite Quote: ”Miss Sinclair, do you often stand naked at the top of Arthur's Seat”

“Only when I’m feeling particularly sad.”

Catilin Macleod has had quite enough of the Westfields and Lycans so when she comes across Dashiel Thrope on a full moon night and he BITES her-well, that’s it. She packs her belongings and steals out in the middle of the night.
Dashiel Thrope, Earl of Brimsworrth didn’t mean to bite Caitlin Macleod but during a full moon he’s helpless to resist the call of nature. But the bite of a Lycan on a full moon is binding so unless Dash can convince Caitlin that they are meant to be together he will be doomed to spend eternity bond to her until one of them dies.

In Lydia Dare’s 4th installment of her Westfield saga, we are given Dashiel (Dash) Thorpe’s story. The bad boy in The Wolf Next Door, Dash meets his match in Scottish witch Caitlin Macleod. After Dash kisses then bites Caitlin in the heat of the full moon, Caitlin is confused and bewildered by her reaction to Dash and decides to go home to Scotland to put distance between them. Dash is informed that biting a female during the full moon is claiming them and now binds him and Caitlin together. He also learns if she refuses his suit, he is destined to remain alone and miserable until one of them dies-breaking the bond. Dash is attracted to Caitlin and follows her to Scotland in hopes of pressing his suit. What follows is a humorous, romantic journey as Caitlin and Dash find their way to trust, love, and family.

This story is well told with a smooth story line filled with romance, laughter, and plenty of smoldering smexy scenes. We see a few old faces but the story is character driven and focuses mainly on Dash and Caitlin. I admit I didn’t like Caitlin or Dashiel in The Wolf Next Door. Their characters were shown only in the present (no background information for either of them) and we were only shown their selfish sides. In this story we are shown different sides of them. We see the incredible pressure that Caitlin’s gift puts on her. I cannot imagine knowing the future and not being able to do anything because you cannot or should not change time. We also see her caring selfless nature towards friends and family.

We also are given a more in depth look into Dash’s circumstances. We see that he is not the selfish man we thought but rather a man who has been treated abominably by his family and is mad at the world. But he tries with Caitlin. He starts out a little autocratic but soon sees that wooing will accomplish more then demanding. I also like how he defends Caitlin to those who have only seen her bossy side. He wants to give her the world and it shows.

The romance of the story is enjoyable and I enjoyed the interactions between Dash and Caitlin. But it differs from the first three. We don’t get quite as much action or paranormal suspense in this one as the others and it seemed to pale in comparison. Angst is present but only in relation to Caitlin being scared of herself, Dash, and falling in love. There are no real conflicts or the tension that pushed this series up a level. You know, or at least I did, what was going to happen from the beginning. Ms. Dare gives us some small clues centering around Caitlin’s coven and Alec MacQuarrie (whom we met in Tall, Dark, and Wolfish) but nothing that develops within the story.

The ending wraps up cleanly and ends their story on a nice note. I have heard the next 3 books, in the series, first due out in 2011, will deal with vampyres. Should prove to be an interesting read.

The Taming of the Wolf by Lydia Dare
Paranormal Romance- Nov 1st, 2010
4 stars

Lydia Dare continues her incredible and involving werewolf series in Taming the Wolf. I found this book lighthearted and quickly immersing. I have been looking forward to this story because it features 2 main characters that have been prominently and tantalizingly mentioned in her prior books. I was happy when my expectations were fulfilled! (While this is part of a series and many character return from her series this book can easily be read by itself.)

Caitrin is a beautiful witch who can see into the future. While staying at the Duke of Blackmoor’s she dreams of a wild, golden wolf that she fears is dangerous. She sneaks down to the library to get a book she unexpectedly meets a handsome man who she is cannot see vision of! He kisses her and Caitrin is stunned to find herself responding to him and shocked when he actually bites her. Startled and irritated she flees but can’t help but be curious about the stranger that blocks her magic.

Lycan, Dashiel Thorpe, The Earl of Brimsworth can’t believe he just bit a total stranger. No matter how beautiful. But something about her attracts him like no other. The next day he is determined to find her but discovers she has left and took his little black book. (It contains all his ‘women’ and his rating of them in bed!) He is mortified. To his further dismay he is informed by his mentor that his bite at the full moon means that he has claimed the young lady as his mate. Which means he is forever bound to her and can have no other woman. But the same is not true for his mate. After finding her identity he quickly pursues her knowing he must try to woo her with all his skill or be left alone forever. But what he doesn’t know it that Caitrin despises lycans and she has another admirer. Can Dash’s charms change Caitrin’s mind or is he destined to live alone?

Caitrin is a spitfire and an admired beauty. I liked her spunky attitude and how she made Dash work for her affections. Her visions of lycans predisposed her to distrust them. When she discovers one is pursuing her no matter how attractive she is wary and wants nothing to do with him. I loved how she constantly kept Dash on his guard and scrambling to keep up with her. Their relationship was entertaining as Dash’s likeable and devious behavior was utterly charming to read. I especially liked how honest he was with her early on. He tells her that she is his mate and he intends to pursue her. This was refreshing since I often get tired of the hero who hides his motives almost the entire book then expects the heroine to forgive him at the end. The scenes between them were real and touching as he blatantly woos her. I also like how protective Dash is of Caitrin since her visions make being around crowded places/people difficult. The story shows from the beginning how much he cares for her even if he doesn’t’ realize it initially.

Filled with high jinxes, laughter, and love. This heartwarming romance will certainly make you happy you bought it!

'Taming The Wolf' is touted as a paranormal , Regency, historical, romance. I might question the historical part, although this book does have a good historical flavor. Generally speak I don't / won't read strictly romance novels - since my long ago years as a bookstore manager left me cold to 'Harlinquin-esqe' bodice ripper sort of books. Of course they did always sell well and we seemed to sell out of Barbara Cartland books very quickly.

Lydia Dare is actually a writing team - and they do a wonderful job I should add. When I saw this book I was really wondering how I was going to be able to read it - the cover screamed bodice ripper and my blood ran cold. I thought that I would let Sourcebooks down and not be able to read the book!

I was really wrong! Once I began reading I had to zip through this fiendishly enticing little tome. What could be more charming than a combination of witches, werewolves and love? The books follows the romance of Caitlin (a witch whose speciality is seeing people's futures) and Lord Brimsworth , a/k/a/ Dashiel or Dash, who, as luck would have it, in a moment of wanton desire during a full moon, marked Caitlin with a playful nip on her neck.- thereby marking her as his mate for life. Alas and alack, Caitlin has no plans to include Lord Brimsworth in any future life of hers ....she cannot see his future at all. in her coven, Caitlin's gift is to see the future lives that people will lead. Another witch, Elspeth has the power to create weather, while another member can heal all sickness' an ills. The intrepid Lord B., knowing that he must romance Caitlin or live a life alone since Caitlin was already marked as his -follows his lady love to Scotland. Along the way he meets - and growls at - a suitor of Caitlin's -gets counseling from an elder fellow Lycan (werewolf) and has a variety of wolfish adventures that one can only imagine!

After their arrival in Scotland Dash asks Caitlin's father for permission to marry his daughter ,and only child. Caitlin's father quickly agrees to Dash's suit and gives his blessing for their union. Thankfully by this time Caitlin has allowed herself to fall for the handsome , fleet footed brute after she discovers that her mother (a witch herself) had also not been able to see her father's future. It's all in the subtle signs I guess!

This book was an unexpected delight. A fluff book that was thoroughly enjoyable - and well written. It was a real head's up for me to not judge a book by it's proverbial, bodice ripper, cover! II simply had to give this book 4 stars for it's originality and fast paced fun! If you want a light read that is filled with imaginative fun that takes place in an unusual world where werewolves are Lords and witches are multi-talented and are generally accepted - get a copy of this quirky little gem!
