Josh (jaygold) | 1 comments Hi everyone,

I'm semi-new to the group. I recently finished Brave New World. I really enjoyed the book. My review of it book can be found here. It had a lot of parallels with Fahrenheit 451, which I read prior.

I just started on The Hobbit and How to Read Literature like a Professor.

message 509: by Nicky (new)

Nicky Kristal | 2 comments Just finished for the second time "On Men, the art of winning over and keeping your beloved" and now I've started reading "The Man who laughs" by Hugo. It is not an easy reading but it's really worth it. :-)

message 510: by Donna (new)

Donna Davis (floridagirl55) | 40 comments I just added The Girls to my current reading. I needed a break from both Crime and Punishment and The Victorian City: Everyday Life in Dickens' London. This one will be a quick read, and I've always had an interest in the Manson Family, so this fictionalized version of their story is familiar, yet lets me see a different side of the story.

I invite you to add your thoughts.

I've been reading Philip. K. Dick's short stories lately. He is really great. I don't know how intoxicated one should be to write stories like he did.

message 517: by Buck (new)

Buck (spectru) Legend has it that Dick was heavily into psychedelics. His A Scanner Darkly supposedly was inspired by his friends in the drug culture having bad outcomes.

message 518: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes!! Also read that he was profoundly affected by the death of his twin sister.

message 519: by Buck (new)

Buck (spectru) I've recently come across the term Dickian, or Phildickian to describe works that are like those of Philip K Dick. His writing certainly is distinctive.

There have been a number of movies made from his stories, not necessarily with the same name: Minority Report; Blade Runner; Total Recall.

ROBERT The Japanese Lover by Isabelle Allende. Very good but not great because I read The Hotel on Bitter and Main by Jamie Ford years ago. Similar plot context. Ford's book came first and was great. I am 3/4ths the way through so I may feel differently when I am done.
