Librarians volunteering language skills: The Volunteer Thread
German-very basicSpanish-very basic
Latin-basic, which isnt even on here and I dont even know if there is anything on here in Latin, but I figured Id mention it.
Oh, and where is Farsi? I dont know any, but it needs to be on the list.
French - basicSpanish - basic
Hebrew - basic
Welsh - I can read it. Translation, maybe titles (only maybe)
Turkish - same as Welsh.
Spanish--I'm basic, but the hubby is fluent.Ubik, are Persian and Farsi the same thing? I somewhere got the impression that they are, but I don't know anything about either to be honest.
I can muddle along in French and German, and I used to know Latin but now it's pretty much leaked out of my head. I'll have a stab at any of the Romance languages if required!
Ubik, are Persian and Farsi the same thing?
Yes. My suggestion would be to just call it Farsi, since every native speaker of the language I know (and I know quite a few) does.

The Indonesia group has 1386 members! There must be some librarians in it. Bahasa Malaysia and bahasa Indonesia are 90% the same. I know a little of the language but only enough to get around the country not enough to even be considered at a basic level.
Other Indonesian librarians and I have been working together on organizing books in Indonesian. We have instructions and consensus posted in our group. If you need anything else, just let me (us) know.
By the way, Rivka, what do you mean with "book records"? I think I've been away from this group for too long!
Petra X, send me to this part. I don't mind helping out with Dutch/Flemish and Italian but don't really understand (yet) in which way I would be helping. Just ebcame a memeber of this group. Can someone explain me in short or tell me where I can find some explanation?
Jeane, librarians fix things in the GoodReads database -- combine different editions of the same book, so they are listed together; delete duplicates (when the same edition of a book is listed twice); correct authors (and titles); etc.
The first thing I would suggest is that you apply to be a librarian. That way, you can help with those books that have titles/descriptions in languages you are familiar with an other librarains may not be.
Novin, I think I have one for you. We're having trouble finding the author for this book. That's either Farsi or Arabic, but I certainly can't tell them apart.
Femmy, a "book record" is just the information GoodReads has for a specific book. Hopefully with a title, author(s), publication year and publisher, and sometimes with a cover or description.

Someone with Farsi and/or Arabic language skills might want to look at Jules Verne as well. There's about a dozen or so that haven't been combined with others. I have been doing what I can on the Spanish and French editions.BTW put me down for basic French and basic Spanish.

Fluent Russian.Basic Latvian, which isn't on the list. I do read books in Latvian, but I'm not working on book records in it.
I am fluent in Danish and basic in German.Since Swedish and Norvegian is rather close to Danish, I'm pretty much fluent in those languages as well.
I also have a small French vocabulary - enough to do some corrections and combinations in that language as well.
Spanish - fluent (native speaker; I've corrected a couple already)Latin - intermediate
French - basic
Italian - basic
German - basic
I´m looking into it and already combined some editions but at the moment I´m at work so it will have to wait till I´m home...

If you are willing to help out, please comment HERE with what languages you read and whether your proficiency is "fluent" or "basic". Bear in mind that this is only useful if your profile is public or you have turned on messaging so that other librarians can contact you with questions!
If you are looking for assistance with a particular language and cannot find anyone on this list to help you, you can always start a new thread in the Language & Translation Issues folder requesting help. Some librarians may not want to be general volunteers but could help out in specific cases.
Initially this thread was being compiled into a list by language of volunteers, but since this wasn't very useful that list is no longer maintained.
