It really is. I like to read a lot of YA and juvenile fiction so I get to read (some) and talk about books (a lot!) It's so much fun to get kids hooked on series (especially the kids that don't want to read!)

I so want your job lol!!! I think I would love working around books. I am slapping myself in the head (like the V-8 commercials). I should have went to school to be a librarian instead of an SLP LOL

I hope you enjoy Crank!!!

message 457: by Robin (Saturndoo) (new)

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) I went to the library yesterday with no intentions of getting books because I still have books checked out from last time. Needless to say I checked out

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4039 comments LOL, Robin. Have heard really good things about The Language of Flowers and The Kitchen House.

I don't why but all your books (this time) give me a cozy, homely feel. :)

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) I am hoping to get some of these other pressing reads DONE so I can get started on this haul LOL

Yes I have heard good things too about The Language of Flowers and The Kitchen House.

I loved The Kitchen House! I led a discussion on it in another group.

I am one of the few people who didn't like The Language of Flowers. I just couldn't stand the main character.

message 471: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Tonight I picked up three holds. One ended up being a book I'd already read. It can be confusing when you see an audiobook published in 2012, but the original book was published over 20 years ago. Oh well, it's not like I don't already have too many books :)

The Zombie Survival Guide Complete Protection from the Living Dead by Max Brooks by Max Brooks, and

The complete first season of "A Game of Thrones". I'm so excited - I loved the book! Good thing I'm off work Monday - it's going to be a busy weekend!

Janice (jamasc) | 59990 comments I brought my first hold home from the library. I ordered The Bounty Trilogy because the third book of the trilogy, Pitcairn's Island is on my Around the World challenge. I may just read that book and not the first two.

message 474: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (sianin) | 453 comments I had no idea what to pick so I grabbed one off of the mystery shelf fairly randomly: Water Touching Stone

message 475: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (sianin) | 453 comments Well, we'll see. I had gone to the library with a list of about 6 books that I was interested in but one was only published a month or two ago and hasn't been processed in any of our libraries and the rest were only available through interlibrary loan. So, I was stuck without anything to read... I will let you know how it worked. Helps (or not) when you have your son saying "Come on, let's go, just grab one..." ;)

Janice (jamasc) | 59990 comments I took The House at Sea's End back to the libray and picked up Ellie Griffith's first two books in the series: The Crossing Places and The Janus Stone.

message 478: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (sianin) | 453 comments Water Touching Stone was interesting and I enjoyed it, then I read a very forgettable mystery (already forgot the title) and am now working on The Bells. It was also a random library pick. So far better than my first two random ones.

message 479: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (sianin) | 453 comments Forgot to add that I also brought home The Western Guide to Feng Shui: Creating Balance, Harmony, and Prosperity in Your Environment and The Essential Book of Feng Shui. Does anyone have a favourite? I used to have one that I loved but lost it to a friend and cannot remember the name or author. I know that Lillian Too is too complicated for me...

Chrissie I just cannot decide whether to read The Bells. Please voice your opinion on it here..... One day I say yes, and the next, no. THINK how wonderful it would be to have a library where I could just try it. Remember you guys how lucky you are to have access to a library. I am jealous.

I really enjoyed this book. I gave it 4 stars, but I see I didn't review it. Of all the books I've read this year, it is one that has stayed in my thoughts the most.

Chrissie: What is it about the book that suggests a "no"? The Bells

message 485: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Shannon, I am worried that this is one of those books that once it is labeled a "masterpiece", few are willing to admit they do not like it. First of all I have read other books on the castrati so the topic is not new. Secondly, I have been told that symbolism is excessive. Thirdly that parts of the plot are implausible, and finally that parts are simply crude. If I had access to a library I would try it, but I have to buy my books so I have to be careful. Maybe another reason is I feel the practice is disgusting. The decadent lifestyle of those times also puts me off.

message 486: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59990 comments It's really hard to determine whether or not a book is going to be one you'll like. Everyone has such different tastes and view points. The only way you'll know if you like the book, is to read it. If you're really on the fence about it, maybe give it a pass.

message 487: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Janice, re The Bells, you are right. The only way I will know is by trying it. Shanon only asked me why I was not sure if I should read the book, so I only mentioned the negative points. I am also intrigued by the book. Some of my friends, like you, DO like it. This is my dilemma. Some people really like this book and others don't!

message 488: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59990 comments I wonder if I can email you the audiobook. It's quite large though, and some email providers don't allow such huge downloads. I wonder if it would be considered copyright violation. Nobody ever gave people a hard time about passing along DTB's, but digital formats are much more stricter.

message 489: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Janice, you are very kind to offer me this but I don't think it is legal. Isn't it crazy how digital books cannot be lent! I should just go ahead and buy it. It is me that is crazy. I spend so much time deciding if I should read a book or not..... Thanks anyhow.

message 490: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (sianin) | 453 comments Well, I have finished The Bells. I thought it was pretty good. Surprised to hear anyone might think it is a masterpiece though. My impression is that the author and certainly the characters also feel that the practice of castrati is a violation and horrific and does not glorify it if that helps you Chrissie. I found parts of the plot very predictable and other parts (As you mention) implausible but regardless an interesting read that kept me with the story throughout.

I download the files to my computer using the audible manager. I'm not sure what the legalities are. I'll look into it. There must be something posted on audible.

message 492: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Shannon, interesting, your view is not exuberant. So how many stars did you give it?

Janice, if it is possible to pass on downloads this must be interesting to many. Nobody has spoken of the possibility of lending audiobooks!

message 493: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59990 comments I couldn't find anything definitive on Audible. They did say that you could have 4 computers and 3 devices authorized to your account. That was to protect the "intellectual integrity" of the authors and publishers.

I presume that because of the ease of making multiple copies of digital media, abuse could be rampant.

I agree that lending audiobooks (in the MP3 format) would be great. I have a friend who buys audiobooks on CD and she lends those out. But then, she doesn't rip a copy onto her harddrive either.

message 494: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Janice, that you can have four computer and three devices pretty much says that lending isn't possible. Here comes a dumb question...... You say, "But then, she doesn't rip a copy onto her harddrive either." By that do you mean that one is not suppose to rip a CD onto your computer? I am so stupid on this stuff. I thought that was OK......even if I don't know how to do it. I mean you bought the CD; what is so terrible about just moving it to your computer. I think you can see why I like Audible. You don't have to know how to do anything if you buy from them. It all comes fixed in the right form. Good for nincompoops like me.

I would give it 3.5 to 4 stars (I haven't posted my review yet as I need to reflect). Also, I am a hard marker.Out of 200+ books I probably only have a dozen 5 stars. (Really would give it 3.5 but on GR will probably bump it up to 4). Maybe I should read some reviews and see what I missed and why people think it is so great! I did like it but masterpiece?...

In reference to The Bells

message 496: by Kat (new)

Kat (katzombie) | 2478 comments You could look into Overdrive Chrissie - it's an online library for ebooks and audiobooks, connected to a local library branch. I know you don't have access to a local library, but it might be possible to find one that you can join online?

I'm almost certain that sharing audiobooks via email is, if not illegal, is a copyright infringement - which is a shame, because you can lend CDs to anyone! Unfortunately because Audible is a different beast from Amazon, they don't have a lending from friends program that I could find.

message 497: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Kat, I have been told that Overdrive is only for American. I have looked at audible too.

Shanon, I will keep your rating in mind. I am not so sure I will read it. there are so m=any books I feel I really must read.

I thought so too, but I did a little poking about, and there are international libraries listed too - I found one in NL. You can search by country so it's easy to see which libraries are members in which countries.

message 499: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Thanks Kat, I will check it out and see what is available.

message 500: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (sianin) | 453 comments I am not sure where you live Chrissie however, even if you do not have a local library but you do have internet you may be able join a library and get access to audiobooks and ebooks.

I cut this out of a different group but see if this works for you:
You can join the Philly Free Library for $35 per year even if you aren't a resident and use their Overdrive. I did that last year and used it all the time -- you can go to their website and search their catalog if you want to see if they have anything you want first. http://freelibrary.lib.overdrive.com/...

I am assuming that the person who suggested this meant not a resident of the US but may also mean a resident of Philadelphia. Worth a check anyway.
