Why do you think people hate twilight so much?

Edward is 100 years old. Yet, he spends his days hanging around a high school. If he didn't look like Edward, he would look like this:
http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?um=1&a...
Edward, who at this point barley knows Bella, sneaks into her room and watches her sleep. I don't care how "romantic" this is supposed to be, if I liked a girl and was standing in her bedroom at 1 o'clock in the morning, she'd be freaked. Even if she had a crush back. An evil thing, watching you sleep. If Edward wasn't Edward, he'd look like this:

You see where I'm going with this?
The author paints the picture that because Edward happens to look like Robert Patterson ie is a goodlooking guy, nothing else matters. The books are based on a shallow fantasy of a 30 odd year old woman pretending, Carley Rae style, to be a 12 year old girl.
And 12 year old girls are reading this, and lapping it up. Meanwhile, frustrated internet addicts are reading it, seeing just how messed up Edward actually is, and wondering why the Forever Alone meme represents their life still when they don't do that.
Personally, not all of Twilight is bad. Sparkle sparkle aside, I like the Vampires, and the Volturi are a pretty impressive creation. This could have been a magical world that Meyer created, but instead it reads as a cliched, shallow, unrealistic, infuriating love story (later triangle) between uber creep Eddy and uber annoying Bella.
But what's worse are the films. Breaking Dawn should be shown to prisoners as a form of torture. It was that bad. Like proper bad. Not even, Tommy Wisseau so shockingly bad it's funny bad. Just bad.

I like the idea of the book but it is so poorly written. I kept on reading hoping it'll get better but it didn't. With this book you're better off watching the movie and fanfictions.
The main reason that people hate the book is because
1.) The relationship between Edward/Bella has all the signs of domestic violence and it being rated YA upsets many people.
2.) Bella is a mary-sue. She has no personality, is plain, no major flaws, and a general sour puss yet every guy wants her.
3.) Love is represented as physical attraction with out no real personal growth to likeing a person for who they are.
4.) Since the book is in 1st pov there is a lot of depressing self hating that can annoy a lot of readers.
5.) The book touches on pediophilia. I know a lot of fans may disagree. But in the two book Jacob admits that while there is nothing sexual in Quil/Clair or Jacob/Rennesme now he DOES say that eventually they're relationship with 'grow.' By them admiting that their relation will grow into being 'lovers' when she is ready IS a form of pediophilia by definition since that is what they expect. Also since the wolf will go crazy by not being with the imprint would casuse a guilt complex with the girls. This type of 'love' is extremely disfunctional even though the author trys to romacitize it. The girls are given no real choice.
In general, the reason that there are so many haters is that the books should NOT be rated YA for all the above reasons. I read the book, loved the plot and the idea, not to mention it is wonderful eye candy at some parts, but I hated the writing. Another author such as Anne Rice, Karen Essex, Suzanne Collin, ect would have made the book much more involved and full of depth that the books lack.

I ment it for all the ppl who previously said thier main problem is that the vampires are not the undead (villians) who are destroyed by sun, your comment was just the last one where I've seen it mentioned :)

Actually -By definition:

sexual desire in an adult for a child.
With your broad definition, that would mean anyone who had a crush on someone and expected it to go further then the crush is a pedophile (so a 18 year old liking a 16 year old is a pedophile). If she is ready when shes 13 then yes, you are correct. If she is ready when shes 18 or older then no. Not to mention pedophiles like CHILDREN. If they desire them as sexual objects as a childen, then I would be inclined to agree with you. Just because they expect something to happen down the road doesn't make them pedophiles. Now that doesn't mean that a 18 year old can't be a pedophile. Just not in this instance of a hypothetical.

Morgana_lefay wrote:"actually lots of authors changed vampires from the undead who are destroyed by sun (and they are still poular)"
Wow, you know thanks for bringing that up Morgan. Jim Butcher wrote three (4) different types of vampire courts. Red, Black and White vampires (and Jade but he hasnt gone into that yet). Red are suppose to be bat like vampires who have a flesh mask to make themsleves look like sexy humans. They also have saliva that is like a drug that paralizes the victim and the person enters into a state of euphoria. They are strong, fast and hard to hurt in a fight unless you cut open thier bellys. And they turn into a bat once they kill thier first person. There is also a resitance of Red vampires who havent fully changed who try to kill them all. Black vampires are zombie like vampires. They smell like rotting flesh. And are the stereo typical Bram Stoker vampire. They are also the strongest out of all of them. White court vampires are pretty much succubi. They are the most human, can walk in day light. Can eat regular food. They feed off of the life force of others in high levels of emotional activity. So they either like to inflict pain on thier victim or pleasure. They can heal and are strong when they use thier powers, they even glow and radiate cold and thier blood is pink. They are the only vampires who are born, not created or turned. And thier kryptonite is someone who is in love they can not touch or they burn and they are the only vampires that can turn fully human.

And paedophilia is the condition of being sexually attracted to children. It doesnt say they are attracted to the children in a sexual way in the books.

It may not say so, but seriously, if we take Jacob who had no problem with trying to force Bella because he thought he imprinted on her - do you really think he doesn't want sex from Renesmee, who he apparently really imprinted on? ;)
The whole point of the imprinting business is that she's "destined" to be his bride - it doesn't sound to me as if they would care much if their chosen sees it the same way.

You have a father who can read your mind and beat the snot out of you. When you want to get married to someone, is the only thought that you have is having sex with them? Or is it, this person is amazing and I want to spend the rest of my life with this person?

Well you could ask Woody Allens daughter. I mean wife. I mean daughter. Cough cough. Such things have happened before.

ha ha! good one! :D

Haha nice Heidi!

1.Bella got on my nerves, she is so ungrateful and whiny, basically she is everything i hate in a heroine.
2.Edward had no real personality, plus whoever told Meyer that NOT wanting to have sex is an attractive trait in a boyfriend obviously was either 12 or doesn't know anything about relationships. I have never met a person who would say that they wish there boyfriend didn't want to have sex with them, i mean they dont want their boyfriends to force it on them that is unattractive but i know i definately would not find it attractive if i was with someone who said they didnt want to have sex with me, if anything it would make me feel a little insecure, but thats just my opinion.
3.The last book, i dont care what anybody says, it was total fan fiction crap, loads of stuff happened that didnt really NEED to happen. In fact if this book were a person id say they needed to be in some kind of psyche ward.
4.Dont even get me started on the Jacob thing, it's not that it creeped me out THAT much, it's just that it was so... conveniant, radiculously so, and it just annoyed me.
5.As a whole the series just disapointed me, i was told by many of my friends that it was a brilliant series, so i suppose i built it up too much, the films did NOT help, if anything they just made me dislike the story even more.
6.One last thing was them having a baby, i mean i knew they were going to do it but come ON it was just so..so... i dont even know how to describe how obvious and annoying THAT plot device was.
So all in all i just didnt like the books, they arent as terrible as some make them out to be, they just weren't as good as i had hoped, and i think there are a lot of books that deserve to be recognised as brilliant more than this series does.
Also to the person who said haters are jelous of what Bella and Edward 'have', um may i say...no...just, NO! The only thing they 'have' is a joint lack of personality and emo-nous (not a word but im using it anyway;) Anybody who has bee in a real relationship knows what a load of bull that is, love is about caring for another peron more than you care about yourself, not running around like pale faced twits xxx

Have you turned on your TV lately? Theres a show called Jerry Springer or Cheaters or Maurey; There are people running around like pale faced twits all the time.

It may not say so, but serio..."
Heidi wrote: "Vanessa wrote: "By them admiting that their relation will grow into being 'lovers' when she is ready IS a form of pediophilia by definition since that is what they expect. "
Actually -By definitio..."
So true because in Breaking Dawn he does say that when Nessie is 'ready' he will take on the part as a LOVER. In both times that Jacob exaplains imprinting he doesn't say wife or partner. It's always lover or soul mate when he explains the eventual ending path of the imprint. PLUS Jacob actually gives her a tribal braclet that has the same meaning as a promise ring. And this was when she only looked about 7 years old. (This was during christmas) And to make it look worse she will look about 18 when she is only 7 years old (it might be 8, I can't remember exactly).
You were also right in in another post. 'Child grooming' would is a better term than I used to describe what was happening. I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees that.
I really hope her publisher will either not encourage Meyer to publish a continuation or at least not label it as a YA.

That's exactly how I felt. The first one got me hooked so I continued to read the series with some annoyance but not too much until the ending, which turned me off to the whole series completely. Then I saw the movie and everything about that book was exposed in a different light, Bella became too needy, everything I hate in a heroine, and the vampires glittered, and the chemistry between the two MAIN characters was atrocious.
Also the fact that the premier of twilight was the reason that one of the Harry Potter movie premiers got pushed back just made me feel like I had to choose sides. Magic trumps vampire bullshit 100% of the time.

Yeah, but most of them arent claiming to be the best love story of all time....bleegh, that is all ;) xxx

The whole idea of a vampire not drinking human blood, walking in the daylight, going to school etc. seems stupid (to me). It lacks this solemn and gloomy atmosphere of novels like Dracula and Carmilla where vampires are in my opinion rather charismatic, mysterious and of course dangerous.
I also hated Bella for being so dull, ordinary, insecure.
Conversations were also too dramatic.

Arranged Marriage or marriage to underaged girls = Power, wealth, prestige, and in the last case most of all sex & control - history tells us that.
Heidi wrote: "Well you could ask Woody Allens daughter. I mean wife. I mean daughter. Cough cough. Such things have happened before...."
Exactly, these things happen, and I sure don't believe out of love. :/
Vanessa wrote: "I really hope her publisher will either not encourage Meyer to publish a continuation or at least not label it as a YA."
That's my main gripe with it, it's too closely fashioned after adult (paranormal) romance novels - I always wondered a bit how this managed to get picked up by a YA publisher without a few alterations.

I actually think that Austen is routinely discounted because of her focus on romance and Shakespeare's romances (particularly Romeo and Juliet) are now thought to be not romances at all.
It's just a sign of 'the spirit of the times'. Each age champions a point on the line between being a part of a larger unit (like a couple) and being an individual. At the moment, romance is thought of as being restricting and detrimental to the individual. (I can't think of one intense, beautiful modern romance. Can you?)
Perhaps the pendulum will soon swing the other way and romance will make a comeback, but I think the discounting of Twilight is part of a much larger trend in our culture.

that's just it! not everyone likes it cuz they think it's ruining the vampire genre. i don't believe so i love this series!
I'm glad someone does in the midst of all this hate.

I being a fan of the book, however, did NOT like the movie Twilight at all. Awful, awful. I recently watched some scenes of New Moon, and I had watched some scenes of Eclipse...and they were okay. Way better than Twilight, that's for sure. That movie was a mess IMO. I couldn't get through Breaking Dawn cause it was kind of stupid to me at the time, and while I still do kind of find it stupid, it's not as stupid to me as it was before. Maybe it's the way I saw it come alive in some scenes I watched, I don't know. All in all, it's a fun read and that's all it should be. No one should actually take it seriously, it's fiction after all!

because people dont like the whole sparkling vampire thing i love the book but i get where they're coming from

I for one fully support getting young people to read more often, but not at the expense of quality values and life lessons. I don't want young women reading this series and getting the impression that the only way to live your life is to find a man to tend to their every need and pump out a child as soon as possible.
Other young adult series (Narnia, Harry Potter, Hunger Games) leave the reader with a positive sense of self; of empowerment and individuality. These are the books young people should be reading. Edward and Bella are not a text-book example of romance, it is an emotionally abusive relationship between an older, possessive, borderline stalker and a vapid, insecure, and empty husk of an individual. Young girls should not want to grow up to be Bella Swan; instead, be Hermione, be Katniss, be Kira, be Susan, be more than just an object for a man to control.
As an adult male with a younger female sibling I see little but social and cultural damage stemming from Meyer's work and wonder how a woman could possibly write the most gender demeaning literary work of last decade.

However, I do have to say that I strongly disagree with the people that say it's the best book in the world. I know that not all fans say that, but the occasional fan that I am talking to will say that it's the best book ever, and that does bother me. I find that the plot line lacks a important theme overall, and that things happen a bit too quickly to create a realistic love story. Bella meets Edward for the first time, and almost instantly becomes infatuated with him. And within the 1 or two years that the series spans over, Bella decides to forsake all of her friens and family to live with Edward. Though the idea of love above all else is very romantic, and I do get the appeal of it, I find that this story wouldn't be as special if Edward was a vampire. I mean, Bella's 18, marries straight out of high school, and gets pregent within the first couple weeks of her marriage. If Edward wasn't a vampire, then this would just seem like a typical small town type love story. I just think that Bella should be thinking of her family. Her father and mother clearly care about her, but she decides to stop seeing them for a family she's known for 2 years, tops. Maybe it's my inner Daddy's girl talking, but I think she should have put a little more consideration into how her family is going to cope. From the parent's point of view, this decision is devastating. They will be able to see her for a few years, then she will have to disappear from their life forever. She may be able to get away with looking 18 for awhile, but eventually she'll have to step away. No Christmas vists, no dinners at Dad's house or anything. To have your child just disappear without a trace is probably a horrible feeling.
Another thing that bothers me about the Twilight books is the main character. She is supposed to be mature for her age, however, she seems to make very adolescent choices. For example, when Edward leaves, she tries to kill herself several times. She has known this man for barely a year, and even though they are "in love", this is a highly irrational choice to make. I feel if she was really mature, she would have moped for a long time then try to get over him, not attempt to kill herself and say that there is no one else for her. Bella is also needed to be constantly coddled and taken care of by Edward. She says that she can do things on her own, but then ends up hurting herself or making things worse. I feel that she is more of a child.

I want to see it!!!

HOWEVER, I do want to point out that several people have mentioned Bella attempting suicide. The book makes it clear that she never once intended to end her life when she was behaving recklessly, only trying to get the adrenaline rush that brought on her hallucinations of Edward's voice. That's pretty pathetic in & of itself, but NOT a suicide attempt. I just wanted to make that point in fairness to the author.

Wow, you are a truly empowering gentleman. To add to that, you seem to have an amazing taste in literature (I saw some of your list).

Some people choose to see things in worse case scenarios. You can have many people read a sentence and come up with different things. Personally I thought she became an adrenaline junkie - others would say she was trying to kill herself.
Samething with imprinting. I see it as an imaginary mystical creature finding their soul mate - regaurdless of age. People want to humanize it (because we ARE human) and make them to be child pedophiles or child groomers. Or assume that if a mystical creature aka werewolf fell in love with them and imprinted on them, they would have the choice and be impervious to it.
My favorite gripe I see a lot that Bella is a weak winey character. When in fact, she never wines and she's weak when compared to not being able to fend off supernatural creatures. Some how she should be Buffy.
