Twilight
discussion
Why do you think people hate twilight so much?

Hopefully there are some teenage girls out there who are smart enough to realize it's escapist fantasy. Not a blueprint for how to live your life.

You missed on WHY they turned her into a vampire? To save her life and because she continually wanted to torn into one.

I had a hard time deciphering that.

Incredibly immature. This site is all about giving constructive feedback on books and literature. People have very well thought out opinions ..."
*applause*

I mean seriously? Bella is the most dependent, clingy and desperate person I have ever read about. I didn't mind the books ..."
There have been tons of stories and even pieces of classical literature where young lovers commit suicide because of each other. It's something that happens. Women falling in love with abusive men - it happens. And for heaven's sake the glittering vampire...get over it everyone. If you want to read about traditional vampires, go out and read about them, she hardly eliminated it from everyone's memories. She was simply being imaginative and creative. One more thing, stop with the 'malleable young girl' nonsense. The young girls I know all have minds of their own and have read several books that could've been dangerous. But talking about young girls like their mindless zombies is insulting, they are capable of reading things and then knowing what's realistic, what's dangerous, etc.

Its poorly written, poorly plotted and teaches wrong, weird morals.
Thats why."
Who said it was supposed to 'teach' anything?

Who's damon?"
I think it was supposed to be damn or damned, then the sentence would make sense. :D

I totally forgot about vampire diaries, never really registered the series, I read the firt book but thats as far as i got
but i must admit the teams are really annoying

Vampire Diaries also has a popular TV show (loosely based on the books, just like Secret Circle). On TV, the "bad boy" vampire Damon is hot and snarky, and his brother Stephan was traditionally clean cut and a "good" vampire (last season not withstanding). Both love a beautiful high school student named Elana. It's the classic love triangle teen drama, but I have read the books and I watch the TV show. Teams are annoying, but I do think the actor who plays Damon is attractive.
Sorry for the thread jack. I think the similarities may make it sort of tangential to the discussion. FWIW, I find VD to be fun escapist fantasy. It doesn't teach anything, but it doesn't have anything in it that really bothers me either. I understand it may be a subjective value judgement, but there you go.

I know there is a TV series but I havent seen even one episode, I think its because of the love triangle - I'm not really fond of them

I can understand that. Sometimes I get sick of them too. In general, I like romance to remain a subplot and lots of action related to a monster of the week or whatever drives the main plot or story arc. If they have to have a love triangle, though, it helps if I think the actors are hot. YMMV.

Well I like romance books but I dont really like love triangles (I especially hate it if there is more than 2 ppl interested especially when there is no reason so many of them wants the girl/boy ) and I hate if one of the MC's is cheating and is forgiven in like 5 minutes because the other MC just love him/her so much or its explained that he/she just couldnt help themselves and such (thats why I didnt try to continue with house of night especially after I read a blurb that the MC doesnt understand why her friends dont talk to her anymore because she is with multiple guys)

At a young age, I just... ate everything the book threw at me.
But now after having gone through relationships and having more of life's experiences, I find the love plot to be really unrealistic and ridiculous. I also dislike Bella as a character. She has really selfish personality attributes, and doesn't have any... strength to her. I feel that she's not exactly the greatest role model to teenage girls. Especially after Edward left, and she went all suicidal and pretty much curled up into a fetal position going through hallucinations. All because her pretty boyfriend broke up with her.
And then there's Edward. Oh Edward. Someone who on the surface is incredibly good looking and makes girls go goo-goo-ga-ga from the undivided attention and obsession he provides Bella. Cause honestly, which young girl doesn't want that? A "complete hottie who could practically impregnate you with one glance. He's just THAT hot." But if you look beyond that... I mean, he's a virgin pedophile, who breaks into her house at night and watches her. Realistically, regardless of someone's allure and smashing good looks, I'd say "Get the fuck out" and then board up my windows with... steel.
I find it funny, because if it had been anyone else and he hadn't been as "attractive" to Bella, she would've thrown a shit storm and instead of thinking him romantic, she would automatically think "what a psycho creeper."

Hahaha! I totally agree with you and all of that was pretty much true...

Just wanted to chime in. You've both got legitimate points. I don't care if someone has a negative opinion about the books. I think the term 'haters' refer to the people who put an obsessive amount of time/energy into letting everyone know that not only do they hate twilight, but that anyone who enjoyed it is stupid...worthless...etc etc. That's who I think the haters are.

The imprinting thing was different. But it's not like any inappropriate sexual behaviors happened. Jacob took care of and protected the baby, and it solved the issue of him being in love with Bella.

Are people psychic? I didn't know she was going to end up with Edward. People can suspect what they want, but books always have twists and turns and surprises. Fantasy characters can do anything they want in fantasy stories. Including dangerous creatures sparkling in the sun.

So all books have to have an amazing heroine? Young girls can't tell the difference? I was able to.

They are all books, so therefore they can all be discussed. I never got that message from a book. I never got the message from Flowers in the Attic that I should punish my children. I never used Stephen King's novels as any blueprint for my life either. Why are people so down on the intellect of young girls who may read this book? I mean, is there a pack of them running around searching for vampires and werewolves? And if so, I'm just going to suggest that those girls might have had a low set point to start.

Newsflash: Men like that exist.

I mean seriously? Bella is the most dependent, clingy and desperate person I have ever read about. I didn't mind the books ..."
Someone please explain this to me. I did miss the whole Twilight boat in the beginning. Was Bella Swan marketed as the next amazing role models for young girls? People have all different types of personalities, but books are only supposed to have one type?

What does it have to do with the movie? People think the movie was bad sure. But I think some may have other reasons for not liking the book that have NOTHING to do with the movie. They may not like vampires, the woods, fog, fantasy, romance, etc. I love Twilight but I think it's conceited of some of the fans to think that EVERYONE must like their book. Or...they must have some shady reason for pretending not to like it. People like different books, bottom line.

I'm sorry - did she take all of the copies of Dracula and burn them or something?

The teams were something I heard nothing about - I didn't care it wasn't part of my experience reading the book. I mean were people being taken into hostage and made to choose teams? I never heard any of it.

No one said this book was supposed to be viewed as a model romance either.

well to its defense there are stories where the vampires are even older but its usually not in YA books so maybe the characters being adult makes it seem a little different

I think I agree with you for the stalker part and she always ends up getting hurt from something that she can't have...... Him!!! Take a hint bells!

huh? is there another lea? I didn't write that.

>.> Since it's pages ago, I have no idea which comment you responded to. If you read some of my other comments you'd know that I've said I have personally known/know people that have viewed it as a model romance and that's what I base my own personal concern and irritation.
I am not talking about supposed to be; I couldn't care less.

Maybe add a profile pic, it'll help with the confusion.

and in my opinion bella is a horrible character who strings people along and plays mind games with everyone and makes it out to her being a damsal in destress but in reality she starts everything

I prefer not to - it's fine to have an opinion. I just haven't met someone that thinks they should use it as a blueprint for a relationship. I would probably think they weren't the brightest bulb to begin with. Not that YOU are, seem to know it's not a good idea to base real life off of it.

I prefer the movies over the books any day. At least in the movies, Bella's character isn't as pathetic.

I'm not jealous.
Eward and Bella are just an awkward couple.

i only read it cause my friends said they really liked it, and they kept making references to it that i didn't understand. i finally got fed up with not knowing and read the books. i was obsessed with them for a while but i grew out of it after a while

no, that's because the movies destroyed the books... :/"
Watching a movie should never affect your opinion of books.
