I just learned that one of my law school professors published a book..... but it isn't showing up on GoodReads even though I just purchased it free from Amazon: see-https://www.amazon.com/Neon-Surf-Othe...
The book has a publication date of 2/7/20. Is there a way for a GR librarian to have it added to GR?

This isn’t a request to update a specific book, but I wondered if a librarian could help with this question. There are several books on my TBR which show “unknown” for publication date when I look at them on my Goodreads shelves. However, when I click through to the book (the same edition as the one I have shelved) the publication date is shown there.
An example to show what I mean: The Age of Football: The Global Game in the Twenty-first Century has the publication date recorded as 5 September 2019 but the same edition appears as publication date unknown on my shelves. I have several other examples.
I just wondered if anyone knows whether this is something I should flag in the librarians group to request the record is updated, or if it’s a GR glitch that’s nothing to do with librarians. Thank you.
Bryony wrote: "There are several books on my TBR which show “unknown” for publication date when I look at them on my Goodreads shelves. "There are two dates. Publication date will be original publication date, and is probably the one you are displaying on your shelves. There is also Edition date, which is likely the one you see when you click through to the book page. For more recently published books, these are often the same date.
Goodreads used to auto populate the original publication date field with the date of the earliest edition on the site. This was egregiously wrong for really old books (think Austen, Dickens, Eliot, Conan Doyle, etc.), so that when it displayed 1970 for Pride and Prejudice any of us would have laughed. But for books published only 50 or so years ago, it wasn't obvious - if we weren't familiar with the book, or looking at the copyright page, how would we know that 1980 should really be 1953? So we convinced them to stop auto populating that field so we librarians would know to get the correct date rather than assuming what was in that field was correct.
This is the long answer to your "unknown" date. The much shorter answer (ha! you were waiting for this) is that yes, please start a thread in the librarian group to get this information added to the book record. Not having it display is one of my pet peeves.
Thank you for the explanation Elizabeth, that’s so helpful. I’m quite amused to think of a bunch of nineteenth century classics having been mistakenly recorded as published in the 1970s! I will definitely ask in the librarians group for the missing information to be added when I notice this happening. Thanks again!

Another request for a date correction — I enjoy old travel writing and this works for 30.1 Macao! My Mother's Journal: A Young Lady's Diary of Five Years Spent in Manila, Macao, and the Cape of Good Hope from 1829-1834 by Harriet Low Hillard
(2008)
And
My Mother's Journal; A Young Lady's Diary of Five Years Spent in Manila, Macao, and the Cape of Good Hope from 1829-1834 by Katharine Hillard
(2017)
Look like the same book. The scanned copy I have has a 1900 copyright date and looks like this edition https://www.worldcat.org/title/my-mot...
They are the same book, Mary and 1900 is the correct original publication date. I was able to see the original title page at archive.org. I am working on fixing the author to Katharine Hillard and combining all copies.

Sorry this is off topic for this thread, but I’d been curious about how to find a copy of many of the older travel books that have been read for 30.1. My library doesn’t have them in its catalogue and they seem to be either unavailable or prohibitively expensive on Amazon. Mary, as you mentioned having a scanned copy, I just wondered if there’s perhaps a website with books like this one available to download (I assume many are in the public domain as copyright will have expired)? Thank you!
Many public domain books are available on Project Gutenberg, as you probably know. A probably greater number can be read via https://archive.org/. That organization has scanned many original editions, or very early editions. I have to admit, I've never been to this home page before. I've accessed the site because I was looking for information about a specific book.
Hi ByronyYou can find public domain books at some of the following —
1. Project Gutenberg https://www.gutenberg.org/. There are other international Project Gutenberg sites (Canada, Australia)
2. Internet Archive archive.org
3. Hathitrust Digital Library https://www.hathitrust.org/
4. National Libraries (US Library of Congress). Search the catalog under a subject heading and look for links to electronic books usually stored at other libraries.
5. In the US, State universities may have some of their old collection on line. Eg University of California
6. Google Books
7. Amazon will have records for many books that may be out of print. It gives some leads on specfic titles that you can find elsewhere on line.
8. Every once in a while you will find a specialty collection on line that has odd materials. EG the Bishop Museum in Honolulu has old ethnology reports on Pacific Island cultures. I find these by accident, but they can be interesting.
9. Worldcat will list libraries that have a book available. If your library will use inter library loan, you may be able to get a book. Worldcat will sometimes list electronic sources that may be useable. The subject search function can be a good way to find some target books.
To find a specific book, you need to be creative with internet searching. Many of the above have some of their collection available for open access, but a substantial amount of their collections will be restricted to members and that may make it difficult to find the public domain material within the volume of not available material. The older the book, the more likely that it is available with few restrictions IF someone has scanned it. And that is a big IF.
The main problem even if it has been scanned, is that the files are not necessarily cataloged with a searchable record. For example, you can search for an author and not find anything, but when you search for a title the book appears with a clear electronic link to the author that seemed not to exist in the catalog
When in doubt, Google the title, author or subject with “ebook” “electronic Book” or similar.

Mary, thank you so much for taking the time to explain all of this. That is incredibly helpful, I would never have thought of looking at many of those sources without your recommendation. I really appreciate your advice and I’m looking forward to hopefully finding some of the titles that had captured my interest this season. Thanks again!
Could someone please add the page count and original publication for this one? The Complete Poems and Stories of Edgar Allan Poe, Volume I by Edgar Allan PoeThanks.
Ed wrote: "Could someone please add the page count and original publication for this one? The Complete Poems and Stories of Edgar Allan Poe, Volume I by Edgar Allan PoeThanks."
The first published is in there, 1849. Do you have this edition? What is the page count?
Elizabeth (Alaska) wrote: "Ed wrote: "Could someone please add the page count and original publication for this one? The first page of volume 2 starts at p. 543.
What other information do you have? Publisher? Publication date of the edition? Is it a hardcover? Might as well get all of it in there. I'm not positive this is a different edition than the other one in there, but actually an alternate cover edition, but I'll let them stand anyway.

Great, thank you. I've added the page count and other details. I think the other edition is one with a dust cover, but as I said I'll leave them both up. People like to shelve what they have, and maybe not everyone is lucky enough to have a dust cover.
