Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments I added this edition, which I believe is the one you have linked. If it is not, let me know.

Kathleen (itpdx) (itpdx) | 1720 comments Harbrace Modern Classics it is. Thank you.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Good! Does it have a nicer cover?

message 54: by Kathleen (itpdx) (new)

Kathleen (itpdx) (itpdx) | 1720 comments No, the cover is pretty blah!

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Ok, I hope the insides are good. I read a couple of Sinclair Lewis years ago and enjoyed them.

OK. Located the cover and added it, cleaned up and corrected part of the data. Should be all fixed now. =)

Anika | 2793 comments I read Carry Yourself Back to Me and I don't know how I keep managing to find the wrong link, but it wasn't the audibook or CD version that I read, it was the actual paperback...ISBN 978-0-547-84802-0. It is listed as having 320 pages, but the last numbered page I saw was 316. Thanks for the help, sorry for the inconvenience!

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Carry Yourself Back to Me

Wow! That one was way off. Does this one have everything you want? When you use the add book/author link you can put in that ISBN to do the search.

message 59: by Anika (new)

Anika | 2793 comments Ah!! Since it just says "book/author" for the link search I didn't think it would accept ISBN numbers :-) I already posted this book improperly a few days ago and got a message from Liz about the problem...so what do I need to do at this point to get my proper book listed and credited? Do I just need to repost the same task with the correct biblio info? (And thank you so much for your help! I really appreciate it.)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Yes, repost. And be as clear as possible when reposting what the problem was, or your original message #, that sort of thing. Liz will be able to find and correct the scoresheet.

Sometimes the Goodreads labels aren't as clear as we'd hope, but it doesn't take long to learn them, once you know the key.

Anika | 2793 comments THANK YOU :-D you're the best!

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments You're welcome, Anika. Hope you're enjoying the challenge!

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Last week Goodreads severed its data-sharing tie with Amazon. You may have noticed, this has resulted in a loss of data that was sourced from Amazon, such as book covers, descriptions, publication dates, etc. Your ratings and reviews are safe!

Since our group relies so heavily on original publication dates, which applies to all editions, I will work on getting these back into the database. As you know, I can also add page numbers, but that piece of information is edition specific.

Here’s the deal:

1. You can ask for the original publication date for a specific book that you are/will be reading for the current challenge (Winter, Spring, whatever), if it will give you additional points. Please post a link in this thread. These requests will take priority over #2 below. With this request, if you know/need the page numbers for your edition, include it in your request. You should get all the points to which you’re entitled.

2. I will work on fixing the first-pub dates on books you have shelved, first come, first served. However, this can mean thousands of dates, so I’ll be looking only at your unread books for the present. Some of you have everything unread on a To Read shelf, and have prioritized your reads on a non-exclusive shelf. To be fair to others, it would be appreciated if you would request this smaller non-exclusive shelf. Keep in mind, this project will take some time.

message 64: by Anika (new)

Anika | 2793 comments hi again :-)
I just noticed that the bibliographic info on this last book I read was incorrect... The Song of the Lark shows original pub. date as 1937 but it was, in fact, originally published in 1915. Also, when I input the ISBN for for the copy I read (9780141181042) it comes up with a different book with considerably different page-count. Can you help a girl out? Thanks! Hope you're enjoying your "winter" ;-)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Anika, what is the correct page count for your edition?

message 66: by Anika (new)

Anika | 2793 comments 434 pages, but when I click on the link the biblio info says 464. sorry to throw this on your plate...just read the post about the goodreads/amazon split. argh! what a pain! thanks for everything you do! (i'm kinda in love with this book group...i rave about it to everyone.) really appreciate the time and thought that you admins put into it <3

message 67: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (last edited Feb 06, 2012 04:04PM) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments OK, your edition is showing 434 pages. The system automatically brings up the most popular edition if you just search by title. You can always enter the ISBN in the search field (either at the top of the page or in the add book/author window) to get your exact edition. When posting for CiV, you will want to make sure your linking to the edition you read to have it qualify on the right slot machine reel. I did get the original publication date fixed - thanks for bringing to our attention!

message 68: by Anika (new)

Anika | 2793 comments I did my search by ISBN instead of title both when I posted it for RwS points and also when posting the question on this thread, but the link it created was to the most popular edition regardless :-( don't know if it's something to do with the fact that i'm posting from my smartphone...?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Interesting, Anika. I don't use a phone for the internet, but perhaps I'll pose that question over the GR Feedback group.

message 70: by Norma (new)

Norma | 1815 comments I'm reading The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest and was going to use it for lenght 781-820. My copy from Amazon,ISBN-13:978-0307739964,has 800 pages, but Goodreads list it at 820.
Amazon information is:
Mass Market Paperback: 800 pages
Publisher: Vintage (June 1, 2010)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0307739961
ISBN-13: 978-0307739964
Please advise if I can use it or not.

Fixed this for you!

Anika | 2793 comments Dearest Elizabeth!

I'm here to bother you yet again. I read The Christmas Wife by Helen Norris for CiV.
While the pages in the book match up, the pub date is off. The goodreads listed date is 1970, but it wasn't published til 1985 (it's a collection of short stories and the earliest story wasn't even published until 1982). Here is a link to the record from my library, if it helps clarify at all: http://wclcat.weberpl.lib.ut.us/searc...#

Sorry to be such a pain. Again. :-)

Thanks for all your help and hope all is well in your corner of the world!

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments No problem, Anika! You're good to go on this one!

Tobey | 241 comments Hello, is it possible to still ask for changes to book links? I have Holiday in Death (ISBN # 9780425163719) at 326 pages (308 if you don't include the preview for the next book). Thanks!

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Tobey wrote: "Hello, is it possible to still ask for changes to book links? I have Holiday in Death (ISBN # 9780425163719) at 326 pages (308 if you don't include the preview for the next book). ..."

I'm not sure which edition is the one you have linked, but the ISBN you're interested in has that page length:

Holiday in Death

(and no, it's never too late to request this type of thing.)

message 78: by Tobey (new)

Tobey | 241 comments Hmm, okay thanks. Same ISBN#, different cover (I linked to the edition with my cover that doesn't list the page numbers). It's all good!

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Ah, sometimes books will be listed with an alternate cover; I forget how to do that, but I'll post in the librarian's group and get it done for you.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Ok, so what do I know? They tell me over the Librarian's group that what you linked is the alternate cover for the ISBN. I'll fix the page length for you. (Always learning something new.)

message 81: by Tobey (new)

Tobey | 241 comments I saw the page numbers were added, thanks Elizabeth!

message 82: by Rebekah (last edited Apr 05, 2012 09:40PM) (new)

Rebekah (bekalynn) I've checked a book from the library that I can't find a Goodreads link to. It is Poems of Robert Browning selected by Rosemary Sprague. It was published in 1964 and has no ISBN number but does have a Lib. of Cong Catalog Card Number - 64 - 22173. The publisher is Thomas Y. Crowell Company - New York. It is hard cover (Library Binding)with 152 pages.
If I read it, is there a way I can link to it?

message 83: by Liz M (last edited Apr 06, 2012 05:30AM) (new)

Liz M It's tricky, but you can.

1) Go to the book's page and from your browser's address bar
(.../book/show/ 13580859 -poems-of-robert-browning) copy the book number.

2) In your post, link to an edition of the poems [ book:Poems of Robert Browning|562274 ].

3) Replace the number at the end of the book link with the number you copied from the address of the book's page: [ book:Poems of Robert Browning|13580859 ]

The result: Poems of Robert Browning

Kathleen (itpdx) (itpdx) | 1720 comments I am reading Passage Through India: An Expanded and Illustrated Edition by Gary Snyder for 20.7 Poet's Non-Poetry and was going to claim "oldie" points for it because my book shows the first publication was in 1983. Wikipedia also shows the publication date in 1983. But none of the editions on Goodreads indicate this.

message 85: by Rosemary (last edited Jun 06, 2012 03:09PM) (new)

Rosemary | 4275 comments You need to look at the grey "first published" date, it says 1983 :)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments itpdx wrote: "I am reading Passage Through India: An Expanded and Illustrated Edition by Gary Snyder for 20.7 Poet's Non-Poetry and was going to claim "oldie" points for it because my book shows the first public..."

Fixed!

message 87: by Rosemary (new)

Rosemary | 4275 comments Aha Elizabeth must have done it right before I posted! :)

message 88: by Kathleen (itpdx) (new)

Kathleen (itpdx) (itpdx) | 1720 comments Whew! you are so fast! I couldn't imagine how I had missed it based on Rosemary's reply only to find that you had fixed it in the blink of an eye.

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 5271 comments A couple of days ago, a student brought me a book that he, his brother and his mom wrote. It's called The Maui Quest and it is described as a "thriller-travelogue, a young man's journey to deliver his father's ashes" and "following the footsteps of his family around the island", so I think it fits our road trip task. Is there a way it can be entered?

ISBN 9781477491225

message 90: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (last edited Jun 07, 2012 10:20AM) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Karen, I put in a request, but I know GR's policy is to not rely on Amazon for information. I have to go there for the rest of the information, so I'll have to wait to see what I can get for policy. I assume you have a copy, and will probably be coming back to you.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Still needs a cover, and it needs page numbers. The Maui Quest

Thanks, Elizabeth! I'll confirm the page numbers with you tomorrow(the book's at school)and hopefully I will get the cover picture tomorrow, too.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments What I need for the cover photo is a URL. If you will upload as a photo to your profile, I can get it there.

Rebekah (bekalynn) I'm listening to the audiobook version of The Pickwick Papers. Which version should I use for page count?

message 96: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (last edited Jun 27, 2012 04:08PM) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments The Pickwick Papers

Lots of points for that Rebekah!

message 97: by Liz M (new)

Liz M From the FAQ thread:

Different editions of books have widely different number of pages, and ebooks and audiobooks may not have pages at all. How do you determine page count for the 100 page minimum and for awarding Jumbo points?
In the interest of fairness, members that read the same book should receive the same amount of jumbo style points, no matter which edition is used. We will use the most popular English-language print edition to determine page count...

ETA: That Elizabeth is fast!

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments LOL - I had been away from the computer for awhile, so my timing was better than I was fast. But I'm going to go read now for a bit. ;-)

message 99: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah (bekalynn) Good on the points because even though it is funny, it is taking forever to listen to. More than 30 hrs!

I wasn't sure if the first book listed was the most popular edition or not

message 100: by Anika (new)

Anika | 2793 comments Help! I'm reading The Hafez Poems of Gertrude Bell: With the
Original Persian on the Facing Page
for underrated. I think I should also be able to claim points for oldies, but the publish date is 1995. Bell first published her translation in 1897. Or can I claim the dates that Hafiz penned the poetry in the 14th century?
