Isamlq | 612 comments So if you liked the dark, twisty world of Burn Bright (Night Creatures, #1) by Marianne de Pierres , go for Masque of the Red Death by Bethany Griffin . It's got a dark world and some twisted people who blur the lines between good and bad... I loved it. steampunk+dystop+romance but with dark/gothick-y feel to it.

Yes, that one has been on my highly anticipated list. Good to know it might live up to my expectations. Will be buying it now when it comes out, not waiting for the library.

message 105: by Carina (new)

Carina Looking forward to both books!

message 106: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (catjackson) I'll be teaching a unit on Mystery Novels to 8th graders soon and I'm looking for some really good, appropriate mysteries. I'm looking for books that have some action in them and are engaging for both boys and girls. Thanks in advance for your help.

message 107: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (narcisse) | 1946 comments You could use basically any Agatha Christie books or Sherlock Holmes stuff. Or Lois Duncan, though I think hers are more thriller than mystery.

Here are some more recent YA or YA-friendly mysteries:
Death Cloud (Sherlock Holmes The Legend Begins, #1) by Andy Lane - teenage Sherlock Holmes
All Unquiet Things by Anna Jarzab - boy+girl POV, trying to solve murder of their friend
Clarity (Clarity, #1) by Kim Harrington - psychic + murder mystery; reads more like contemporary than paranormal
The Body Finder (The Body Finder, #1) by Kimberly Derting - paranormal mystery
The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie (Flavia de Luce, #1) by Alan Bradley - adult book with young girl protagonist, ya-friendly
Paper Towns by John Green - boy's neighbor disappears, he follows clues to find her
A Spy in the House (The Agency, #1) by Y.S. Lee - historical mystery
Choker by Elizabeth Woods - part murder mystery, part psychological thriller

I think Carl Hiaasen's mysteries (the ones for kids, NOT his adult titles) are good. They generally have an environmental theme, too. Of the 2 I've read, Scat by Carl Hiaasen is my favorite. He also has a new one for teens, Chomp by Carl Hiaasen .

I'm a big fan of Aly Carter and I enjoy her Heist Society mysteries. Of the band of about 6 teens, 2 are girls, but your boys may find them too girly. And the covers are a little girly. Heist Society (Heist Society, #1) by Ally Carter Uncommon Criminals (Heist Society, #2) by Ally Carter

Another one I read recently was And Then Everything Unraveled by Jennifer Sturman . It's a girl whose mother is missing and the girl is convinced she is not dead.

And Jenny mentioned these already, but I enjoyed the historical mystery series The Agency. A Spy in the House (The Agency, #1) by Y.S. Lee The Body At The Tower by Y.S. Lee The Traitor In The Tunnel by Y.S. Lee .

Hi Catherine,
For something a little more offbeat -- I loved them in Grade 8 -- I'd suggest Gregory McDonald's "Fletch" series, about newspaper columnist and sleuth Irwin Fletcher.
Fletch (Fletch, #1) by Gregory McDonald Confess, Fletch (Fletch, #2) by Gregory McDonald Fletch's Fortune (Fletch, #3) by Gregory McDonald Fletch And The Widow Bradley (Fletch, #4) by Gregory McDonald

Made a couple of pretty funny movies out of them too, but the books are (obviously) way better.

Catherine (catjackson) You all are awesome! You've given me some wonderful ideas; thank you so much.

message 113: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (narcisse) | 1946 comments I thought of a couple more that are recent releases. I haven't read these yet but they could be worth looking at:
The Butterfly Clues by Kate Ellison The Night She Disappeared by April Henry

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments Actually, nm. I don't think the book would work for younger than High School. Going to erase that.

message 115: by Carina (new)

Carina I rarely mass recommend anything, but having JUST finished this, and comparing it to another that wasn't so good, I just have to.

For all those fans or not so fans of The Secret Year by Jennifer R. Hubbard.. I recommend you read One Moment by Kristina McBride..

Yes, somewhat predictable and not the most original idea, and yet I could not get enough. Heart wrenching and tear jerker. It was executed the way Secret Year shuld have been done, IMO.
I found my self on the brink of tears quite a few times, and my chest ached for a long portion of the book. GOOD book. Either that, or my hormones(which have been driving me nuts the past couple days) affected my view on it!

message 116: by Stacia (the 2010 club), groupaholic, YA-MA founder (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments Gah. I hate that you hated Secret Year because I had purchased it at the Borders going out of business sale and keep telling myself that one day I'll get to it. Now, I'm not so sure...

message 117: by Carina (new)

Carina I didn't hate Secret Year, though! It was good...more like ok.
Its just that I heard all these "AMAZING" things about it before I picked it up, and it did NOT live up to my expectations. I thought it was over hyped, but maybe I'm one of the exceptions. Who knows.

message 119: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I'm definitely going to read it soon. I"m pretty excited for it.

message 120: by Katy (new)

Katy | 478 comments Okay so I definitely need help as I have no idea what to read lately.

I'm looking for a good emotional contemporary YA. Maybe something not so popular?

Also, been looking for good UF/PNR Adult series to get into, that isn't totally focused on sex. I don't mind some sex scenes, I just don't want that to be all it's about :P

message 121: by Samantha (last edited Jun 02, 2012 10:43PM) (new)

Samantha | 178 comments I tried to compare our shelves a bit and here are some of my suggestions.

Emotional contemporary (I tried to pick a few different situations)- Bruiser by Neal Shusterman , Please Ignore Vera Dietz by A.S. King , You Against Me by Jenny Downham

UF (PNR is a little more difficult to find, since most will focus on that aspect of the story) not entirely fixated on sexy times- Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1) by Ilona Andrews , Moon Called (Mercedes Thompson, #1) by Patricia Briggs , Dark Descendant (Nikki Glass, #1) by Jenna Black , The Better Part of Darkness (Charlie Madigan, #1) by Kelly Gay , Dead Witch Walking (The Hollows, #1) by Kim Harrison ,

That's just a few. Some of the UF I recommended are the heavy hitters in the genre, but I didn't see them on your books read.

message 122: by Katy (new)

Katy | 478 comments Thank you! I will look into those!! :)

I havent read much adult fiction since high school (oddly enough) and I wasn't really into UF back then. Honestly I mostly read Stephen King haha.

for YA
On the Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys Pieces of Us by Margie Gelbwasser How to Save a Life by Sara Zarr

For UF
i second that nom on Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1) by Ilona Andrews

no biggie! imo the fifth was waaaay better than one. my persinal fave is 3 and 4

message 127: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 178 comments Me, too. With 3 edging a little out on 4, oh the tension! ;)

message 128: by Hillary (new)

Hillary (eledri) | 759 comments I agree fully with Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1) by Ilona Andrews and Moon Called (Mercedes Thompson, #1) by Patricia Briggs Both series are good!

Also might like On the Edge (The Edge, #1) by Ilona Andrews and Stray (Shifters, #1) by Rachel Vincent . The Shifter series has a little more sex not a lot, but some.

As for YA contemp I compared our shelves...a few on your TBR a couple not:
Where She Went (If I Stay, #2) by Gayle Forman You liked If I Stay...read from Adam's pov!
Looking for Alaska by John Green Just...so good.
Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler Fixing Delilah by Sarah Ockler There is just something about Ockler's books that I like but can't put my finger on.
And one that isn't so much emotional as..."What...you...haven't read this yet?!" : Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins

message 129: by Katy (new)

Katy | 478 comments thank you Isa and Hillary! I'm gonna have so much fun at the book store today!

and as for Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins my friend told me about it like a year ago and I just haven't even thought of picking it up. but maybe now I will :)

A good emotional contemporary that isn't too popular and hasn't been mentioned yet is
And Then Things Fall Apart by Arlaina Tibensky .
Anything by John Green, Sarah Dessen, Sarah Ockler.
Also: Saving June by Hannah HarringtonSomething Like Normal by Trish DollerThe Sky Is Everywhere by Jandy NelsonThe Survival Kit by Donna FreitasIn Honor by Jessi Kirby

message 132: by N.B. (new)

N.B. Dixon I'm actually after some advice. Thanks to a programme that works with my computer speech software, I can now read ebooks (yay!) and I'm starting with the Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa. I noticed that there are two novellas, and I was wondering if I need to read them or not? I've come across this sort of thing before where it's just a re-telling of an existing story from the point of view of another character or it's just a short story to fill in the time between books. Are these books esential to the series? Do they add anything or can the novels be read without them and still make sense?

message 133: by Hillary (new)

Hillary (eledri) | 759 comments The novels make sense just fine not reading them. You arent missing vital bits if you ignore them.

message 134: by Rae (new)

Rae Quigley (raequigley) | 256 comments Where do I find these novellas in the first place? My friend read the Iron Fey series and said she didn't even know they had them. Is it an internet exclusive thing? Even searching through GR to rate/add books I have in my possession already I was surprised at how many novellas or "Book 1.5" etc. there were that I had no idea about.

message 135: by Stacia (the 2010 club), groupaholic, YA-MA founder (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments Some of the novellas are free if you check online, either at the author's website or on Amazon, B&N, etc. I seem to recall picking up one of the Iron Fey shorts a while back for no cost from B&N.

message 136: by Hillary (new)

Hillary (eledri) | 759 comments They were free for a time, no longer so I believe. Some are part of anthologies originally and then released alone. Some are internet only from the author's website and some are released as ebooks only. The Iron Fey were ebook/audio download only releases I believe.

message 137: by Jenny (last edited Jun 10, 2012 08:59PM) (new)

Jenny (narcisse) | 1946 comments I think the one from Puck's POV is still free.

Edit: yeah, Summer's Crossing is free until the end of THIS month. Winter's Passage is no longer free.

They're not imperative to the story. They're just fun little extras that take place between the books. Like, Winter's Passage is the story of Ash and Meghan's journey from one place at the end of book one to another place where book 2 begins.

message 138: by Isamlq (new)

Isamlq | 612 comments so, you guys should try The Space Between by Brenna Yovanoff which has a similar feel to Daughter of Smoke and Bone (Daughter of Smoke and Bone, #1) by Laini Taylor

stacia, your kid brother analogy on the currently reading thread for BTL 3 and that rock book applies here. Though the girl, she seema less kick ass than the one in Daughters, she really isn't... and the boy's story was similarly sad to the one in Daughter, for less romantic reasons though. But mainly, I'm crushing on the writing and the imagery: dark and creepy and different.

now im even more excited for Days of Blood and Starlight (Daughter of Smoke and Bone, #2) by Laini Taylor

Same. The only thing that I really liked about The Replacement was the mood. And her forthcoming one looks good.

oh yes! the topics touches on the taboo, but what she says on the acknowledgements rocked me (I'd quote it but it's too darned long!) The author is pretty good. (even her YA post apoc/survival ASHES was good, even with that being a bit split personality in focus) This one has a teacher/student thing in it.
