Absolutely, for Anna and the French Kiss!

I also adore Time Between Us (Time Between Us, #1) by Tamara Ireland Stone for a sweet love story.

If you want a genre switch, Hex Hall (Hex Hall, #1) by Rachel Hawkins has some fun snark in it.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments The only book I know of (and I'm unsure of the time period because I haven't read it) is Indian Captive: The Story of Mary Jemison. But that is children's/MG, and I'm not sure about biases since there is a kidnap storyline (although the synopsis makes it to look like it might portray the heritage at least somewhat positively). I see that Anna's read this, so maybe she'd be able to shed some light.

Would you read adult? I think it's probably easier to find your theme in adult books.

message 704: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (narcisse) | 1946 comments Yeah, the only one I can think of is this: The Revenant by Sonia Gensler , but it's got some gothic elements (the girl teaches in a school for Cherokee girls, and it's supposedly haunted) and I dunno if that's a deal breaker. The school is a real place, in Oklahoma. That's all I've got.

Britt (kalebsmome) Help me!! I'm coming off a slew of r2rs and first reads so I haven't had a choice in a bit. I'm kinda sick is the typical YA I want something alittle more hardcore maybe a good urban fantasy or NA Or just a great paranormal romance. Or just a book you absolutely loved that has some adult content. Cuss words and all please. I just ordered Anna Dressed in Blood (Anna, #1) by Kendare Blake in the spirit of Halloween. Also I was thinking about Unwind (Unwind, #1) by Neal Shusterman but want something that I maybe haven't heard all about already. I know... I'm a pain in the ass but I think you guys are the perfect help I need.

Have you tried the Anita Blake series? Guilty Pleasures (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #1) by Laurell K. Hamilton
also this series is really good and quite sexy...once you get back the first book. It's kinda lame but it totally gets much better after that. Witchling (Otherworld / Sisters of the Moon #1) by Yasmine Galenorn

I will cry into my cup because I am a failure.

I think that I thought I wanted those genres but when push comes to shove I really don't cause I can tell you how it will go. adult high fantasy kinda dark magic ninja assassins very cool

Also I feel like these must be mentioned because I heart them and they're slowly spreading through the group and taking its members over one by one and you should be next:
The Demon King (Seven Realms, #1) by Cinda Williams Chima The Exiled Queen (Seven Realms, #2) by Cinda Williams Chima The Gray Wolf Throne (Seven Realms, #3) by Cinda Williams Chima The Crimson Crown (Seven Realms, #4) by Cinda Williams Chima

I actually like all 3 of those series, but Fever and Georgina Kincaid get better as they go, whereas Chicagoland starts strong and goes downhill somewhat.

GK is faster to get into and Seth is adorable, but Fever starts getting super crazy around book 3.

message 712: by Britt (new)

Britt (kalebsmome) Exactly why I requested you lovelies. Great minds think alike. Thanks! I'm gonna finish Anna then go with Demon King. Then perhaps try to get into Fever again. I read it half way and I've never stopped a book like that. It's been bothering me so I'll give it one more go.

Have not read those in your list but heard good about all. Seriously, the series that starts with Witchling, gets really awesome and sexy lol. I've actually told some people just to start with the 2nd book, but you do miss a lot that way.

message 715: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (mybookkimberh) | 12 comments Hi, I should be finishing up Divergent Path to Allegiant today or tomorrow. I love this type of book but not really interested in reading about another 16 year old girl, at least right now. I looked at post apolitical books but I don't feel like zombies either. Any suggestions?

I've also recently enjoyed the hunger games and most of the wool books. I was going to ready the next wool book, the prequel but after Wool 5, I'm not sure. I didn't care the 5th book. I think the author was too hung up on his own characters.

Thanks for any suggestion
Kimberly

message 717: by Stacia (the 2010 club), groupaholic, YA-MA founder (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments Angelfall does read more mature/edgy than many of the popular YA post-apocalyptic books, so I agree with Sandra that it's a good choice. It's not PNR, even if the angels are the ones bringing the apocalypse.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments Are you wanting to read her YA or adult series? I haven't read any of her YA, but I think someone told me that Chronicles of Nick is more enjoyable if you read at least a few Dark Hunter books first.

The DH book I read was just okay and I never had any desire to continue with the series, but I know a lot of people are big fans of that series, so maybe I'm just super picky about my pnr. I preferred the first couple of books of her League series better, maybe because I think space assassins are more interesting than random paranormal creatures.

Cameron Mascari (cameronm) | 46 comments Kind of out of books to read... I have Allegiant but I had the ending spoiled and I have heard nothing but bad reviews so I am in no rush to read it. I like fantasy/ dystopias. Just want something fun/good. Don't mind some romance in there but prefer it as more of a back story.

Thanks in advance!

message 733: by Christie (last edited Nov 21, 2013 09:36AM) (new)

Christie (cereale) Ok, so I know this is not really what the topic is about, but I would like some recommendations just not for me. I picked a tag off an angel tree at work today for an 11 year old girl who wants young adult fantasy books (it really warmed my heart that there was a kid asking for books for Xmas). Does anybody have some good recommendations for fantasy books for an 11-year-old? (Something that isn't too popular so I don't end up getting her something she might have already read.)

message 734: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (narcisse) | 1946 comments It's difficult when you don't know exactly how much reading they do to help guess at what they may or may not have already read. Hmm...

I would love to say The Demon King (Seven Realms, #1) by Cinda Williams Chima or The Girl of Fire and Thorns (Fire and Thorns, #1) by Rae Carson or Shadow and Bone (The Grisha, #1) by Leigh Bardugo or Seraphina (Seraphina, #1) by Rachel Hartman , but I don't know if those are books she'd have already read. They're popular around here but not necessarily in an 11 year old girl's circle. The kids I know around her age are reading stuff like Percy Jackson and Harry Potter and Hunger Games and other obvious choices more than these other books that fly under the radar at that age unless the child is a particularly avid reader.

Defiance (Defiance, #1) by C.J. Redwine may be a decent choice though it's not nearly as good as any of these other books.

The Emerald Atlas (The Books of Beginning, #1) by John Stephens is one that I liked quite a bit.

Or you could go with something a bit older (and therefore hopefully more obscure) like the Prydain Chronicles:
The Book of Three (The Chronicles of Prydain, #1) by Lloyd Alexander The Black Cauldron (The Chronicles of Prydain, #2) by Lloyd Alexander The Castle of Llyr (The Chronicles of Prydain, #3) by Lloyd Alexander Taran Wanderer (The Chronicles of Prydain, #4) by Lloyd Alexander The High King (The Chronicles of Prydain, #5) by Lloyd Alexander

Or Sabriel (Abhorsen, #1) by Garth Nix or Alanna The First Adventure (Song of the Lioness #1) by Tamora Pierce , though she may have already discovered these?

I dunno. I mean one has to assume if she's asking for books that she loves to read. But how much? Has she made it past the obvious choices yet? So hard to guess.

message 735: by anthea (new)

anthea (saph95) Hey! So I'm looking for a book/books that are scary, in the YA genre.

Anything that's scary/creepy-- something a bit like the mara dyer series maybe?

message 736: by Stacia (the 2010 club), groupaholic, YA-MA founder (last edited Nov 21, 2013 10:52AM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments I Hunt Killers (Jasper Dent, #1) by Barry Lyga if you want the focus to be more on the chilling part.

The Body Finder (The Body Finder, #1) by Kimberly Derting or Anna Dressed in Blood (Anna, #1) by Kendare Blake if you want a mild horror story with a little bit of romance.

Last month's group read of The Monstrumologist (The Monstrumologist, #1) by Rick Yancey could also fit, although it's more creepy than scary.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments Oh, and I forgot The Hallowed Ones (The Hallowed Ones, #1) by Laura Bickle is great.

Angelfall would also fit in a sense and a bunch of us love that one!

Rachel | 560 comments Christie wrote: "Ok, so I know this is not really what the topic is about, but I would like some recommendations just not for me. I picked a tag off an angel tree at work today for an 11 year old girl who wants you..."

I second Jenny's recommendations as excellent YA fantasies.

I once did a Giving Tree request for a family where the mother filled out all the tags for each member of the family so the gifts were more her idea of what she wanted to see her family get, like educational games, family movies, etc. So it's possible the girl isn't an avid reader but the parent hopes to encourage more reading, that sort of thing.

If that's the case, or if you just want a little variety, I sent this series to my brother for his classroom (he taught sixth grade at the time, so eleven year olds) and he said his kids ate it up. It's a graphic novel, so it's a little different than the usual, but still a fantasy.

I highly recommend The Song of the Lioness Quartet (Song of the Lioness, #1-4) by Tamora Pierce . I read it when I was 11 and it's been one of my favorite series. It's a bit older so she may not have read it.

I love her books. Cannot recommend them enough. Her first two Tortall quartets (Song of the Lioness and Immortals) are shorter than your average YA these days since at the time publishers thought kids wouldn't read longer books. With Harry Potter, her books have gotten longer.

Much to my dismay, my niece WON'T read longer books. But she does like to read, she's just discouraged by the long ones. She's read the Lioness series. Hunger Games was her favorite book but also the longest she ever ready. She's 14. Anyone know any dystopian like books that are that length or shorter I could get her?

The Last Unicorn (The Last Unicorn, #1) by Peter S. Beagle isn't very long, but it's fantasy.

The Giver (The Giver Quartet, #1) by Lois Lowry is under 200 pages. Warm Bodies (Warm Bodies, #1) by Isaac Marion and Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days, #1) by Susan Ee are under 250. I liked all those books.

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I'm not sure where you stand on appropriate books for a 14 year old, but Warm Bodies does have some very sexual moments in the beginning... I probably would have read it at 14, but I just thought I'd throw it in there, lol.
