I pretty much always finish books I start even ones I don't really like but I agree this review is pretty harsh. For awhile I was writing some harsh reviews (not like this one though) but I took them all down. I started to think about how hard the authors work to write and it didn't seem right to be so critical. If I read a book I don't really like I usually skip writing a review and only write reviews for books I really love. After the last Sookie Stackhouse book came out I read somewhere that some fans were so upset by the way the series ended that the author was getting death threats. That seemed crazy to me and really unfair.

I know there's even some threads that are pretty harsh and basically bash you and the author for supporting the book. I posted in one of those and got SO MUCH SHIT and now i just feel like crap (namely, the one under City of Bones discussions)

I have written four 1-star reviews. I feel it is important to be honest, to help other readers find books they will like. But I dont think I have been unnecessarily mean. As far as I recall I have never called out an author in my reviews. I just focus on the content.

Do you think it doesn't because of the content being taboo? Some people can't handle it I'm sure. I remember reading Flowers in the Attic when I was young and it just broke my heart.

message 29792: by Annie (new)

Annie Brewer (anniebrewer) | 2351 comments It could be and that's sad. If more people read it, they'd understand the message this book sends. It's brilliant and definitely eye opening. I never felt what happened in this book was wrong. It made me question my own morals...and sanity. But I've never been so affected by a book. Not even The Sweet Gum Tree affected me as much.

Yeah and the saddest part is they were forced in those situations and it is human nature to love and have those feelings. If you are stuck on an island with someone you will fall in love with them, if stranded long enough. Either because of the lack of human contact or because they understand your feelings.

Those books broke my heart too and the situation they were thrown into you could totally understand why they made the choices they did regarding how they took care if one another! I remember it didn't bother me at all and I was in my teens when I read that series

Yeah Laura, I know what you are saying and I feel the same way. I think it's wrong on many levels but I feel sorry for the kids that are put in those situations. It isn't in the stars to feel like that but sometimes they don't feel they have a choice. I just feel for people, especially kids that get put in situations that they can't handle or know how to handle. They don't know any better and after a while they don't know that there is anything different.

Finally got around to reading Seduction and Snacks (Chocolate Lovers, #1) by Tara Sivec and Futures and Frosting (Chocolate Lovers, #2) by Tara Sivec . I F*cken loved it! I laughed so hard tears were streaming down my face, my stomach hurt and my family thought I was crazy. BEST BOOKS EVER!

message 29800: by Annie (new)

Annie Brewer (anniebrewer) | 2351 comments I haven't read Flowers in the Attic. Though I plan to at some point. But I get what y'all are saying and that's why I think it's sad. Society has engraved in our heads since we were babies what should be accepted and what shouldn't.

Tracy, I agree wholeheartedly. They were forced into that situation. Their home life was nothing but shit and they had to grow up fast and look after their younger siblings. They had no one to lean on for comfort or understanding but each other. So over the years, they realized there was more to their relationship than the usual brother-sister. They were best friends. And everything they went through was just heartbreaking. Having no role models or parents to teach them the proper ways of life didn't help their already f***ed up situation. To me it never felt wrong or sick or gross. It felt natural and sad and I really rooted for them. They're a favorite book couple (haha yeah crazy weird) but I love both of them. It's a powerful story, one that should be read at least once in a lifetime.
