Fantasy Aficionados is creating a list of the top 100 fantasy books of all time! It’s a large undertaking but hey, we aren’t called “Aficionados” for nothing. :-)

Here are the rules:
Each person can nominate 10 books.

Nominations last until Friday, September 16th.

Multiple polls will run simultaneously until we narrow the nomination list down to 100 books. Each poll will run for a total of 10 days. At the end of that time the top 50 books will move on to the next round. When 100 books remain we will vote in a final poll for the position of the top 100 books.

How to nominate books:
- A series is considered one nomination. For example, someone nominating Gardens of the Moon would actually nominate the entire Malazan Book of the Fallen series.

- No Science Fiction books! Any sci-fi books nominated will be discarded. For the purpose of this poll Star Wars and all of its derivatives will be considered sci-fi and not eligible.

- When writing your nomination, make sure to add the book as a link. Please do not just write the name of the book/series. If nominating a series link the omnibus edition, if possible. If no omnibus edition exists/is not inside the GR system, please link the first book in the series. Any book nominated without a link will be discarded.

Example
Yes: The Elenium: The Diamond Throne, The Ruby Knight & The Sapphire Rose
No: The Elenium

Other important stuff
Have fun!

Don’t argue about other’s choices! Save that for this thread: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/6...

Have any questions as to if a book is eligible for nomination? Majority Rules: The group will decide on this thread: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/6...

Think that someone nominated a book that isn’t eligible? Majority Rules: Please discuss in this thread: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/6...

angie, it is wonderfully simple. just click on the "add book/author" right above the blank comment space, then enter the name or author of the book you'd like.

Lee (kiwifirst) This is a great idea. I will be able to use this to make new friends :)

mark monday (majestic-plural) | 380 comments not sure if this should go on one of the threads, but it doesn't seem to fit...

anyway, i think Book of Merlyn could probably be considered as a part of Once and Future King?

message 16: by Angie (new)

Angie (morwen84) | 19 comments which one doesn't seem to fit?

well i didn't see an omnibus edition for The Once And Future King and The Book Of Merlyn together so i just wanted to make sure it was counted since it's one of my all-time favorites.

RedPaint Spilman | 8 comments Xanth series A Spell for Chameleon
series again The Looking Glass Wars

The Hollows series Dead Witch Walking
The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass
Mercy Thompson series Moon Called

I'm kind of on the fence about the Deryni series as the Dresden Files series and the Nightside series are both so good.

Dana | 140 comments Wow, this is harder than I thought it was going to be.

The Lies of Locke Lamora (Gentleman Bastard)
Someplace to Be Flying
Dragon Prince
Dragon Wing (the Death Gate Cycle)
The Name of the Wind
The Witches of Eileanan
Tigana
Tehanu (although maybe that one is considered a part of A Wizard of Earthsea .. it's not part of the main trilogy though and I like it so much better)

message 34: by Mach (new)

Mach | 572 comments I see that people are nominatating the same books over and over again. Should you not say anything about not nominating a book that has already been nominated?

message 35: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) Machavelli wrote: "I see that people are nominatating the same books over and over again. Should you not say anything about not nominating a book that has already been nominated?"

I agree, that is way I tried to nominate all books that had not been nominated before.

message 36: by Kara (new)

Kara (sterlink) | 143 comments Yes. I too was thinking only list books you have not already seen nominated. (so "Thank you" Kevin for throwing in the Night Angel Trilogy!)

message 38: by Dirk (new)

Dirk Grobbelaar (dirkg) Machavelli wrote: "I see that people are nominatating the same books over and over again. Should you not say anything about not nominating a book that has already been nominated?"

I'm assuming that the books with the most nominations are the ones that eventually top the list. Anybody care to confirm?

message 39: by Mach (new)

Mach | 572 comments But the polls will be unfair, if the same couple of books are on all the polls, they will then have a bigger chance of winning then the books that are not on several nominations. The same books might even come on top of all the polls.

message 41: by Mach (new)

Mach | 572 comments The Prince of Nothing Trilogy

The Liveship Traders Trilogy: Ship of Magic + Mad Ship + Ship of Destiny.

Dragon Haven The rainwild chronicles series

The Warded Man, Demon Cycle #1

Those four are the only once i don't think have been nominated already.

message 42: by Kevin (last edited Aug 31, 2011 06:21AM) (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) I think we can categorize all the Robin Hobb books, not including the Soldier and Son Trilogy into one series called Realms of the Elderlings.

message 43: by Patricia (last edited Aug 31, 2011 06:40AM) (new)

Patricia Burroughs (pooks) My list is simply those I loved before I ever started seeking out fantasy novels--those novels I loved because they were simply wonderful. They're novels that have reached far beyond the fantasy readership. That doesn't necessarily make them more important or better--but they stand out in my mind.

In no particular order:

Mary Poppins (The Poppins Series)

The Harry Potter Collection (The Potter Series)

Half Magic (All Edward Eager)

The Hobbit (All Tolkein)

Mort (All Discworld)

Anansi Boys

The Princess Bride

His Majesty's Dragon (Again, the series)

----

It doesn't matter how many times a book is nominated. Each book/series will only be listed once. If someone wants to nominate the same book as others it will be fine. No book will be weighted based on nominations alone.

By the way, all discussions regarding eligibility and/or what/who/why should be taken to one of following threads. No one is assisting me with compiling this information so I will not be reading this thread with an eye to answer any questions.
