If I want to wait to start in 2017; can I at least post my list now, or do I need to wait for a 2017 thread?? I am only doing Circumnavigator. thanks

I have a question and please forgive me if it has already been asked and answered. A book group that I attend plans to read Florence of Arabia. The novel takes place in the Middle East in the fictional country of Wasabia. The author chose to do this for obvious reasons. It might be dangerous to criticize the government or politics of a particular country, given the volatile nature of the region.

According to your rules for the Around the World Challenge, if the book does not take place in any specific location, the location will default to the location of the author. In this case, the author is from the U.S.

Since I have no overwhelming desire to read the novel, except that it takes place in the Middle East, I won't read it unless I can list the Middle East as the location. I realize this is a problem with science fiction books also, as many of them take place in the future, or in fictional locations.

Anyway, please clarify your rules toward situations like these.

Meghan | 264 comments Hi Diane,

Ok, now I'd also like to start an ATW circumnavigator list, but I have a few questions. Apologies, I am sure you've answered these before but I've been combing through all the discussions and I can't find the answers.

1. I'm not 100% sure if I should start another post labeled Meghan ATW Circumnavigator 2011-present, or add the circumnavigator info to my already-started post labeled Meghan ATW 2019 Frequent Flyer. I think I would start another post, but within the same ATW discussion thread as the 2019 ATW annual challenge, is that right?

2. And I think I can count everything I've read back to 2011 when you started the challenge, yes? Is there a specific starting date, or does all of 2011 count?

3. Also, slightly off-topic for this thread, I'd also like to do a US States Challenge but I don't want to try it as an annual challenge -- I know I want to do it as a circumnavigator. Where do I set up that post, and how far back can I count my books for that challenge?

Thanks for your help Diane! I love this!

You can do either. Some participants use different posts for their Frequent Flyer and Circumnavigator challenges while others incorporate them into the same thread. If you do put them in the same thread, make sure you clearly show the two separate totals for each challenge.

Meghan wrote: "2. And I think I can count everything I've read back to 2011 when you started the challenge, yes? Is there a specific starting date, or does all of 2011 count?"

You may do that for the Circumnavigator Challenge, but not the Frequent Flyer challenge. No specific starting date.

You can do this Circumnavigator style, too. You will have to start a thread in the USA Reading Roadtrip folder (below this one). That one you can only count back to January 1st of this year.

Thanks for clarifying! I've placed a retrospective USA Road Trip list on the USA Road Trip thread, to serve as a personal life list up to now. I hope that's ok. Or does that belong elsewhere? I also started a fresh USA Road Trip circumnavigator list starting at January 1, 2019.

Jennie-Lee~abookishwonderer~ (abookishwonderer) Since I found this group only now I would love to do the around the world challenge but don’t think I can read 80 books in the next couple months so I’m going the circumnavigator route. I like starting things fresh so I’ll probably only count books I read from here on out. This sounds like it’s going to be fun🙂

Hi Robynne - I found this in this middle of 2022 and liked the idea, so I have done exactly what you suggest - set up a topic - Sarah’s Circumnavigator and I’m adding books to it in a pretty random order, as I flit about the world! I’m happy though :) And the lists here are really good for generating ideas on what to read.
