This is truly one of my favorite series. The characters are so unlike those in many other UF series. To me, they are so much more real, the dialogue is great, the writing style is wonderful. I can't wait for the next book!!

message 304: by Yodamom (new)

Yodamom I agree 110%. I listen to them on audio too and found it to be one of the best audio books I'ver heard. Excellent narration, with accents and all.

Did you like the audio better than reading? I can't decide if I want to listen to or read these books.

I really like this series. I remember the first book starting out a little slow and being a little confusing at first, but once I figured out how the different players interconnected I just loved it. I had originally found the series shelved in the romance department of my local book store, but if you go in expecting the typical style romance you will be disappointed. It's definitely more UF with a little romance thrown in. But I like the slow evolution of the relationship between Lily and Rule throughout the series. Plus, if you like mysteries this is a pretty good series. Lily starts out as a homicide detective and ultimately ends up working for a special branch of the FBI (or FBI-like government agency, I don't recall exactly).

It's one of my favorites, actually. I don't think Eileen Wilks gets enough recognition for this wonderful series. It's a nice mixture of different elements, though it can be confusing at times. That's why I'm re-reading the books.

message 319: by Gin (new)

Gin I Prefer UF over romance. I like a little romance, but not as the focus of the story. I also like a build in relationship over a series, not "instant couple" in the first book. I'll have to try this series. Thanks for the recommendations Mitabird and Christine.

Emily Pinhasi (emilypinhasi) | 7 comments hi, newbie here.

im reading at the moment The Magicians by Lev Grossman

its about a magicians college. the hero is a depressed young kid , with few dark thoughts, but not suicidal.

i like the writing, a bit of black humor, no lovey dovey things. but as for 23% of the book - there is not much happening, im still waiting for the story to start.

so for now - 3 stars

I very much enjoyed that series so far too. I can't wait for the next one. Have you tried Stacia Kane's Downside Ghost series? I compared your books to mine and it looks like you have enjoyed many of the same books that I have. I think you might enjoy it.

This is one that I'm not going to know how to feel about it until I see how it all turns out at the end. Yeah, there is a lot of humor, sarcasm, one-liners. But maybe too much so. And based on what I've read so far, it seems that Charley uses the humor and sarcasm as a weapon to keep most people at arm's length so they can't get close enough to hurt her. It seems that most people in her life either think she's crazy because of her ability or have used her so they could benefit from her ability. So while some of it's funny, sometimes her wise-cracking is just sad to me. (Granted, that's just my interpretation.) But even so, that it's able to elicit emotion from me indicates that the author is doing something right. It's an easy read, and I'm holding out hope that Charley is one of those characters that we'll really get to see evolve as the series progresses.

I see I wasn't the only one. I enjoy UFs that are unusual (like Carolyn Crane's Disillusionist series) but Street Magic was too...gritty? Will try to finish it soon, leaving books unread isn't me.

message 343: by Lynda (new)

Lynda I have finished Cathedrals of the World and painfully typed a review for the acquisition dept. of our Women's University Club.
I rather thankfully gave up that job when my arthritis made anything but short bursts of typing really painful. Luckily today is a really good day pain-wise so I am explaining why my reviews are usually so short.

Anyway, tonight I will start More than fiends, by Maureen Child. It is #1 in the Demon Duster's series.

Christine | 752 comments I finished First Grave on the Right (Charley Davidson, #1) by Darynda Jones , and in the end I really liked it. It had more layers than just the funny read I was expecting from the comments I had read about it. And it looks like we just may get to see some real character evolution out of Charlie.

I agree. I put the first book down multiple times before finishing it. I'm glad I did because this is one of my favorite series.
