Will be interested in your take on this one. Have been following the series but the reviews so far on this one ..."

I was just thinking that I need to reread the series. I've done the whole series on audio, and I love the narrator, but when I listen to audiobooks I find it harder for me to keep characters straight and remember details. I really need a refresher on what happened in the last book. This and the Sandman Slim series are two I'd liked to give a re-listen sooner rather than later.

Other than not remembering what happened in earlier books, I've enjoyed this one. Although it has felt a little slower to develop or maybe there just isn't as much action since he's out in the countryside instead of in London.

Christine | 752 comments I finished listening to Foxglove Summer (Peter Grant, #5) by Ben Aaronovitch and I enjoyed it as much as the others, although I have to agree with the reviewers who commented that the ending seemed a bit sudden and rushed. I would have liked a little more explanation and more details about a few things. But maybe that will come in later books? And did he and Beverly quote the song "Milkshake" to each other, or was that a weird dream I had?

Now on to Dead Men's Boots (Felix Castor, #3) by Mike Carey

A friend of mine recommended it, said there's a lot of amazing plot twists, so I decided to give a try to another medieval fantasy instead of UF. I'll write a review when I finish - this book got me hooked from the very first chapter!

Also recently I've read and enjoyed The Cutting Room Dark Reflections of the Silver Screen by Ellen Datlow and Tooth and Claw by Jo Walton blew me away.

Sharon Michael | 111 comments I got Called (Southern Watch, #1) by Robert J. Crane as a free download and just started it. First major scene, a 'necromancer' tries to call up a demon and the demon ends up possessing a Jersey cow named Creampuff.

Maybe not your mainstream demon takeover storyline. Promising, I think.

I'm reading it as a BOM selection for another group. I'm about halfway through and I'm enjoying it pretty well so far. At the very least it'll probably get a solid three stars from me. The main female character is very rich and beautiful and she knows it, and while she has some early moments of brattiness she also has moments of thoughtfulness. Plus, she's only 19 and trying to deal with a well-intentioned but VERY domineering mother. But I like the time period and the whole idea of these transatlantic marital alliances of the day where rich American women married for English titles and noble English sons married to save their estates.

Christine | 752 comments I'm listening to Dead Men's Boots (Felix Castor, #3) by Mike Carey which I've really enjoyed. But I noticed they switched narrators for the last two books in the series and the sample I listened to is so different from what I've gotten used to with the first three books. I'm not sure I could handle such a change in Felix Castor, so I may have to read the last two in print.

Disappointing right? I guess the author had said from the first book it was only going to be a trilogy, but I somehow never manage to notice that stuff.

I mean disappointing that it's over, I thought the book itself was great.

It seems like there are lots of places she could go yet with the characters. I wonder if she only had a contract for 3 and it didn't sell well enough to keep going.

From the very little investigation I did, I guess it was sort of a departure for her that she did for fun and it wasn't really supposed to turn into something long running.

I agree though. I think the characters are more than strong enough for a continuing series. I even think some of them are strong enough to spin off.

I'd love to see a 3.5 short story where Lee decides to be a techno vampire hunter. I'm sure it would be completely goofy, but it could be fun.

Last week I read and loved Tooth and Claw by Jo Walton .

Then I got What Makes This Book So Great by Jo Walton and I'm reading it now, but I also got from the library My Real Children by Jo Walton and an older book The King's Peace (Tir Tanagiri, #1) by Jo Walton . Then, in today's mail I got The Just City by Jo Walton .

(I read Among Others by Jo Walton and the Farthing (Small Change, #1) by Jo Walton series a couple of years ago... )

Honestly, Oberon's voice isn't quite what I imagined when I read the books in print. But now that I've done several of the books on audio, I've gotten so used to it that is has become Oberon's voice to me.

You can listen here....if you dare :-P

Yeah, that is the narrator from the audio books.

I think Oberon freaked me out because I have a giant breed and, as owners will, I do a fair amount of narrating for him in my head, so I have a very specific version of what a big dog sounds like.

It's stupid, but Oberon sounds like some kind of scruffy terrier to me.

God I feel insane explaining what I think different dog breeds sound like when they talk. Time to go do something normal to offset it.

I wouldn't say he's likable so much as he's presented in a way that you can understand why he's become this way. You see him doing horrible things that make you want to hate him, but then you see horrible things that were done to him as a child that make you want to sympathize with him as well. I think more than "liking" him I find him fascinating because he is so clever and unapologetic about doing whatever it takes to survive and achieve his goals and he refuses to let anything stand in his way. I guess in a strange way I am kind of rooting for him.

message 2734: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (readingonthefly) That makes sense. And even with true villains in movies/books I always try to understand WHY they do the things they do, not just focus on the WHAT. There's not always a good reason, or any reason 'cuz sometimes people are just nuts, but I try to take the context of actions into account. Thanks for the info. I have the trilogy on my TBR list and it's coming up soon (assuming I stick to my rough reading plans, lol).

Davinia (davinianl) | 33 comments I'm reading a few books actually. I've technically been reading Anomaly by Tonya Kuper the longest, but I set it aside for the moment. The eye-rolling was really hurting my brain. Maybe I'll go back to it, maybe not. Haven't decided yet if it's worth the headache.
Second is Fury by Amelie Fisher, nice book, but so damn sweet it made my teeth ache, so also in hold.
Thirth Shadow scale, put it aside for a Nalini Singh read a little while ago and haven't gotten back to it for some reason.
Fourth is End of days by Susan Ee which is my current read along with the Fifth book which is a re-read namely Friday night bites by Chloe Neill. This last one is a refresher because I'm gearing up for continuing this series (at book 10) but I've had a big break from this series.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 204 comments Wrapped up First Grave on the Right (Charley Davidson, #1) by Darynda Jones , which was awesome! I caved and read For I Have Sinned (Charley Davidson, #1.5) by Darynda Jones , which really isn't important to the series. I did like the look at the character through the eyes of a ghost though.

Had to quit Opening Up (Ink & Chrome, #1) by Lauren Dane . The romance genre has lost a lot of appeal lately, and I need more out of them.

Started up Grave Witch (Alex Craft, #1) by Kalayna Price . Time for a reread and it looks like the 4th book is coming out this year officially.

Read Justice Calling (The Twenty-Sided Sorceress, #1) by Annie Bellet , which was a promising start to the series. Suffered through Mastered (The Enforcers, #1) by Maya Banks , and dropped Shadow Sight (Ivy Granger, #1) by E.J. Stevens .

Glass Houses (The Morganville Vampires, #1) by Rachel Caine did not hold up to a reread for me. It's been 10 years. But I will be pushing on to the other books.

Finished up Paranormalcy (Paranormalcy, #1) by Kiersten White and I really loved it! Currently reading Kiss of Steel (London Steampunk, #1) by Bec McMaster .
