Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments I misread your band choice there Ian. Thought it said Open Arms, my Elbow. Very puzzling.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments I've always loved the Bonzo's. I purchased Cornology when it came out on CD. I also have all the Viv Stanshall solo's and Roger Ruskin Spears solo.

Have you heard any Albertos Y Los Trios Paranoias? They kind of followed in the Bonzo's footsteps in the later part of the 70's. Ruder though, but very clever. Roger Ruskin spear appeared on one of their albums.

I'm also quite partial to Was (Not Was) a very eclectic American band (You might remember Walk the Dinosaur, but they were much better than that, in the same way that the Bonzo's were better than Urban Spaceman). I have all of their albums now. Very clever.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments OMC - How Bizarre. Great one hit wonder.

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Last song I listened to was Christina somebody singing about jars of hearts. I quite liked it though as odd as it seemed

message 155: by Ian (new)

Ian (pepecan) Hi Geoff - have heard of Albertos etc and probably have listened to some in the dim and distant, but can't remember anything at all so maybe not. I blame the drugs myself - lol

Been having a mellow/poppy start to the day, or at least my iPod shuffle is making it so

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I can't hear what is playing at the moment as Dave is loudly and maniacally laughing at something he's just read in the copy of Private Eye he got yesterday.

message 157: by Ian (new)

Ian (pepecan) I hope he is in the smallest room in the house Patti - that's where the Eye should traditionally be read

My iPod seems unrepentant on its musical choices earlier, but is now playing a glorious piece of melancholia

I'm Not Sorry by Morrisey

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I'm listening to songs from "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" I'm auditioning next Wed to be in next years local production of it!! Eeek!!

Before that I was listening to Katie Melua after being inspired by Ian :o)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments that could be our first get together ;-) Opening Night at His Majesty's Theatre Aberdeen!

See you all there March 5th. Well assuming I get in of course...

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments As I've probably already said (shut me up if you've heard this before. Blame my memory.) I have a 160gb iPod. I get it to shuffle randomly by album.

I am, however, becoming increasing suspicious of the iPod's impartiality. It is very partial to certain artists I think. It likes Barenaked Ladies, Asia and Nightwish, playing them at every opportunity. It really dislikes Pink Floyd and Pink (Obvious colour prejudice there.).

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments I often wonder if mine has an alphabetical bias as I tend to get 2 or 3 songs or artists with the same initial! Coincedence? Talking melancholy I have just been playing Leonard Cohen-Greatest Hits album.Classic.

message 163: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Aww good ol' Leonard. I'm rather enjoying all the Canadian content in our group.

Just no one mention Celine! Bleech.

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments I first saw him in concert in Glasgow about 35 yrs ago and have been hooked since. Have you read any of his poetry books? The guy's a Legend.

message 165: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I have, Sarah. He is a legend. He frequently says he is a poet, not a singer. His lyrics are magic.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments You should try Peter Hamill of Van der Graf Generator. He makes Leonard Cohen seem like a hopeless optimist.

"on Tuesday she used to do yoga, whilst I'd sit and watch the box. In a vegetable way, but always happy to say that I was an artist, implying that she was not. On Tuesday she used to do yoga. On Tuesday, she went away."

message 167: by Ian (new)

Ian (pepecan) I'm with you Geoff on the 160mg black iPod.....far too big for my music but the next one down was too small. I also have an 8mg one that I just load new music on to so It doesn't get lost before I listen to it.

Big iPod still being miserable though....

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments I've loaded my iPod to the gunwhales with music (About a third of my collection) and leave it on random as I mentioned above.

The annoying thing is that it is now in aspic, so to speak. If I connect it to the computer to add or remove tracks the random resets, so I have to start again. As a result, I have to charge from the mains and, after I forget how long, I'm about 20% through.

It amazes me that even the software on iPods is poor. If you use your own MP3's (Heaven forefend you should use any other format!) the cover art gets confused. I was listening to a thrash metal band the other day and was greeted with the cover art from the Bonzo's. Apple have never made any attempt to correct this annoying flaw and enough people have complained about it. I must therefore presume it's deliberate.

You might want to try Evergrey Ian. They are a heavy Swedish band who sing very well in English. They are this side of bands like Rammstein and have a very progressive feel, right the way down to doing concept albums.

message 169: by Ian (new)

Ian (pepecan) I try to avoid the software updates as they do seem to screw the cover art up, though I've never had the transposition problem you mention. I will have a listen to Evergrey on Spotify.......described as "dark, progressive metal." Doesn't really sound my cup of tea but will give it a go.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments I'm trying to entice you into the heavy side Ian. This is only the beginning.

I listened to an Industrial band the other week. An interesting experience. It was like listening to a group of people going mad in a foundry, but without any apparent instruments. Very strange.

message 171: by Ian (new)

Ian (pepecan) Heavy just reminds me of crap Scottish beer. Indoctrination of the heavy matter has been tried and failed before. I'm more a Marc Riley man - BBC Radio 6 -7pm till 9pm. His taste is more or less the same as mine.....modern with the occasional bit of prog thrown in. Same sense of humour as well despite him being a Manc and me being Scouse. At least he supports City rather than the Scum.

Take it or Leave It - Arctic Monkeys (Strokes cover)

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments I really must pay closer attention to Radio 6. I can get it on my iPad, so no real excuses.

Over - Peter Hamill

Ian (pepecan) Sorry Geoff....Evergrey not for me ...having some silence to recover

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments LOL. Glad you tried it, anyway. Sorry if I gave your ears a bashing.

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments The pretenders. There's one thing you gotta do. Is that the title? Great voice. This track makes me want to cry which is awkward as I am up the pub :)

message 179: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments 'up' the pub? Never heard that one before. Have always heard 'down' the pub.

I'm sure the regulars in the pheasant would get quite a kick out of you weeping into your pint, Simon!

I miss the pub. No point going since the new landlord isn't doing a quiz anymore.

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Just bought 'Eat to the Beat', Blondie for £1.99 from play.com :)

message 181: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I have an old 8 track of Blondies Greatest Hits kicking around in the back of a closet in Canada. Can't bear to part with it.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments Ah, 8 tracks. That takes me back. They were always more popular across the pond than here, where the cassette ruled.

I used to work for an American company that sold 8 track players and recorders (very rare here). There always seemed to be a problem with the lubrication of that tapes as they tended to dry out in use. Of course they needed the lubrication as they were a continuous loop that used a mobius strip arrangement.

If you ever get back to it Patti, don't forget the WD40.

message 183: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments cassette?! whats that?

only joking I did own a cassette it was a double one now 17 or something like that... think i had a couple of others but that Now one was my favourite, it had How Bizarre on it which i noticed someone was listening to a few days ago.

Tedious link

message 184: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments What a miserable day here. It's peeing down. Don't think I'll bother with shopping today but I must do tomorrow!

My mom gave me the 8 track as a birthday gift. I must have been hmmm 7 or 8? No idea why I've kept it. Don't have any sort of machine to play it on. Dave and I gave our huge box of cassettes to a mate on the island last term as we've now replaced everything (and more!) with cds. He has a very retro sound system. He even has an old jukebox in his lounge. Lovely guy.
He's a mad Dutch man.
I didn't know 8 tracks didn't take off here. They weren't big for long back home. The cassette quickly replaced them.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments I think people got fed up with 8 track cartridges jamming all the time. Really, they were just too complex and seemed to stay in the car. They never really entered the home here.

Cassettes were always more convenient, smaller and simpler. The other difference was the patents. The developers of the 8 track system used to charge companies for the use of the technology to play 8 track tapes. On the other hand, Philips, used to give away the technical secrets of the machines as they made a penny on every blank or pre-recorded cassette sold (They do the same thing with CD's, DVD's and, I think Blu-Ray.).

I understand that Philips used to make more money from R & D than they did out of all their other divisions put together.

On a related subject, Google's takeover of Motorola Telecoms has as much to do with patents as hardware as Motorola has 17,000 patents.

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments You should come with like a warning or something Geoff...

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments A warning of what? excessive technical knowledge?

message 188: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments yes, a warning that if interacted with he may be liable to explode your brain with excessive (useless!) technical knowledge, as you say. Or even just a warning that you come with a large slice of Geek. ;o)

Possibly my life long oldest and most played album.

:0)

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments Ah, Philip Glass. I have a lot of his stuff I've listened to. I need to dig out 1000 Airplanes on the Roof.

Just finished listening to Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. The only Elton John album I like. The gate sleeve was a work of art.

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments I took a couple of CDs to my local hifi shop. Tried them out on a Denon S302. Loved it. Then put

Raising Sand

on in the car coming home. The Denon S302 is now discontinued so there are some bargains (£599 at play.com) but does anyone know what is replacing it?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Dave Is consulting What HiFi for you, Simon.

He says he doesn't know and have you looked into Cyrus?

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments I've looked at so many my head is about to explode. I played with the denon and it blew me away. I don't want 5.1 because I would have to buy a bigger house for it. I am in love with the Philips hts9241/12 but can't seem to be able to buy one anywhere. Titanium and glass finish. Awesome (am I too old to say awesome?).
