Title/Author: The Mane Event by Shelly Laurenston
Series: The Pride
Rating: ★★★★ 1/2
Read: 4/22
First-time author: No
To-be-continued: Yes
Review: 4.5 Not quite 5 stars. This's definitely sexy & funny book. If you like shifters, you'll like this series. There were 2 stories in one book. I like Christmas Pride but I loved Shaw's Tale. I loved all of the characters. But Ronnie Lee Reed was my girl. This book was definitely a good start of a fun series.

Title/Author: The Gathering by Kelley Armstrong
Series: Darkness Rising
Rating: ★★★★✩
Read: 22/4/12
First-time author: No
To-be-continued: Yes
Review: A good start to a new series, though I didn't enjoy it as much as Armstrong's last YA trilogy. The characters were all likeable, just a bit similar to the ones from the "Darkest Powers". The story was a bit slow going at times, but I'm looking forward to the next book.

Glass Coffin

★★★★½ (This is a review of the audiobook.) I just loved this one and Gabra Zackman, a narrator I’ve never heard before, did a wonderful job. Kerrick, the hero, in this book is grumpy – and boy does she make him sound that way! LOL! Though, why Quain, part of the entourage, has a Scottish accent in a post-apocalyptic/dystopian/fantasy book, I’m not sure. **shrugs** Still, Ms. Zackman convinced me she was the heroine, Avry, as she narrated from a first person POV.
This is the first in MVS’s Healers series and I can’t wait for the rest. I thought she would going to go the way of her Study series, but… no, she maintained originality in her plotline.
I haven’t read a lot from the Young Adult genre -- nor Fantasy for that matter -- but this one was wonderful. This is a fast read; the pacing is smooth and tight with enough twists to keep it entertaining all the way through. I did it as a “buddy read” and I wasn’t the only one surprised. Nevertheless, I guessed a few things correctly, so I didn’t feel like a total nitwit. If you haven’t read many YA either, this might be the one with which to start your reading adventure.

Review: my goodreads review
*Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden, with his trademark long black leather duster jacket, blasting rod and staff, and pentacle necklace. Those, along with his general disheveled appearance.

★★★★½ I’m in love with a wizard. One cynical, irascible Harry Dresden, resident ‘anti-hero’ of Chicago, Illinois. People tried to tell me how wonderful he was, but I didn’t listen. He story is like reading a fantasy for the new millennium set in 1940’s film noir – but with brilliant moments of lush Technicolor that you can glimpse when the lightning flashes. And lightning flashes often in Storm Front.
Of course, since Harry can be described as almost awkwardly bashful with women, all the sexual motivations that are inherent within film noir come from Bob, a talking ‘spirit of air’ taking up residence in a skull in Harry’s basement lab, and the next best thing to a computer. Which works out well, since electrical gadgetry doesn’t operate smoothly around Harry, him being full of magic and all.
Bob is just one of the many wonderful characters found in this first volume of The Dresden Files. I loved Lieutenant Karrin Murphy, Director of Special Investigations, with her blonde Shirley Temple curls and tough no-nonsense demeanor, who relies on Harry to inform her about the magical world of the Nevernever.
There are more amazing secondary characters: Toot Toot, the pizza loving faery; Mister, Harry’s enormous grey cat whose father had to be a wildcat or lynx; Mac, the taciturn bartender of McAnally’s; Susan Rodriguez, beautiful reporter for the Chicago Arcane, who flirts with Harry to get a lead on the double murder he’s investigating – or maybe for other reasons; sword wielding Morgan, Warden of the White Council, looking for any sign of Harry’s guilt – past or future; Bianca, madam of the Velvet Room and a vampiress you'll never forget; Gentleman Johnny Marcone, a mob boss who wants to hire Harry not to investigate; and other assorted witnesses, missing-persons, clients, and client-wannabes – all well drawn and fascinating.
Every once in a while you stumble upon an author whose ‘voice’ you just love; the way they write and communicate their vision; where every word is a joy to read. This is the case with me and Mr. Butcher. Something clicked, and I found myself gobbling up the sentences to find out what happened next to Harry. Then I had to go back and read parts of it again, just for the entertainment value.
Can wait to get to the rest of the series!

Review:Good debut for an Indie and self-published author. Exciting plot and thrilling pace with a gritty 24-like feel to it. The writing is good but there are some unusual transitions between scenes and the ending is VERY abrupt with no resolution to any of the major plot points. The PNR elements are implausible and the story would be better as straight romantic suspense. The hero is honorable, tough and sensitive and did I mention HOT and the heroine is engaging with a good head on her shoulders. The characters are fleshed out well with a really nasty villain and sexy Navy SEALS who will apparently be getting their own books.

Review:
Firstly I must say that I really liked this book though I do think a lot of the terminology of the BDB intruded and seemed out of place in this setting. I did however like the alluded to references of some of the BDB characters. It was a nice addition without blatantly using the success of that series to promote this one.
I liked Jim Heron (who I could easily see as a Brother) though he is the "star" of this series, he plays a much smaller part than expected. The real story and focus is saving Vin DiPietro from himself and of course, the devil. I also liked Marie-Terese and thought her story and situation was handled wonderfully with realistic expectations. And finally I liked Jim's backup team - Adrian, Eddie and of course, Dog. I guess this is how the other books will be with Jim being the impetus just not the hero. It will be interesting to see who else gets a cameo from my favorite group of Brothers and the many characters peppering their stories.

Review:
Cass Archer, has been called by the Earth Mother to be her Huntress. It doesn't pay anything and she still has to eat and pay rent. So she is perpetually on the breadline. She gave up her PI licence when she was harassed by a local top cop, but that doesn't stop her doing the odd job. Like finding lost and stolen children.
Meanwhile, evil is creeping ever closer to the town of Duivel, Missouri, it is contained in The Barrows, at the moment, along with the monsters that like to eat people.
Two special children have been taken, one the sister of a cop, Flynn, and the other the son of the local crime lord, Dacardi. Both are being held in The Barrows and are planned to be sacrificed on the night of the Dark Moon. Their sacrifice will enable the Darkness to win against the Earth Mother.
Only Cass, assisted by Abby, the High Priestess of the Earth Mother, Flynn, Dacardi, Michael also known as Archangel and Cass's animals, 2 snakes & a bad ass cat can save them.
I enjoyed it but was surprised at how long it took me to read it. Looking forward to

Review:
Our h, Arcadia Bell, Moonchild, mage, 24 yrs old, part owner of the Tiki Bar seemed a bit naive to me. Oh, she knew how to take care of the Earthbound Demons who frequented the bar, but in her personal relationships with people she was pretty trusting.
Seven years ago her parents, respected mages both, were accused of 3 gruesome murders of important mages and all three of them disappeared after faking their deaths. The parents went to Europe and Arcadia stayed with her godfather in the states. Despite her lack of parents or maybe because of, Arcadia grows up to be a caring, honest individual.
So why do the parents return, make a small splash in the media, don't accept contact with Cady but allow the Luxe group (rival mages) to threaten her with death if she doesn't produce them for trial?
Who can she go to for help? Our reluctant hero, Lon, dad, demon, ex-thief etc etc is interested but wary of Cady.
And just what do the parents have planned for Cady's 25th birthday? You'll have to read it to find out :)

Sorry got a little behind in my posting...

Title/Author: The Shadow Reader by Sandy Williams
Series: McKenzie Lewis
Read: 3/26/12
Rating: ★★★★✩
To-be-continued: Yes
Review: I enjoyed this new author and world. The Fae war is on and McKenzie is in the middle, she is a rare human that has the sight to see fae and also track them as they flash out to the fae realm. The court Fae have used her for years to track rebels but when the rebels kidnap her, she must decide if she is working on the right side. As her world of right and wrong is blurred, so is her love for the Fae swordsman thats been her protector and a love triangle is formed. As fae battles fae, McKenzie battles feelings and tries to determine who's lying to her, who's deceiving her and who truly loves her. Pretty bloody fights and a lot of bodily damage, thank goodness those fae can heal. I will definitely continue with this series.

Title/Author: Raziel by Kristina Douglas
Series: The Fallen
Read: 4/22/12
Rating: ★★★✩✩
To-be-continued: Probably
Review: This was just an OK 1st book to start a series. Poor Allegra "Allie" starts off by tripping in her new shoes and falling in front of a bus and is technically killed. Raziel a fallen angel is sent to deliver her to her final destination, but when he discovers he is delivering her to the gates of hell he pulls her back at the last minute endangering his life by taking on the fire. She then saves him from the Nephilim who are like flesh eating zombies and he accidently bonds with her by sharing breath. I think my struggle within book is that the chemistry is pretty non-existent between the two and most of the book is them fighting what is pulling them together until it's almost too late when the real battle for Sheol and their existence is threatened by a traitor and a new destiny is created. A little disappointed after such a hawt little cover and my weekly pondering, not sure if I'll jump to continue this series.

To-be-continued: Yes, really digging the steampunk series this year
Review: Interesting world building. Nurse by day slips into an alternate Steampunk reality by an enchanted locket spelled by a carnival magician seeking his true love. Crimeny is a bludman, vampire like class of blood drinking humans that are long lived and racially mistreated by the Coppers that keep the peace between the blud and pinkies. Even the cute bunnies are blud bunnies and attack pinkies when they smell a meal. Latisha is fascinated with the Sang world, but misses her gran in her America and tries to live in both. Quite a unique world and with twists and glances at the future, it's a fun little ride. When I read about the magical Crimeny, all I can think is he has to be played by Johnny Depp...

Review:
I liked the concept of this book, the whole band of brothers thing which a lot of series now use as a platform for future books. Though the author didn't bring anyone other than the hero front and center. We know their names but little about them as individuals. I liked the idea of multiple dimensions and gates that can be opened only by the strongest ascenders. It will be interesting to see what these other dimensions consist of when and if anyone actually ascends that high. I liked the concept of mate bonding and that the warrior has waited years and years for "the one" but when she finally appears, they fight the attraction with all they have but eventually succumb with a smile. There are several unique concepts in this novel and also many ideas that have been used almost to death in the paranormal genre but since I enjoy paranormal elements in my novels, I keep right on reading and enjoying them.
I did feel as if this book was longer than it needed to be. I found myself at times thinking "okay I get it, move on already". This didn't detract from the story so much as just become frustrating.
All in all a terrific start to the series and I will definitely be reading Marcus's story. It will be fun to see how Havily and Marcus compromise on basically everything.

This is the start of a hawt werewolf series. In fact there was almost more sex than story, perhaps 50/50.
Sierra Hart inherits a lonely cabin in the woods from her Grandfather, just as she is at a crossroads in her life.
Luke, a werewolf is out running around and comes across her and immediately thinks mate.
The conflict comes from the local bigwig loggers who won't take no for an answer.
I'm sure you can guess the rest, particularly the insta-love.

Title/Author: The Ghost and the Goth by Stacey Kade

First-time author: YES

Review:
There were a few concepts in TGATG that were intriguing but the overall story didn't capture my interest the way I wished it would. The head cheerleader and girl who seems to have it all is killed by a school bus and becomes a ghost. Misuderstood loner boy sees ghosts but his mom and doctors think he has a mental disorder. Their worlds collide. I may pick up the next one in the series in the future, but no plans right now.
