Jada I LOVED it along with the entire series. I liked how he starts young and gets older... you can see how he grows. Also, this is completely opinionated, and I love mythology so I can see why you might not like it.

Man, that Arby's roast beef sandwitch was too tempting. lol"

Why did you want to become a Vegetarian?
Life is too short to miss out on meat, I say! ;p

I have read several books over the years that were written for this same age group and liked them but this one just did not work for me. I enjoyed the Twilight series more then I did this one and I am a big fan of mythology so I know it was not that. I have also read other books by this author and liked them so it is more then likely the story line was just not right for me. My being a grandmother has nothing to do with my not liking this book.

Anna Lee @ Tori- I'm an animal freak and I saw this one movie on a slaughterhouse.....

message 227: by REDD (last edited Jul 18, 2011 08:52PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

REDD I started reading this series and I love it.

I think not many people know the reason for the series.... Rick Riordan's 8 year old son was diagnosed with ADHD and Dyslexia...child didn't want to read etc....so Riordan decided to tell a story on mythology...then he invented some....then he wrote it down.....then came the series....

message 228: by Genevieve (new)

Genevieve I read the 1st one, and thought it was ok...I think it's great that kids love it...I felt this writer is a little more for younger audiences...unfortunately for me, he wasn't able to pull off what JK Rowling did, but either way I neither loved or hated this book.

message 229: by MizziQ (new) - rated it 5 stars

MizziQ It was for kids...and sometimes good series just can't be enjoyed by adults if that wasn't their target audience. All the hype will be gone in 10 years and you won't feel pressured to read more.

message 230: by rupinl (new) - rated it 4 stars

rupinl These books are really great, and the one thing people dont realize is that if you read it in like grade 5 (like me) you think WOW this is such a great book which it was. But rereading it when your older and in your teens, well you dont get the same feel from the book as you did before. You dont find fantasy and mythology all that great. But for me im now 14 and yet i still think these books are great. It expanded my knowledge on Latin, and greek mythology. People dont understand that this particular author is greagt at writing books because he mixed modern world with greek. I think these books are STILL great and to anyone who has watched the movie and not read the book i advise you to read it, because trust me when i say that the movie was a screw up. LOVE RICK RIORDAN!!!! KEEP READING FELLOW BOOK WORMS!

message 231: by Jo (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jo Sure, it's only entretaining, and even a monkey can read them, but...there's one word. HUMOR.

message 232: by MizziQ (new) - rated it 5 stars

MizziQ Haha! Yha. That was the best part about them.

I love animals too, but I also love certain animal meat. Lol.

message 235: by Lida (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lida This series was written for a very young audience. Though they were a bit simplistic, like they were written for an audience that dont want to struggle through the pages, I enjoyed it, and I have read the whole series.
Obviously there are endless possibilities to give these books more depth and body, and I dont really like books written in the first person yet they had a way of capturing the imagination and weaving Greek myths into a modern society.

message 236: by SarahO (new) - rated it 5 stars

SarahO I love the PJ series and I'm 22. yes, it's written more for children than YA but they're just a fun read with great action and humor. A friend of mine is a teacher (5th or 6th grade I think) and she said her kids just love the books. Sure their no "Hunger Games" or "Harry Potter" but they're still amazing.

message 237: by Vickie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Vickie Same here I'm 21. I'm reading this series for the first time and I'm really enjoying it.

Madeline yeah... i read it in 5th grade twice and then in 6th grade again.

message 239: by Monica (new) - rated it 5 stars

Monica LOVED IT... WHY DONT YOU!

message 240: by MizziQ (new) - rated it 5 stars

MizziQ THAT is the question. :)

MizziQ Jo wrote: "Sure, it's only entretaining, and even a monkey can read them, but...there's one word. HUMOR."

HOW DID YOU FIND A CELLO PICTURE?!?!?! I looked for ages but coudn't find one?!?!?!

Anna Lee You guys won't give up will you? haha.

message 243: by MizziQ (new) - rated it 5 stars

MizziQ No. Not really. We're not upset that you don't like them but you are the minority. :)

message 244: by Serena (new) - rated it 4 stars

Serena Trends, Anna Lee, are addicting. Think of popular TV shows, fashion, books are just another part of that entertainment of media's feeding. They are also dreadfully predictable. Wizards, Vampires, and Greeks, oh my.

Greek mythology has the distinctive privilege of being the most pervading ancient religion which public school gives time to. It gives many names to it's gods and goddesses, whom have godly parents, godly children, and heroes and monsters born and ideas of nature and aspects of everyday life. It can be many things, but the stories in it are never truly boring. It has survived well over two million years, and will continue on well after us.

If "Percy Jackson" is one of many forms of that survival, so be it. Also, somehow, it's become common that a person might waste time to read a five book series about a modern boy, but one book by a ancient scholar, or one who makes such work a life's study isn't likely to be as popularly published or given a cover worth a second look.

Such is media, the monster of our own making.

message 245: by Betsy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Betsy I read The Lightening Thief, chapter by chapter, to a group of under-achieving 6th graders. What I loved most about this book was the "voice" of Percy Jackson. It was very much in sync with the way my students expressed themselves and many of the kids found themselves laughing at the colorful way Percy spoke his piece. When I read that Riordan was a Middle School teacher it made perfect sense.Since our curriculum in SS and English dealt with ancient Greece and Rome it correlated quite well with what the kids studied or would be studying as well.
I wasn't as thrilled with his Ancient Egyptian tales ,because the kids although they were living with their grand parents after the death of his mother, were too well to do for the majority of my kids to relate to-and maybe me too. The voice was missing and for me some of the charm was missing as well. I want my kids to know that even "bad" kids can be heroes.

message 246: by Kaisa (new) - rated it 1 star

Kaisa I hated many things about this book but kept reading it as I promised to my daughter that I would finish it.

But..

As soon as I read how Percy's mom turned her husband to stone, I found it very difficult to keep my promise.

I get it, he was awful, he hit her and everything but she basically killed him when she had a choice to leave him. Please dont start with preserving his soul BS. She used him to protect her child and when she did not need him anymore, she just killed him and collected the money. Yuck !

I know how sweet revenge might be but this is not what we need to teach to our kids.

I have many other complaints as well but I don't think I should be spending any more time on this immoral book.

Racheal If i may also comment from a teen perspective, it has everything a teen could want, not too much romance yet there is a sub plot with a little bit of teen love. Not too much gore, yet if you wanted to you could imagine the gore. Suspense, thrill, fight, and a world unknown. Not to mention, try to find a good mythology book for teens that not only teaches them but also makes them want to read. Honestly I wish that Rick Riordan could write with both his hands at the same time so we could read them quicker. :D

message 248: by Hayley (new) - rated it 1 star

Hayley I forced myself to read the first book and hated every second of it. Literally one of the worst I ever put myself through... So I don't understand the obsession either.

message 249: by Madeline (last edited Jul 23, 2011 08:30PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Madeline how dare you?! jkjk:)

Rhoda Crowell If your preference is adult and teen book series, then of course this book series won't be of interest to you. These series are targeted to those who like a action/adventure/mythology genre. They are fascinating to those who are interested in Greek mythology. I'm not sure why you chose to read the entire series if you didn't like them after the first couple of books.
