OK; I'll still need to figure out what some of my challenge books will be, so I'll update this post when I get it figured out!Challenge Books
1. Not-quite-a-chunkster:
At page 151 - 5/26
At page 229 - 5/27
At over 1,000 pages, it's REALLY a chunkster!
2. Let's talk books:
I got so lucky with the first person I messaged:
Thanks, Meghan! This is perfect!
3. A field trip: The problem here is that my local indie is buy 1/50% off, buy 2/60% off, buy 3/70% off - and that's ALL titles, so I never leave with JUST one book!
4. Moderators Pick: I'll have to look through my shelves; I think I still have Sarah, Plain and Tall; otherwise, I'll need to pay a bookstore or library visit
5. Wanna dare me: This is a difficult one; I have so many that kind of fall into this category ... (walks over to the TBR bookcase):
I expect this to be a twisting kind of gruesome ride into the battle between man and vampire
6. Armchair traveler:
7. Random Fortune:
- first 17 pagesOut of my 663(!?! - I'll be reading 'til I die!) TBR's, the first two I didn't actually have in my physical shelves, so here's what I ended up with (YAY!)
Outside of the challenge list, I need to first finish up some that I'm currently reading:
1.
My Antonia - COMPLETE2.
Snowflake Obsidian: Memoir of a Cutter - COMPLETE3.
Children and Fire: A Novel - COMPLETEI will list books read as I go, including pages of the three listed above.

I am so hyped for this school is out and I plan on reading all of next week!I hope to do all of the challenges over the week, but don't really have any solid picks yet. Since hubby wants the computer for the rest of the evening I'll do them in the AM before 10.
One question, how do we do #5? Should we have a separate thread for that one?
Thanks for all of your work Aths!!!!!
Well I am looking forward to this challengeNot-quite-a-chunkster: Read at least one 400+ page book:
...
I ll start with this one and update as I go
I'll be back with my list, but this is my first time. Do we have to do all of the challenges? Sorry, if it's a silly question.
that is not a silly question - No you don't have to do all the categories, you do what you want. Some of us just like to have help to decide what to read next. I use this as a way to catch up on other challenges.
Glad you could join in.
I love the challenges, but I will need some help with #7 since I don't have all of my TBRs listed online - which is because I have about 1,000 of them! (I am not kidding - I have a personal library set up in my house, and one day my husband decided to count the ones on the shelves that I have not read yet, and decided that I have about 1,000 - what he didn't see were the ones in plastic tubs stashed wherever I could find another spot!!! So there are actually more, but I will get them done someday.) Anyway, if someone will give me a random number from 1 through 300 (about the number on the shelves right in front of me, I will count along the shelves until I get to that number. Thanks to whoever sends me a number!

I just spent the last 5 hours traveling to and attending a retirement party for my husband's boss. At least it was entertaining, but I lost all those hours for reading ;(Edit - Oh, wait! The read-thon starts tomorrow. Yay! (Well, I still would have preferred those hours in reading)

Official start time: 4pm CT
Starting on page 232 of Johh Adams (will read through page 385)
I will start with the field trip challenge (great name!) and go to a book store in a bit. I'll see what flirts shamelessly with me and begs to be taken home.I have to think about the other challenges... Should be fun, First I wanna finish the 3 books I am currently reading, which is one of my personal goals for the readathon and then I will see what comes my way next.

I was just intending for you guys to go behind-the-scenes and message someone, but if anyone needs help with pinging a member, let me know. We already have quite a few members on this thread, so this just might be the best place to start with, since everyone should already know the challenges.

*BIG GRIN* I promise I didn't want to spoil you guys. Haha!
Roseann wrote: "One question, how do we do #5? Should we have a separate thread for that one? "
You just have to look at your shelves and find that one book you "hope" to read sometime, but to you that sometime is never NOW. Since it's not recommendations by members, a separate thread may not be needed. It's just a way for you to pick another one of those sitting at the bottom of the TBR.
I will not be doing the challenges but my first book that I am reading is Shelter Mountain by Robyn Carr.
Well, here we go:I've already got a pile of library books to pick up for this read-a-thon, which I don't think qualifies for any of these mini-challenges, so it looks like I'm going to be extra ambitious this week! Picked out a new set for the challenges:
1. Essex County, Jeff Lemire (500+ pages)
2. Work in progress! If I finish the other books I'll ask for a recommendation.
3. A Visit from the Goon Squad, Jennifer Egan (been promoted everywhere and I just bought a copy for myself)
4. Number the Stars, Lois Lowry. I didn't recognize a lot of the books on that list but this one jumped out at me. It was everywhere but I never picked it up as a kid.
5. The Best Laid Plans, Terry Fallis. Bit of Canadian fiction in here. Bought this months ago before the election and I still haven't started!
6. Oh, I might have to look around my bookshelf for this one. Come back later.
7. Got random number 39 so it picked Secret Daughter, by Shilpi Somaya Gowda. Another book I've bought for months but haven't read.
Other books that I had planned for this week:
- The Wars, by Timothy Findley
- Message from an Unknown Chinese Mother: Stories of the lost daughters of China, by Xinran.
- Say Her Name, by Franciso Goldman
- Caleb's Crossing, by Geraldine Brooks
WHEW. I doubt I'll completely either list since I've also got some more library books coming up on queue, but I missed the past read-a-thon and this is a good chance to catch up. Feel free to recommend me any books after seeing my list and judging my taste.;)

Hey, Melissa! I'm in the same boat, but I can never pass up a read-a-thon!
Zakiya wrote: "forgot to start @ 9 (CST), and now ive wasted a whole hour :) lol"I messed up on the time zone thing, I think. I was thinking 10am pacific would be 12pm CST. Am I wrong?
I'll see how many challenges I can finish:1. Feed (571 pgs.)
2.
3. Horns
4. A Wrinkle in Time
5. The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America
6. Echoes from the Dead
7. Feed (#97)
I just finished my first book for the Read-a-thon - not a challenge one, but I had begun it last night and wanted to get it done before starting another one. It was a good mystery set in Maine.1. Town in a Lobster Stew by B.B. Haywood (365p. total - I read about 100 last night, the rest today)
Next book up is my #7 challenge: Pawley's Island by Frank
I was wondering did I again mess my times! Last time, I announced the start 3 hours earlier, until I was brought down to earth soon. We still have 39 minutes!! But if anyone has already started, feel free to continue the rhythm.
For anyone looking for a Newbery read, check out Kira-Kira by Cynthia Kadohata. I just read it last month and totally fell in love with it. It could very easily have been an adult read too.
good thing I did other things this morning. Now I can concentrate on reading - in about a half hour :)Thanks for the reminder Aths.
hang on 10am PACIFIC TIME is 1pm EST, and noon CST - so we are not even there yet...since someone said they'd already started
O.K, here's my plan for the week:Challenges:
#1 - Special Topics in Calamity Physics (514 pages)
#2 - Clara and Mr. Tiffany -Thank you, LynnB!
#3 - The Crying Tree - Random library pick
#4 - The Voyages of Dr. Dolittle I would like to read all of the Newberry winners eventually, so I tried to start with the earliest but it wasn't available at the library. This is second.
#5 - The Eden Express: A Memoir of Insanity
#6 - Island Beneath the Sea (Spanish) Had already started this, so it's a bit of a cheat.
#7 - Overlap with #1. This was my randomly generated pick.
I also want to continue reading my 2 Kindle books in progress:
The Count of Monte Cristo - currently at 50%
The Innocent - currently at 53%
No way I'll finish all these, but I like to have lofty goals!
Ready to start in 20 minutes. I love being in the company of obsessed readers (like me)!
I am in Germany and officially ignoring the time zones, I hope you don't mind ;-) But it would mean I start somewhat in the middle of the afternoon/early evening, which is no good starting time for a marathon and since it is a full week anyway I decided, it isn't all that important, so I have some hours head start but will finish before you guys!
Nadine wrote: "I am in Germany and officially ignoring the time zones, I hope you don't mind ;-) But it would mean I start somewhat in the middle of the afternoon/early evening, which is no good starting time for..."Don't worry at all. The trouble with having a single start time for readathons is that those on the other side of the world end up having inconvenient start times. I only keep a start time so that anyone who needs a start line can be there at that time. If the hours aren't suitable, you should definitely start whenever it is. After all, this is fun, so don't worry about it much.
Haha well I got home from work about 10a MST so I am going to start here in a little...or whenever I get the sleep out of my eyes.
I'm glad the starting times are flexible. I was sort of assuming they would be, and swapped time to read this morning from my afternoon when I knew I had to do family stuff with visiting relatives! Hence my first finished book, earlier than the Pacific Coast start time, but within my own time frame.
Ok just finished my second book (I was in the middle of the first, when the marathon started). I am still undecided about taking part in the challenges... guess not. You picked some great names for them though!
Day 1, SaturdayRay Bradbury - Fahrenheit 451 - 89 pages (finished)
Beth Revis - Across the Universe - 54 pages
Birgit Rabisch - Dublik Jonas 7 - 182 pages (read complely)
altogether: 325 pages
1 finished
1 read completely
My first day is over and I am really beat now... will go to bed.
A late start for me but I started by reading a sweet novella - The Music Of Dolphins - which I recommend as a cheer me up quick read. Took me about an hour and a half. Next up is1. Not-quite-a-chunkster:.. Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. as of 4pm I am @ page 163, so I hope to finish it in time!
reaching the 12 hour mark in T - 2hrs 30 min. Just got 7 new books, so I'll definitely have something to work with! Thankd goodness school ended yestersay!
1. Odd Hours Dean Koontz2 True believer Nicolas Sparks
3. No Permanent Scars Michael Hemery
4. The Book Thief Markus
5. The Soccer Ball Bunch

Oh, The Book Thief is wonderful! I think you'll enjoy it - the prose is quite something else.

The 24 hour readathon is on May 21st. You can start anytime on May 21st after the event starts and end it 24 hours later.
Mini-Challenges
So here are the challenges to guide you on your reading. They are completely optional and are meant to spice up your reading or make it more unplanned. And also, to pull you up from any reading ruts.
1. Not-quite-a-chunkster: Read at least one 400+ page book.
2. Let's talk books: Ping one member from this thread or the sign-up thread and ask them to suggest a read for you. You can choose to accept it (look at your physical shelf or the library, see if you can get your hands on it) or move on to another member. Let us know how many members you had to contact before you got your perfect read and don't forget to credit that person.
3. Yay! A field trip: Make an impromptu visit to your library or bookstore. Walk around the shelves and stacks, breathe in that amazing smell of books, take some pictures if you like (post them if you do), and pick a random book to read. Bonus point if you pick a book from the recommendations or staff-picks section.
4. Moderators Pick: (This is where we will suggest a category - genre/country/author/awards list and you can pick any book from that category.) Read a Newbery Medal winner. For list of Newbery Medal winners, go to this link: http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/als...
5. Wanna dare me: Read a book that you want to read but will still not read, instead you want to be dared to pick it up and read it.
6. Armchair traveler: So after globe-trotting during last readathon, here's a spin. Read a work of translation.
7. Random Fortune: Since we all have huge Mt. TBRs that we are immensely proud of, randomly select a read from your bookshelf. Go to http://random.org , enter Min=1 and Max=. Click on Generate, and read the book in your TBR corresponding to that number. (If you don't have access to that book, feel free to do this again and again until you come to a book that you have at home or can pick from the library.)
Overlap
You are allowed ONE overlap and it can ONLY be #1 (Not-quite-a-chunkster) with any one of the other 6. (The overlap is optional - #1 can be a challenge of its own.)
