I really enjoyed John Sandford's series of books.

Jim (papastu) Hey Sean thanks for the recommendations

Susan | 2 comments On an endorsement from Lee Child (he wrote the blurb for one of the books) I just read the two books from Joseph Finder that feature Nick Heller- Vanished and Buried Secrets, enjoyed both! Also, if you want to find which books belong to a series and the order of publication you can visit the website stopyourekillingme.com and look up book series by both author name or character name (I love love love this website).

message 54: by Nash (new)

Nash | 1 comments Just found this site. I loved all JR and Mitch Rapp series. Another series I had to read through was author Steven James: Opening moves, Pawn, Bishop, etc. A little bit more FBI but really rivetting!

Nathan (Nathan1) | 3 comments No no no. JO Nesbo is the man for you. His character is Harry Hole. An anti hero Detective living in Oslo grappling with a drug addiction and a self distraction lean. Do yourself a favour...

message 56: by Jay (new)

Jay Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt novels ... He's like Jack Reacher of the Water.

message 57: by Jvandersteen (new)

Jvandersteen | 1 comments In fact, you can learn about a lot of new writers in the Lee Child style at http://sonsofspade.blogspot.com where today I reviewed A Wanted Man.

message 58: by [deleted user] (new)

I like Barry Eisler and Brad Thor.

Bertiebagster | 1 comments Some good recommendations here. Surprised Stephen Leather's Dan 'Spider' Shepherd series has not been mentioned, can highly recommend him. He also has some seriously good stand alone books..!!

message 60: by Jason (new)

Jason | 1 comments The Event Group series is a great series by By David Lynn Golemon. It has some political elements as Mitch Rapp, Tactical skills that surpass Jack Reacher along with an element of sci fi that neither of those series have. All 5 books are good summer reads

message 61: by Jay (new)

Jay Re:Jason
You said the magic word with SciFi. I will have to look up this series thanks for the heads up.

message 62: by Josh (new)

Josh (charlescooper) | 1 comments Bernard Cornwell's SHARPE series is probably the closest you will ever get to Jack Reacher, in my opinion. Very much the same character, tough, clever, rugged, and its set during the Napoleonic wars so there's plenty of action and it moves at a rocket pace.

message 63: by Willowleaves44 (new)

Willowleaves44 | 3 comments Prey series has been very good. I'm embarking on the Virgil Flowers series now. Thanks for all the other suggestions early in this thread. I have read most of the Scarpetta books, but have been sad the the main character has gotten so self-absorbed. Grisham is the author that caused my love of this genre.

Willowleaves44 | 3 comments Saw someone else mention the man from NUMA, Dirk Pitt, by Clive Cussler. Most of them are very good.

message 65: by Troy (new)

Troy | 1 comments I would recommend Ben Coes.

message 66: by Dan (new)

Dan Randau | 9 comments I'm really getting into Stephen hunter. I really like Bob Lee Swagger. He's a far more down to earth character than Reacher. Probably even smarter, and much more believable and less superheroesque. Don't get me wrong, I've read all the Reacher books and can't wait until September, but Bob has almost as much insight and intuition but reminds me more of the people I knew when I was in the Army. Hooah.

My father just recently gave me Black Light,47th Samuri, and Sniper by Stephen Hunter and I agree Swagger is really down to earth and more believable the Reacher.
I have been really enjoying the books

Thanks for that lead. I've just reserved my copy of the first book from the library. The scifi reference caught my eye as well.

Susan your right! Thanks for the correction. ;-)

message 79: by Chauchat (new)

Chauchat | 1 comments I love Flynn, but not for his writing skills. I'm saddened to have finished all of his novels, after having finished Child, Connelly, and Crais. Crais is my favorite. Love Elvis Cole's humor.
I'm having to branch out now. Just read Jeffrey Deaver for the first time, and have a C.J. Box in the wings. I'm not sure exactly how to characterize why I like some authors, love some, and can't read others (like Brad Thor).
Of course, I started reading Flynn a few years ago and thought he was unreadable. Then I got hooked on Connelly, and was lured in the direction of murder mysteries/thrillers/spies/?? not sure what the genre really is, even.
Oh, and someone left a Ridley Pearson (Lou Boldt) in my gym and I picked it up...really fun, although his early books are much less strong.
I'm not sure why I didn't like Virgil Flowers. Flynn is political, but he tries not to demonize the other party; Sanderson does not try. That annoys me, but then, I'm sensitive to that kind of thing. Most people don't care.
I spend way too much time reading.
So fun, but it's so addictive.
Thanks for the suggestions!

Dodongrc | 1 comments Hi all,
Just a newbie to this group, but just to stir the pot, here's my sorted list:
(1) Bob Swagger
(2) Jack Reacher (ignoring TomCr)
(3) Joe Pike
(4) Mitch Rapp
......

I really like the John Sanford books that feature the Virgil Flowers character and I have recently read all of the Brad Smith books. His Virgil Cain character is good but I have liked all of the books. Of course, my favorite is still Reacher.

message 82: by Chris (new)

Chris Juricich | 5 comments I am about halfway through the Reacher novels, but I usually need a break from the style after one or two in a row. Haven't read a Child book for a couple of months, but I'm back with Tripwire. Don't get me wrong--it's well written and all, but despite this, they seem formulaic. This is not a criticism as any novel needs a form to follow, but the salient elements to a Reacher novel...well, Child knows that the character is popular so...he hardly seems to change. Drifter, no attachments, and always falling into excitement. All good, but boring in too big a dose. Hence the 'breaks' I take.

I'm hoping that this most recent novel which has him going to Virginia will reveal a 'personal' fact that will change his life forever. I speculate...a child he never knew he had? We will see.

As for a Mitch Rapp, it sounds like fun but a couple of things--I'd rather read a comic book than this guy's exploits in prose. Moreover, the whole notion buys into middle America's fear of terrorism which..yeah, is kinda justified, but the author's close association with such opportunistic media wads as Glenn Beck and others who promulgate lies to abet fear and headlines I have little truck with. The author and character are guilty by association in my eyes. I read the first several pages of the first novel and it was capable, but heavy handed.

message 83: by H.hartmann (new)

H.hartmann | 2 comments I too devoured all the Reacher books and was left with a void. I then discovered Detective Dave Robicheaux series. I am shocked nobody on here has mentioned James Lee Burke, one of the great authors of today. Believe me,you will not be disappointed. Print out the books in order,it will make a bit of a difference. I then went on to the Robert Crais series with Joe Pike,Elvis Cole. Now I am looking for another series. Question for the Mitch Rapp fans,is it important to read in order?

At Amazon, it's $6.99

message 85: by Adam (new)

Adam Moss | 4 comments If you like Reacher then you must give Robert Crais and his Elvis Cole & Joe Pike series a go.

Cole is classy and a very good detective and his sidekick, Pike, is steeped in Reacher-ish mystery and combative capability.

Plus, Crais is an outrageously talented writer with a very unique style.

Well worth investing in a book...may I suggest LA Requiem as a great starting point.

I believe that is John Puller series by David Baldacci. Pretty good, I like the Puller/Reacher pun if you can call it that. Hope this helps.

Yes, Will Robie is very good. I just finished those, very enjoyable.

message 94: by Ty (new)

Ty Patterson | 9 comments My preference for thriller characters are Joe Pike (cooler than ice and hotter than the Sahara), Bob Swagger (these books are a thrill machine) ....frankly I haven't come across any other character who comes even close to these two. I like the Reacher books but have to say they are becoming formulaic and the last one was disappointing.

I think David. Baldacci's Will Robie and Tom Wood's Victor the Assassin might match Pike and Swagger but we'll have to see. As of now they're just 2-3 books old.

I will appreciate if readers here can try my thriller. It has been compared to a Reacher, Baldacci's books, Vince Flynn's thrillers et al. I would say mine is more Pike than Reacher but should appeal to fans such a character driven genre.

The Warrior, http://amzn.to/14TGB5m

message 95: by Ty (new)

Ty Patterson | 9 comments I mentioned Tom Wood's Victor the Assassin series... This is a new discovery for me and those books a every food. Victor is more like Barry Eisler's John Rain without the romantic entanglements.

An old series I liked was Brian Haig's featuring Sean Drummond. Unfortunately there aren't many of them.

message 96: by Ty (new)

Ty Patterson | 9 comments And one more post before I board a flight- I grew up reading Louis L'Amour's and Oliver Strange's Westerns and I am always struck by how similar the likes of Reacher, Pike, Swagger, et al., are to the Western protagonists.

Ty, I'll have to try your book out. Amazon reviewers don't lie! Looks like you are developing a following.

You have to work on your avatar, though, lol. Looks like an author of Vampire novels. Maybe, drop the green and add ominous shades. That should do the trick!
