Not even a hundred. Perhaps 50 or so, to give a realistic estimate. 9000 odd people are those who have joined from the time of its conception in 2009, and who possibly forgot about the group later on.

message 202: by Rick (new)

Rick Harsch Well, then, I'll try to pay attention.

Rick Harsch What about a favorite authors of this group, state by state, by a group 'historian'?

What has read who...who likes who...who has heard of who...

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) Hi everyone, I'm Luffy from Mauritius. I'm here primarily to strengthen friendship with the Indian readers who are my friends on GR. If pressed, I have to admit that my main reason for joining is to post on the TTPBM thread. :)

Paschalia | 9 comments Hello! I want to read more indian literature and I hope this group helps me with that, either by motivation, or suggestions, or make new acquaintances! I will be travelling to South India in January - February for three weeks and want to know more about the country through books. I have already read a couple of indian authors but I would like to expand my knowledge!

Rick Harsch For the Kerala side there is the great novelist O.j. Vijayan.

A great book for all India, but by a Tamil, is Rambles in Vedanta (which includes a novel among a variety of writings), by B.R. Rajam Iyer.

u want the group to give out awards to Indian authors?

message 214: by Rakhi (new)

Rakhi (rakhiwellnessbooks) | 740 comments Yes, they deserve an appreciation
The goodreads awards eligibility criteria is that the books should be released in US. That's injustice

A small correction. Its O.V.Vijayan

Rakhi, difficult to organize an award from our side as we are not professional reviewers. Plus if we so conduct a pill, it will be fraught with cheatvotes.

message 217: by Ahtims (new)

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47116 comments Mod
*do conduct a poll

message 218: by Rakhi (new)

Rakhi (rakhiwellnessbooks) | 740 comments Hmmm
So we have to search a way out to crack this?
Why I thought of this ideas is because while reviewing, I came across a lot of quality books which were not able to get past the slush piles and they self published. Just because they were unaware about the marketing possibilities, their books didn't work. Another part was that some publishers take money and don't market at all.
I read some books in the best selling league and wondered how they got published in the first place.

One Russian author asked me about the publishing industry in India, I was loquacious about it. Then she told the name of a bestselling book and said that the quality was really poor. I was silent because I read it myself and crammed my head to find at least one good quality. It was not even properly proofread. So that's why I wanted to do something. Being an aspiring author myself, this scenario discouraged me.

message 219: by Rick (new)

Rick Harsch Too lazy to walk to the shelf Vijayan is on, I checked the initials on google, where O.J. is accepted though they soon say 'commonly known as O.V. Vijayan', so it seems they have a help the USamericans along device.

Thanks for the correction.

message 220: by Rakhi (new)

Rakhi (rakhiwellnessbooks) | 740 comments Hey that's fine
By the way, which book written by him did you mention?
Khasakkinte Ithihasam or any other book

message 221: by Rick (new)

Rick Harsch Now I had to walk to the shelf...Legends of Khasak was my favorite--that must be the one you refer to; but there are two other novels in the volume I have, translated as The Saga of Dharmapuri and The Infinity of Grace--I liked them all a great deal.

Rakhi and Rick, this is a suggestions thread. Possibly you can carry over the conversation to Chat thread,

Just a suggestion :-P

message 223: by Rick (new)

Rick Harsch Right. Though the rat's already out of the slag, I suggest reading O.V. Vijana and B.R. Rajam Iyer.

And I also want someone to recommend good Hindi literature. So that's there as well.

Vineet, there's a member here called Vikas (he has spelt his name in Hindi too, if it helps) who reads Hindi)
Other than that there is this thread for Hindi lit...

Sung Yee Poon (freeasypeace) | 6 comments Hi! My name is Sung Yee from Taiwan. I love Indian writers, there is not a single book by Indian writers that I read without being amazed by the writing skills.Anything set in India or traditional Indian I love! Movies, music, dances, clothes and food.Would like to find out what Indians think of books and writers of India (including diaspora).Jhumpa Lahiri is my favorite.

I worked in science and marketing before following my passion in reading and writing.Other than fiction, I love to read nonfiction about Indian business or social entrepreneurs as well as management.

Thank you for letting non-Indian readers join your group.Namaste.

Welcome to the group, Sung Yee! It's lovely to connect with not just Indian readers, but readers from the world over. :)

Great to hear you enjoy Indian writing and other things Indian so much! Have you tried anything by Arundhati Roy?

Welcome, Sung Yee! If you like Jhumpa Lahiri, I recommend all books by Rohinton Mistry. Those two are the top of my list for Indian authors.

message 232: by Sung Yee (new)

Sung Yee Poon (freeasypeace) | 6 comments Tks Ken, I just found "Family Matters" in the library and requested it. There is only Chinese translation for "A fine balance".Will recommend the library to buy English version but they prefer to buy new books. English books are very expensive and not readily available in bookstores here.Amazon charged 67% more for Taiwan customers even for ebooks.

message 233: by Shobhit (new)

Shobhit Saxena | 5 comments Hi, I have recently joined this group. Basically I wanted someone to suggest me any good book which I can start with now. You can check the book which I have read, via my profile, so far. As per my taste.. I loved all the books from Dan Brown. Recently I have completed Patrick Rothfuss`s "The KingKiller Chronicle #1 and #2" and I loved both of them, eagerly waiting for #3 in the series. I do liked Robert Galbraith (J.K.Rowling) Cormoran Strike #1 & #2 and about to finish #3.

In Indian authors I loved Shiv Trilogy by Amish.

So basically I like Fiction/Fantasy sort of Novels. Any Suggestion what I should start now, once I am done with Career of Evil (Cormoran Strike #3).....

this group is basically for readers, not authors. We don't promote authors here, though we don't mind if they limit posting their stuff in Promotions thread. The first thing we advice newcomers is to read our group rules and adhere to those.
You may join an Author based group for the same... just go to groups page and type in author groups in the search box.

good luck
