HungerGamesAddict (ach45) | 437 comments I was kinda thinking in the end maybe Katniss and Gale would get together they totally have a connection, but I hate him for just going to District 2 I think it was and he didn't say goodbye but she probably couldn't forgive him because of Prim's death and would think about it all the time. I don't think she should've had kids with Peeta. He's still a little crazy:)

I liked the ending the secound time I read through the series. I am still mad they killed off Finnick and Bogs though

Ellie:) | 2 comments I wished they hadn't killed off Finnick..

But overall I really thought the ending was perfect, summed it up.

However maybe in the epilogue I would've added a bit more detail of Peetas and Katniss's future? I am craving more about their future life together...!

Lea (Peeta's #1 Fangirl!) (3teofilea3) | 627 comments I liked when they mentioned Haymitch raising geese.I wish they would of put a part about him in the epilougue...oh and Gale's ending was really unfair...just I wish Katniss and Gale could still be friends or at least talk to each other occasionally..I know Gale's bomb mighta killed Prim but....

Rachel (hungergamesaddict321) | 28 comments haha lol Samino Thats the same way my friend feels. Darkangle97. The ending was really rushed, I like things to be very well explained in great detail.. and it wasn't. I mean she didn't even tell us the kids freakin names!!!!! Ans i also agree that it doesnt seem right that she made Gale go to District 2... I'm goin 2 read the whole thing again here in a couple of days and that way i can come back on here and finish this up.

message 157: by Kat (new)

Kat I think the ending could've been so much better. It seems like everything got wrapped up in one chapter. In my opinion the book should've been longer.

message 158: by Cristina (new)

Cristina | 4 comments I did like the book but I agree it was very rushed towards the end and didn't give all the answers we wanted. I especially hate how the author really relied on the tell not show method. Everytime something exciting with the war was going on, Katniss passed out and we got to hear about it later.

Also, so many people died on a pointless mission. At least 8 people sacrificed themselves so Katniss could go kill Snow and then she gets hit by a bomb. and FINNICK!! he died in the most anticlimatic way. It was like "wait did I just read that right?!" I would prefer he wouldn't have died at all but if he had to he deserved more than 3 sentences.

The whole love triangle thing just didn't work out well. Gale just left without any conversation which I don't think is realistic after all they've been through. I really didn't like Peeta but if they had to be together they should've shown him becoming normal again. The last time you see him he's all messed up from teh hijacking adn then you just have to believe he's completely normal again. and I'm kinda scared for Katniss having to live with a psycho who could just snap and kill her. but either it was still a good book even though I have a lot of complaints! haha

I wasn't completely blindsided by prim's death b/c I knew it was her as soon as katniss described the shirt sticking out like a duck tail...and I knew more bombs were gonna go off when the first ones did. it does seem like a senseless death, but it sorta underscored to me that the most important thing katniss did was NOT saving prim's life- it was helping to bring an end to the capitol.

you really thought the ending too "happy-go-lucky?" I don't understand that at all...and how do katniss' endless nightmares that wake her up screaming, and the fear that made motherhood such a horror for her NOT qualify as PTSD?

I'm just weird like that. I dunno, my expectations were a bit extreme in the first place, I expected her to just live off in the wild all alone, in comparison that just seemed really happy.

message 163: by Kirby (new)

Kirby | 30 comments well, I sorta expected her to die, but I still wasn't really left w/ the feeling of a happy ending...I just wasn't given the impression that the rest of her life was very happy...but, perhaps you're right- it was as happy as could be expected, but I still wouldn't call it happy. I think too happy would've been if, like, katniss became godmother to finnick and anna's children, was a loving aunt to prim's children, became closer to her mother, gale and madge got married and were best friends w/ katniss and peeta, and haymitch and johanna fell in love and were at least happier...and they all lived together in a rebuilt and beautiful district 12. that would've been too happy. I would have maybe preferred somewhere in between the two extremes.

Darkangel97 Can I at least point out why I dislike Peeta??

OK, so Peeta has had everything handed to him in life. Gale and Katniss have had to work to survive for YEARS. They have had to support a family, and Peeta just makes bread. So it very much annoyed me when Peeta came into the picture and everything suddenly changed. Katniss sudenly has another person to keep safe that never spoke to her before. Now everything is differant. In the Arena you can't be trying to deal with the confusion Peeta created. It wont end well.

Then Katniss has to help him win the Games as well because she can't let him not come home. She's having to keep him, as well as herself alive, and this feat proves difficult.

Now do you Kinda see why I have Peeta issues?

Lea (Peeta's #1 Fangirl!) (3teofilea3) | 627 comments Maybe..but Peeta did help Katniss get loads of sponsers. Perhaps Katniss would of died if she had not gotten the gifts. Peeta can't help that he was born into a richer family. And in the begining Katniss wasn't trying to keep Peeta alive. It wasn't untill after they announced there could be two victors that she helped him. And Peeta was WAY willing to die. He didn't want Katniss to take care of him, but Katniss was too subborn to let him die. I know we both have different opininons and all. I can understand where you are coming from though.

I would just like to point out that it's not like peeta's family was rich or anything- remember how he said they only got to eat the stale stuff, never fresh? and, he didn't have a loving family like gale and katniss. his mom was a horrible bitch that hit him. I can assure you from personal experience that abuse can have a much larger negative impact on your childhood than poverty...

Peeta was so loving and caring in the first two books, perhaps because of the absence of that warmth in the third book it was just depressing. I love the quote - "You love me. Real or not real?" "Real" Katniss
But what do I do now? Seriously, Collins has left us hanging!

message 183: by Andi (new)

Andi | 1 comments I know i'm late on reading the books, but after reading it I wanted so desperately to talk to someone about the last book and my negative attitude towards it.

I had a hard time reading Mockingjay because it lacked something... something that I can't put my finger on.

The book starts out slow and focuses a bit too much on what I like to call useless information (sorry). Eventually I started liking the book and admiring the twist and turn of events. I liked the battle scenes and Peeta's insane state of mind. Katniss and her regular confusion, but also powerful despite everything that had happened so far. I didn't fully dislike the book until the ending. After prim died everything just started going down hill (I don't mind that Prim died, well I mind, but it's not what upset me). After Katniss goes mad and gets back to district 12 SC's writing reminds me of that of a fifth grader. It is poorly executed, lacks description and leaves everyone wanting more. The epilogue doesn't do much to help either, it feels so unwelcoming. Actually, It almost feels like SC was forced to write a 'happy' ending when she didn't feel it needed one. I'd much rather have Katniss dead, alone or even with Gale if it meant an excellent ending with answers to all our questions. (I wanted Katniss with Peeta because she loved him, not because he was the only one there for her in the end.)

Over all I feel like the book was an upsetting mess. By the end I just didn't like Katniss, Peeta, or Gale.

There is so much more I'd like to say, but this pretty much sums it up.
I just had to write down my opinion because I don't feel I can move on without expressing myself.

Andi, you're totally right!! That's exactly how I felt, it's reassuring to know that others feel the same way. Suzanne Collins, could have been the next JK ROWLING, but the ending let us down. She had the potential to write a good one...but she just didn't?

message 186: by Vera (new)

Vera | 6 comments I hated Mockingjay! I think I am just mad that a lot of my favorite characters died- Cinna, Prim, Portia, Rue, etc. It wasn't as good as the first two. I always tell my friends- If you like the first book, read the second. If you like the second, don't read the third.

message 187: by [deleted user] (new)

The ending felt rushed to me, like she wanted to just end the series. And all these unnecessary deaths of like Prim and Finnick. And she ended up with Peeta, but its not like she chose him, it was more or less like "oh well Peeta's here, I might as well get with him" because Gale just apparently left? I was all for Peeta and Katniss, but I didn't want them to get together like THAT!

Suzanne Richardson I'm still figuring out where Mockingjay stands in relation to the trilogy. I will say though, that I didn't hate it. I can see why people would, and why people think it feels rushed, but I also felt, while I was reading it, that towards the end it slowed down a LOT.

Suzanne Collins did something that not many authors are brave enough to do, and that is be realistic. In real life, your favorite people don't always make it through the war. In real life, you don't end up with who you may want to. Some things take time to happen, and some things happen so fast you can hardly take it all in.

It was incredibly sad that Finnick and Prim had to die, but wouldn't it be too much of a fairy-tale ending for this type of series? They lived in a society where they would have yearly game in which children killed each other.

When it comes to the Peeta/Gale situation, that's a tough call. I like that little chat they had in Mockingjay. They both love her, they wouldn't try and hide it, but they also know that doesn't mean they have to hate each other. They just wanted her to make up her mind already.

Katniss had so much going on in her life already, and she never intended to like Peeta as it was just to save their lives during the games. Peeta even said it was unfair of him to be hard on her about Gale and what she felt for him. The deciding factor - what really helped Katniss decide - was their actions. When things got hard, who fought the good fight? Sure, Gale's intentions were good...but he was thinking so big picture that he didn't reflect on who he would hurt in the process. Peeta always thought about everyone involved and the consequences of every action he took. The one person he didn't care if he hurt was himself.

All in all, while I found Mockingjay rather traumatic, I wouldn't have it any other way. I'm glad Suzanne Collins didn't take the easy way out and give us an expected ending.

message 189: by Jean (new)

Jean | 3 comments I read the comment that katniss did not have a choose who she got to pick from gale or peeta and some think it would of been gale. I disagree, when she was having her bad dream it was peeta she wanted with her, when peeta kissed her she got warm all inside her body, she carried that last gift she got from peeta the pearl not the locket with gale's picture in it. when they got peeta away from snow she was wondering if the kisses she was going to receive from him were going to be like those warm feeling kisses like on the beach. peeta not remembering his love for her and instead it was replace with hate and she need to get out of district 13 because it was hard for her to believe that he may never love her again and that when she realized how great he really is. I even remember a part some where in the book when she felt she lost peeta, that she felt like she was having a heart attack that from a broking heart. people in the book new she loved peeta and even gale realized it at the end. you don't do these thing for someone you don't care about. i'm not saying she didn't love gale, i just think that she loved peeta more. I was happy she had children because it was the last hold that snow had over her. she was afraid to have a family because of what he could do to them and she finally let that fear go and snow did not won that part of her life either.

i 99% disagree with you, peeta saved her life, (when he threw her the bread) and if you finished thg you would see she did it to survive, because their "love" was getting them sponsors. the fact that he gets everything handed down to him just makes him more weaker in a way.

and if she stayed with gale, prim's death would be soo different cause i dont think katniss would forgive gale for having a part in her sister's death. . !

but i am obsessed with peeta so we must have big differences in our points of view.

You're completely right. No one can possibly refute those points. Especially about Katniss not wanting children being the last hold Snow had over her.

Mockingjay was not rushed. Mockingjay was perfect. Suzanne Collins ended it the way she wanted to end it, can anyone argue with that?

Jean | 3 comments i think the book monkingjay was good. yes, i did hate that part when finnick died. he was my second person i liked the most in the book next to peeta, but when you are at war not everyone comes home, that a fact. i would like for sc to write about finnick and annie love story. i would of liked to know more about how peeta and katniss found each other again in the book. i hope that he is more like the person he was in the first two books. it seemed like in the book he was getting that way again, but not just their yet. maybe when they do the movie hopefully they will show more of that story line and give finnick a better death that he didn't get in the book. even mags and the morphling girl death had more of a impact on me then finnicks death. i cried more about their death. i just can't understand how anyone can hate peeta in the book. he is just a great person all around that you can't help but love him. tell me something, would you want to be a victor. i don't know if i would, because if you were not from district 1 2 or 4 you don't have much of a chance getting out of it a live and having to watch year after year kids dying and not being able to save them. i think i would go mad. to me the victor have a sad life and they don't have a choose but to do what the capitol tells them to do or a love one gets hurt. what could of life is that. also, i don't think peeta is a weep. i think he is a strong and intelligent person. he used both of these to keep katniss alive in the hunger game book. in catching fire he did have some set backs. he didn't know how to swim but not many victor did, as soon as finnick save him, he took the lead right away. then, he hits the force field and his heart stops. thank god finnick there again to save him but he keeps going telling the other he is alright. tell me, if that happen to you would you want to go for a mile run. i don't think so. he stood up to those monkeys just as well as finnick and katniss did with just his knife and i think that would be hurted to do. the only time he had troubles is when he realized katniss needed more arrows and he disarmed himself so to help her. in the mockingjay he went through hell and keeps fighting. what more do you want from this guy.

I feel the same way. Why fight about Peeta vs Gale when you know that sc makes her end up with Peeta. And I am truly not trying to hurt or offend anyone here but even if everyone in the world only loved Gale, sc would not change how the books went.

Everything up to that is basically just her life in district 13, ignoring what's on her arm. But still great book but my least favorite out of the series.

Killing off beloved characters such as Finnick after he was FINALLY reunited with Annie or Prim after She made it through untold horrors in 3 books was reprehensible. I find myself wishing I had stopped reading after Catching Fire.

message 199: by Jjl (new)

Jjl | 3 comments Didn`t really like the ending and parts throughout the trilogy, but that may be due to me reading an amazing series in the middle of the first and second books of this one. Katniss seemed too week in the second book. A girl that had me cheering for in the first book because of her guts and morals and don`t give a crap attitude completely vanished into someone that needed protecting and coddling. Some, well many situations of parts of the book were unrealistic, I am not going to name them all but after reading this other series, Hunger games books just seemed poorly researched.

But the ending. Um I don`t know how many of the people here read fanfiction, I do occasionally because I have friends that write them and I help out as a fact checker and editor sometimes. But the ending of this book just seemed to me to be the work of a bad fanfiction writer. It skimmed over details, which okay I`ll admit if you were in Katniss`s shoes you wouldn`t remember the details of so this makes some sense. But then we are told for months Katniss was pretty much catatonic and non responsive and a 30 second conversation with Peeta solved all her inner turmoil. Not likely and even less likely was Gale turning his back on Katniss. Peeta pushes their team mate into a trap and kills him, that Katniss does not see as his fault but the capitols. Gale mentions a double exploding bomb, these get made with out their knowledge and Coin uses them to kill Prim so this is Gales fault. I just found it was too fast at accusing Gale for his faults, that weren`t even faults of his and too easily forgiving of Peeta`s. It was the easy ending I guess. Having Katniss ending up in her old district, ironically killing off the sister whos life Katniss saved and in doing so set everything in motion in the first place, having the 3 tributes of district 12 return and live happily ever after together, and have Gale off doing his own thing, not able to face Katniss because of something that he had no control over in the first place. Oh and not to mention having kids, you know, the ones Katniss said she would never have. Peeta wanted them and you just know she owes him something for some reason in the past so she has to go with it. Like her reasons for not having kids were because she didn`t want to raise them in fear of the capitol and the games, well there are no games now but both her and Peeta are extremely unstable, He has to fight not to kill Katniss and I`m assuming that means their spawn as well, and she wakes up screaming and half gone in mental breakdowns, yup sounds like a safe and happy environment to me.

message 200: by Jjl (new)

Jjl | 3 comments Oh and also Peeta, willing to die for Katniss, sounds like love, willing to let his parents die in capitol hands to run away with Katniss, um ok little ungrateful to those who raised you considering how nice your dad seems but ok love it is, willing to let the capitol win and continue with the killing of untold amounts of innocents and continue killing children in the hunger games to spare Katniss`s life, ya that does not equal true love that is blind and reckless infatuation.

Now Gale, even though you want to go to the games to protect Katniss you stay behind to look after her family because that is what she would want you to do, hmmm kinda sounds like a decent move for a friend. agreeing to run away with katniss to save both their families and willing to die protecting her and those she loves, well sounds like love to me. Taking back the running away bit to stay and fight for those innocents that are still in danger of the capitol, hmmm doesn`t seem like blindness to me, shouldnt he be groveling at her feet if he loves her, huh a man that has beliefs, weird. going to retrieve Prim from their apartment in 13 before bombing to make sure those Katniss loves are safe and alive with her even if it costs his life, again, well I`m sorry this is looking like true love to me. Telling Peeta that Katniss will end up with whoever she is unable to survive without. Well to me that sounds 100% like the Katniss I know, who refuses to fall truly in love, who else should she love but the one person she can`t live without. Sounds like Gale knows Katniss better than she does herself. Someone loving you even though they know all your faults, all your weaknesses, Loving you even though they know you may love another and still trying to make sure you are happy without them, someone who doesn`t blindly follow but walks beside you with eyes wide open, how did Peeta even compete let alone win this fight.
