Well, as long as we feed them and love up on them. I believe their loyalty begins and ends with their tummies ;)

Rusty (rustyshackleford) This is one of the great things about being a guy. If tv has taught me anything, it's the fact that hot women love to marry guys that weigh three times as much as they do - just look at any sit com. Speaking of that, I should probably put on some weight, if I want to keep my hot woman. Excuse me, I'm going to go deep fry a log of cookie dough.

message 103: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony Yum Buns! I like it, Nick.

Yes, Rusty brings up a great point. What do women think of the fact that guys on sitcoms can get as fat as they want but women have to be thin pretty much no matter what?

Which reminds me, 30 Rock did a great set of episodes on this in which a character got so fat she became popular because her being fat became part of her image...so the producers of the (fake) show (on the show) decided she either had to be really fat or really thin to be popular. Nothing in between.

The same fat guy/thin woman double standard exists to an extent in country music too, I think, although there are some study guys in country music, to be fair.

I like the word 'biscuit'. "Whaddya want for nothin? Rubber biscuit!!"

Biscuits and tea are my favorite part of the day when I'm in Great Britain. Especially when they haul out the cheese plate and the fruit. Oh man. Tea is a wondrous thing.

I have been watching the show "How to Look Good Naked" with Carson Kreeley. I am in love with this show. It's the only thing that makes me instantly happy to watch. It's kind of sad that we need a gay man to teach us to love our bodies, ya know?

exactly. It reminds me every single time that thinking like that is just plain crazy. I have so many body image issues I could sell them as a team of horses to pull the Budweiser wagon. So this show I LOVE.

Yes, I watch What Not to Wear, and I was glad when they stopped trying so hard to be snarky, and just focused on getting the women to value themselves enough to dress decently.

I think it must have flown better in the British version, but Americans aren't so good at taking personal criticism.

message 107: by Misty (new)

Misty I used to be one of those who wore my hair in a knot all the time. Currently, I'm satisfied with the way my short do looks, but If you find one that doesn't annoy with hair in the face all the time, let me know. I'm still searching for that.

message 108: by Cyril (new)

Cyril I think the producers like it when someone puts up a little fight - drama can increase ratings.

I always wonder at the women with the hair, too. Long, straggly hair they aren't doing anything, with, but they don't want Nick to cut it.
I find myself yelling at the TV, "it will grow back!"
Sherri, it sounds like even our hair is similar. I've got wavy hair I don't know how to take advantage of, and if I let the stylist put in the long bangs they seem so fond of lately, I can't do anything with them. I seem to be in a "growing the bangs out" endless loop.

I got a "pixie cut" when I was six, and HATED it, Sherri.
That photo of you is adorable, I must say!

message 111: by Dave (new)

Dave Russell I'm interrupting this thread again to announce that a second person has dropped me as a friend. This isn't as bad, though, since I figured out who this person is. It was one of the riff-raff whom I'd never had any interaction with, but still how am I going to make it to 100 friends if this keeps happening?

message 112: by Dave (new)

Dave Russell Well, jeez, thanks to the three people who have sent me friend requests since I wrote that. I swear that wasn't the purpose of the post, but thanks people.

I could probably pull off a hair cut... you may want to refrain from going into public for a brief spell afterwards but you know, I could do it.

message 114: by Rusty (new)

Rusty (rustyshackleford) Haircuts are easy, Nick. All you need are electric clippers, and a #1 blade guard on it. I’ve given myself plenty of haircuts.

The wife doesn’t really like it, but what are you gonna do? Sometimes she’s out of town, and there’s no way I’m paying good money for that.

Particularly the acting. Tis an exhibition of virtuoso gormlessness.
Why should country equate to thick?

I finished a book instead of going to bed when I should have. Again. I'm going to feel like a slug all day, I can tell.

Hey, Dave! You don't have to WAIT for friends requests, you know. YOU could do the requesting.

Find some folks who like the same books you do, and ask them! And who could say no to that avatar?

message 118: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony Screw that. I'm with Dave. I wait until people request me. I want to be the prettiest girl at the dance.

message 119: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony I don't say no! I'm easy.

(No, not that way.)

message 120: by Dave (new)

Dave Russell I've requested people I've interacted with before (like you,) but it's hard finding people with similar books or interests to mine, because everybody's so idiosyncratic in their choice of books and interests. I wish there were a search function to find people with say 90% same taste in books to mine. Besides I have to have a reasonable belief they'll say yes before I do, because of my deep seated (or is it seeded?) fear of rejection. Also, if I request them just to get my numbers up to 100, I feel that's cheating (and I don't want to be friend collector.) I have to find the right people (again like you.)

message 121: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony (Actually, I do request people every now and then. But I agree with Dave, I fear rejection. Also I'm friends already with just about everyone on the boards, and I don't want to be one of those people with 600 friends for no good reason.)

message 122: by Jackie "the Librarian", Cool Star Trek Nerd (new)

Jackie "the Librarian" | 1811 comments Mod
Dave, you might need to join some new groups, so that new people can meet you. How about that SF group? It looks kind of interesting.

(I don't request friends that often myself, but then, I don't have a goal of getting 100 friends, either.)

message 123: by RandomAnthony (last edited Sep 22, 2008 11:09AM) (new)

RandomAnthony I feel too much like the sort of person one is nice to but really would rather ignore.

Shut up, dork. No one wants to ignore you.

(And by the way, apparently all of us who are friends with Sherri aren't popular:)

message 124: by Jackie "the Librarian", Cool Star Trek Nerd (new)

Jackie "the Librarian" | 1811 comments Mod
Sherri, it's scary how much we think alike. I'm always so ready to be ignored, that I am tickled pink when I'm not.

message 125: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony I actually prefer people leave me alone so I can read the book...

Yes, sometimes I want to just curl up in a comfy corner and read. But it's nice to be paid attention to when you actually say something.

I'd say something about fluffing him up with a good pounding, but there's two double-entendres in there I don't want to make, Sherri.

message 130: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony I almost don't know what to cut and paste and italicize, it's all so rife with subtext...

It's raining here, too, Sherri. I think I might let myself give in to temptation, and walk over to the Royal Bean for a mocha...

message 139: by Lori (new)

Lori Heh. For a change, it's NOT raining here!

message 140: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony I wish it were raining. It's still 75 and sunny here, been this way all week. It's almost October in Wisconsin, people. I hear it's getting cooler next week...can't wait.

message 141: by Cyril (new)

Cyril I have a few anti-cheers I've saved up over the last week.

-I went to Orlando, including Disney World
-I hemorrhaged money.
-My parents joined us there
-My daughter threw up on me in the Magic Kingdom - twice
-Someone decided to ask me directions while my daughter was throwing up on me

message 142: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony What caused her to throw up? Did you supply said directions while being vomited upon?

Hurray for hummingbirds! And for grass nice enough to walk barefoot through!

As I walked over to get a mocha at the Royal Bean, I looked around at the wet foliage, and thought how quickly this place would be buried in blackberry canes if we let it. They sit there, lurking in plain site, just waiting until we let our guard down...

message 144: by Lori (new)

Lori I heard the news today, oh boy!

:)

message 145: by Cyril (new)

Cyril I took a walk with the family this morning and saw dog crap on people's lawns every 10 yards or so. Why can't people clean after their pets?

message 146: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) It rained hard this morning and my cats have tracked mud through the entire apartment which is floored with white ceramic tiles (why would anyone design a floor like that I don't know).

Shouldn't that be in the "what cheered you up thread",Koe?

message 148: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) The electricity company. After last night's hurricane current was restored to the whole island around midday except my area (rainforest) which is the least important part of the island and so I didn't get it back until nearly 8 pm tonight. No internet, no Goodreads, I felt deprived.

message 149: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony Does it seem to anyone else that hurricane season lasts, uh, pretty much all year these days? I don't know how your southerners do it...hope you're ok, Petra.

Koe, check gallup.com and pollster.com...I think you're reading the "Likely voters/traditional" category, while the other categories still have some breathing room for Obama. Pollster.com still has Obama at 50-42.

This has been one of my worst weeks in recent memory. My oldest son has strep throat and because my wife started a new teaching job this year she's gone to work and I've done the schedule acrobatic thing to take care of him. Yesterday he came to work with me...he was quarantined in my office while I taught. I'm on strep meds now, too. Did anyone else have parents who never missed a fucking day of work? My dad thought childhood illnesses were a sign of weakness. Now I feel guilty when I'm sick. Fuck you, dad!

Today I just want to sit in my closet with a blanket over my head. I don't have meetings, thank god. I might go for a walk in the woods or something.

And why aren't any of your people up at 3 in the morning to talk with me? Huh? HUH?

message 150: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony I told your cats to shit on your rug. So there.
