Young Adult Fiction for Adults discussion
What are you reading now?
Lord help me but I couldn't stay out of it.It bothers me that he's pretty much saying you think the book should be censored and you never say anything of the sorts. You just say that it's violent and if it's anything like the first one it is violent.
Carmel wrote: "Did you write something Cassi!!"I told him that Wendy F's review never suggested censorship....and there may have been something about taking her innocent words and putting them on his soapbox.
I also suggested him re-reading her review to point out where she mentioned censorship. Overall I held back what I really wanted to say which was "It's very unprofessional and shows poor judgement to argue negative reviews." I didn't even call him stupid.
Carmel wrote: "Ha ha Cassi, you stirrer you!!LOL"It just bothers me that I feel like he thinks he can talk people out of medicore reviews. FREEDOM OF THE PRESSES!!!!!!!!!!!! And besides a reviewers obligation is to other readers, not the author's ego.
Don't mess with my peeps! I'm a loyal friend.
Carmel wrote: "Totally agree with you Cassi, very unprofessional & he's probably causing himself untold stress by worrying about every review! Lucky you're around to protect the peeps Cassi:)"
I don't even understand why he would do that. I once gave a negative review of a book on youtube. I get haters on that video DAILY. People insulting me, calling me stupid, just being trolls in general. I don't even read the comments anymore and I don't argue with the comments. If I know better shouldn't he?
And Wendy liked the series and planned to continue! Why argue with her of all people?
Huh, I didn't see anything bad in his response? Maybe I need to reread it, it didn't sound like he was arguing...
I think the first post he left was arguing in a very articulate way. I did tilt my head in confusion because I didn't know what part he was responding to in my review, other then the violence. I think he was trying to point out that perhaps I felt that way because I'm an adult, and that kids feel the opposite. Which I think is very true, I probably do feel that way because I'm an adult with a child that's under the age of 15 (and therefore in his world would be alone, and that pushes my mommy buttons, the first book made me cry!).I thought his second post was more conversational, about me saying that I would allow my child to read the series and that I believe that kids should have as much free reign when reading as possible.
The difference between Grant and the chick from Big Al is is that he's very articulate (she was arguing that it was written well and her thread posts were filled with grammatical errors). And that he was trying not to be insulting. I doubt he would allow himself to get to the place where he's telling people to eff off, haha. It makes me want to respond to him the same way, and in the end I think Grant and I are both saying the same thing.
I'll also say that I went to Plague's book page on Goodreads and looked through the other 3 stars or less reviews and he hadn't commented on those, so I find it flattering that he found something in my review that made him want to respond. It means that my review was pretty darn good!
The follow-up posts were a lot more sensible Wendy F...perhaps he realized the tone of his first one was unclear/open to interpretation and possibly misguided. (Or he's backtracking, who knows.) But it's great that your review sparked a discussion! I never get upset when I'm talking to people who disagree with me, only when they are rude, condescending, or aren't open to hearing other points of view. When you're the author, all eyes on on you so he really needs to be careful in how he comes across.Back on track with this discussion, I just finished Girl in the Steel Corset, which was just okay. I think I'm starting one of these next:
Even though he wasn't downright rude, I think there is an intimidating factor when you post on semi-negative reviews to debate the reviewers point of view.I think what especially bothered me was that he brought up censorship when you never implied you thought the book should be censored. To me that's a serious accusation even if only hinted at. We're not censors! We're good reading folk!

It was indimidating! I think I said that in my last post (that I was nervous). How to respond to that without escalating? But he wasn't rude, and I'll have to retract my comment about him not being interested in dialogue, because he obviously was. And towards the end I actually didn't mind because he was expressing himself in a polite way and was nice. So whatever.
I'm still flattered, lol.

If it doesn't bother you then that is great. I just thought he was discouraging negative reviews and I'm a bit of a freedom of speech preacher.
I ended up not going how I thought it was. And I still think it's pretty cool that even though he had a few 3 star revies he chose mine. Okay, I'm done talking about it.

I'm reading Mockingjay its so good but seriously depressing! I'm only halfway through and I've already cried once.
Gini wrote: "I'm reading Mockingjay its so good but seriously depressing! I'm only halfway through and I've already cried once."Yes it is (good and depressing).
Its a joyful sorrowful experience for me. I just got to the part where Peeta is all messed up its so effing sad!
I just got my copy of The Hunger Games back from being borrowed out, I think I might re-read it again!!!!
I'm currently reading Cross My Heart and Hope To Spy by Ally Carter. I'm planning to read the entire Gallagher Girls series this week :)
Ninth Grade Slays by Heather Brewer is what I'm currently reading. My mom bought the whole series (minus the first book, which I had to find on the net) so, I'm diving right in. Short, but interesting books.
just finished Mockinjay. I'm all conflicted I'm not sure if I loved it or hated it. It was so depressing but good. I guess it was in a way a totally organic ending to the trilogy. I was sad about Finnikan.
Sigh. Now I seem to be digging my way into the adventures of Mac too.I really need to get back to focusing on, oh, ONE book at a time. :P
Catie wrote: "Haha!! That's one step away from BDB, Lloyd! You're on your way!"Sigh. I suppose.
The question is -- where, exactly? :P
HAHAHA! Oh Lloyd... I've read those and I thought, does he really mean the Fever series? So I looked at your books and you sneakily avoided listing it in your 'currently reading' list.It is a step closer to BDB, but it's not a romance. Don't worry, it just makes you so much cooler, swear!

Yeah, I didn't put
on there either. What am I, nuts?! :Plol
Fever is a bit grittier than BDB, so you're still in the realm of cool for now. Not that any of us would complain if you read BDB, but at least you haven't totally sold out yet. *evil grin*Honestly, if you like romance but not too much of it, I'd steer clear from BDB and stick with the Urban Fantasy books (well some of them at least. some UF's walk the line between UF and PNR).
Yeah, it was seeing my wife order the book at the library that got me started. We haven't shared much in common lately and this is probably more readable to me right now than Outlander would be. I asked what made her order the book and she said all the mothers on her Mommy board were talking about it.So...just trying to be a good husband. She'll blur through the series while I'm still reading the first book, I'm sure.
I've yet to meet a man that's read Outlander. I've read reviews by men, but nobody I've known. I have to say, that is some serious husband points.

I started once and made it about 100 or so pages. But even my wife isn't that thrilled with the series beyond the first 3 or so books...so it's doubtful I'll read them. Too many other books out there.
I think it rocks that you give different books a chance, and that you enjoy reading. I try and try to get my husband to read.
Carmel wrote: "Lloyd I think it is so funny that you are sheepish about revealing some of your recent reads, it's very cute. You don't have to be sheepish around this lot they can see right through that, they kno..."Well, I have spent most of my life reading books, comics and listening to music that others tend to roll their eyes at. So I'm not used to being so open. I'll be open here...if not on my home page (which posts to my FB wall) :P

Lloyd be proud. I actually picked up the Twilight series because I guy convinced me it was good. I have yet to introduce him to the Fever series though, which is SO much better than Bella/Jacob/Edward angst!
My bf is kind of reading again and it is because I made him listen to Bloody Jack on audio book the last time we drove a long distance. He tried to pretend he wasn't into it and I turned it off after I thought he woke up and then like an hour from home he was like you can play that if you want and admitted to have paid attention for the majority of it. Now he sometimes listens to books at work but he hasn't admitted to finishing Bloody Jack!
Yay for Bloody Jack on audio! We need to get Wendy to listen to it! Lloyd you know we love you. p.s. The Fever series is much better than "the series that shall not be named". Hopefully Shannen would not disagree too much with that since she recommended the Fever series to all of us!
Just started reading Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater... Enjoying it so far & looks like this is going to be a quick read! ;)

Hahaha, I'm going to listen to it. I'm still working my way through Outlander. I only listen for a few hours on the weekend.
