What are new-in-2011 books are you looking forward to reading?

I recently discovered that you can sort things by date of publication here on Goodreads. And I realized almost simultaneously that there are a lot of books I'm looking forward to reading next year.

Here's my list so far:

Its certainly a matter of personal taste. I've always found R.A. Salvatore ok but nothing special. I read the first five Dresden books again thinking they were ok, but nothing special and haven't bothered reading any more.

Definitely looking forward to <i>The Wise Man's Fear</i>.

I believe C.S. Friedman's [book:Legacy of Kings is due out this year and I'm really wanting to get my hands on it.

And, if I'm lucky, Scott Lynch's The Republic of Thieves will also release this year.

Because it was a fun story with enjoyable characters that kept me entertained throughout?

It wasn't some groundbreaking masterpiece of fantasy fiction. What it did do, was to take the usual fantasy tropes and polished them to a dazzling shine. At least, that's how I see it.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

Edit: Also, if you wanted an opinion on a book, it's easier to ask for it instead of simply saying "it isn't very good" and hoping to goad someone into a reply. Just saying... ;)

Well I was just trying to share my opinion. There are other books out there with fun story and enjoyable characters that are entertaining throughout the book. I am just saying that not to point you out, many have loved the book maybe for the same reasons that you have. I just have no idea why this book reach to a large amount of people like that. I just don't see it and get it is all.

I personally don't see how people love the hell out of Twilight and the like. But hey, at least they're reading something I guess.

Everyone enjoys a different flavor, I suppose. Luckily there are enough of them for everyone to find something they like.

May: The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making, by Catherynne M. Valente (this might be a reissue though)
June: Naamah's Blessing, by Jacqueline Carey
July: Nothing I know of.
August: A Reckoning of Men, by Sarah Monette and Elizabeth Bear
September: Nothing I know of.
October: Saints Astray, by Jacqueline Carey
And no titles I'm aware of for November and December, but that's far enough away that there's still hope there might be a Robin McKinley or Patricia A. McKillip title for me. ;)

And I too am looking forward to Wise Man's Fear, though I will be waiting until it's out in mass market because (a) we still have to wait for book #3 so I'm not in a huge rush; and (b) I have a mass market edition of The Name of the Wind and like my series to match. :D As to why I like it enough to put on this list, I'm with Ala: it took a fairly standard epic fantasy story and did it pretty darned well. Nothing groundbreaking, but good old fashioned fun, and Kevin, if you didn't think it was fun I don't think any of us are going to convince you otherwise, nor are you going to convince us that we didn't really enjoy it. You're allowed to not get it, but please remember that online it's very hard to read tone, so simple statements of fact have a tendency to look snide and/or snarky. Which is why I will add a winking smiley to this comment. All friends, right? ;)

The Name of the Wind was one of the best books I've ever read, period, in any genre. And I'm not going to justify that. It simply was.

That said, The Wise Man's Fear is at the top of my list.

If Lois McMaster Bujold's latest Vorkosigan book gets published in 2011 I'll be all over that ... but I suspect 2012 is more likely. Hard to say, though.

I will be impatiently waiting for A Memory of Light to be released sometime novemberish I expect and will end the Wheel of Time series. Nothing like waiting for the closure of the last book in a series especially after Jordan's death. Also the next Locke Lamora book whenever its planned to be released.

How can you say that when you can't even give a reason for it. I love the Legend of Drizzt series, especially the Crystal Shard, and I can give you many great reasons for loving the series, but especially the Crystal Shard!

Actually, I think Ala put to words quite nicely what I like about it. I would just be repeating his well thought out post on the matter and be contributing nothing new to the discussion.

That said, I don't see why you have this anti-Rothfuss agenda that makes you attack everyone that says they like that book, in every thread on GoodReads.

Since I'm no longer buying hardbacks and instead stocking up my Kindle, I don't pay as much attention to publishing dates. I do wish it was easier to keep on top of when books are coming out for authors.

So I guess for the "2011" list it's mostly what's coming out in paperback (dropping the Kindle book price) or who is finishing a series so I will start it. Wheel of Time (Jordan) and Magister (Friedman) come to mind.

The Wise Man's Fear is definitely the one I am looking forward to this year. 2010 had a plethora of new releases I was looking forward to (Cryoburn, Tad Williams, the Desert Spear, etc.), but so far this is the only one I am really excited about for 2011.

Hey, if you are looking forward to The Wise Man's Fear you should head on to the thread that I posted the fantasy book club's page on basically why you love The Name of the Wind so much to make you look forward to it. For me again, it was not a book that special to be looking forward to the next.

Was considering starting the Wheel of Time (any comments please) with so many books I'm not sure about investing so much time in one series.

Paul - World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War is awesome. There's also Feed, which is less about the dawn of the zombie apocalypse than how the survivors have adapted ~20 years later.

I usually find out about books by browsing the appropriate bookstore section, reading authors' blogs, or being alerted by my local library when an author I've flagged has something new coming out. (Or occasionally by looking at profiles on Goodreads, and frequently by serendipity.)
