Dana (piyo) | 57 comments Just finished Grave Dance, and feel like I've discovered that I don't really care for faeries. The book is the second in a series and deals mainly with witches, but faeries are present, even more so in Grave Dance. Their rules frustrate me, lol.

Not really sure what to read next. I'll have to sort through my To-Read list, or just go out and buy something (which, I really shouldn't do, but have a feeling I might, XD).

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) I've got the huge over-one-thousand-page version of Les Miserables but I am enjoying it :) I've already made a good dent in it.
Anyway, I haven't a good enough grip on Graceling to really see how good it is. But I'll tell you when I know.
Dana, I'd go for The Graveyard Book or a John Green novel (All of them are good).

message 203: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) And none of them involve fairies :)

On a side note, when did people start spelling it faerie? Confuzzling.

message 204: by Dana (new)

Dana (piyo) | 57 comments Ooo, Guitar Chick, I think The Graveyard Book is on my WishList. One of these days I'll pick it up. I haven't heard of John Green, so I'll have to take a look at his stuff.

As for the spelling of fairy vs. faerie...I have no idea if it ever changed, really. I know you can spell it either way, and at some point I saw the "e" version of the word and liked it. Started to use it and have spelled it that way ever since. I think it's just a preference thing.

message 205: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) No, I mean like, in all the paranormal romace fairy books I've seen, they spell it like faery. I just didn't know when everyone made the switch.

Haha, I think every time an author writes a "fairy" book, they try to spell it a new way.

I hate fairies. And unicorns.

message 207: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) I'm getting tired of fairies. I liked Wicked Lovely and Wondrous Strange but it stopped there. It's getting out of control.

message 208: by Karen (new)

Karen (karenhooper) | 101 comments You girls are making me giggle with the fairy/faery/faerie thing. I never know how to spell it either.

message 209: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) Sounds like it :)

message 210: by Dana (new)

Dana (piyo) | 57 comments Finally decided on The Fairy Godmother (Five Hundred Kingdoms, #1) by Mercedes Lackey . I guess since I one of the more recent books I recently read was The Snow Queen's Shadow, I'm still in a fairy tale mood.

Ha, and see, here I spelled it "fairy". I think I use both, "fairy" when I mean the tales and "faerie" when I mean the magical creature and "Faerie" when I mean the land. *shakes head* You'd think I'd just confuse myself with all the different spellings, but I suppose there is a method to my madness. Either that, or I'm just weird.

message 211: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) No, that makes sense. I just always saw it spelled fairy.

message 212: by [deleted user] (new)

I just finished Tempest Rising (Tempest #1) by Tracy Deebs

Now reading Into the Wild (Warriors Series #1) by Erin Hunter

Reading The Son of Neptune :) The Son of Neptune (Heroes of Olympus, #2) by Rick Riordan

message 214: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) I read Percy Jackson and liked it ok, but I haven't gotten around to the continuation series. But they look good, so I might have to put it on the list.
Anyway, I'm going to the bookstore today, so I'll tell you what I picked up over there :)

I think you have to have really loved the first series to enjoy this new spin off. I mean, I absolutely loved the first five, but these new ones are just okay...

message 216: by Garrett (new)

Garrett (garrettgoodreads) I read the Lightning Thief in about a day. It was really good, I couldn't stop reading it. Have you read his Egyptian mythology series, The Kane Chronicles, or something like that?

message 217: by Emily, Merfreak & Tribute (new)

Emily (emilimcg) | 251 comments Mod
No, I haven't actually. I think his books are kinda too young for me now. The only reason I'm reading the Heros of Olympus series is because I want to know what happens to the characters from the last series.

Have you read all of the first five books?

message 218: by Dana (new)

Dana (piyo) | 57 comments I just picked up a copy of The Son of Neptune today and am looking forward to reading it during my flight for vacation. I absolutely LOVE the Percy Jackson books and enjoyed the first in the Heros of Olympus series, so I'm excited for book two. I read the first in The Kane Chronicles series, and liked it, but not as much as Percy (but I attribute this to my knowing Greek mythology a little better than Egyptian).

No, just the first. It was good, but when I finished, I wasn't like, "OMG, I have to go get the sequel NOW!" It was good, but not good enough where I had to get the next book. My favorite Greek mythology-based series is Daughters of the Moon by Lynne Ewing. Even though I first read them in middle school six years ago, they're still the books I keep turning back to. They get me so inspired when I read them - I could have the biggest case of writer's block and it'd cure it instantly. I've probably reread them more than any other series. In fact, I now have doubles of some of the books, I've read them so much!

message 220: by Dana (new)

Dana (piyo) | 57 comments My sister grew up on The Daughters of the Moon series, and I think it got her into reading. Which I find funny, because her future stepdaughter isn't a fan of reading, but when my sister gaver her those books to try, she's hooked! I'm surprised my sister never passed them to me to read when we were younger.

I love them! They were probably my first try at fantasy. Reading them for me is like catching up with old friends. And each time I read them, I find something new I didn't notice the first time. For example, there's a character who appears in the later novels, who it turns out was in the second book, only her name was never given. Then it's confirmed in the fifth book that it was the same character. I was like, "Huh! How had I never caught that?"

message 222: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) That's how I feel with Harry Potter, Garrett :)

There's just that feeling of kicking back and realxing with friends when I pick one of them up. I'm closer to my Harry Potter books more than I am with most of the kids at church and school.

message 223: by Maija (new)

Maija Barnett (maija_barnett) | 10 comments I just finished reading The Water Mirror. It was a fantastic read! Though the book's central character is not a mermaid, there are plenty of mermaids to go around. Plus there's monsters, magic, and intrigue to boot. The book is part of a trilogy, and I'm planning on reading the rest as well. I just put a review up on my blog, so check it out if you're interested. It's at http://maijabarnett.blogspot.com/

message 224: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) I've been looking at those books every now and then. They look pretty interesting.... maybe someday.

Garrett (garrettgoodreads) I bought this today in the Last Chance Bargain-Priced pile: Many Bloody Returns by Charlaine Harris I bought it because it has a story featuring my girl Sookie! But while waiting in line, I realized I've already read the Sookie story featured inside it. Sigh...oh, well, there are lots of other vampire goodies inside. And plus, the book is dedicated to Joss Whedon, the phenomenonally talented creator behind Buffy.

message 230: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) Sookie always overwhelmed me because there were like ten bajillion books and I didn't know where to start and I kind of just was done with vampire romances, but I might pick them up sooner or later. It comes down to book priorities I guess.

message 231: by Garrett (new)

Garrett (garrettgoodreads) I love the books, they're definitely my favorite vampire books. Plus, there are so many other supernatural creatures, that you don't get bored with all the vampires, because something new is just lurking around the corner. And I wouldn't worry about the romance. Other than the occasional sex scene, the books don't really have gushy romance or anything like that. They're more like murder mysteries with supernaturals thrown in as well as romance. :)

message 232: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) Well, ok then. I might check them out at the library. They're always out though. But I'm currently reading the Great Gatsby down. Trying to do some classic reading this year.

Ooh, that one's good! I read it a few years ago, and I remember that I couldn't put it down. It was incredibly addicting. I believe there's a sequel or two as well. :)

message 234: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) I'm currently reading Burton on Burton: Revised Edition because well.......it's almost Halloween and I totally love Tim Burton.

message 235: by Garrett (new)

Garrett (garrettgoodreads) I'm currently reading The Witching Hour (Lives of the Mayfair Witches, #1) by Anne Rice It was difficult to get into, but it's getting good. I love how all these different characters and stories are being intertwined. And also since Halloween's coming up, it's a pretty creepy book to curl up with. I just hope I can finish it, it's over 1000 pages.

I've never read any Anne Rice. I'll save it for later. But I've heard she can write a kick-ass vampire book.

I've read most of Queen of the Damned, and it was pretty kick-ass! I don't know why I didn't finish it, but I need to continue it. Interview with the Vampire was just plain torture for me to finish. I think it's the way it was written, how it's one long story without chapters and how the words seem crammed together on one page. It hurts my eyes to stare at the pages for too long. Still, though, she can write, especially when it comes to describing things.

message 238: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) Sweet :) Vampires have to be done just so for me. They're a bit hard sometimes.

message 239: by Garrett (new)

Garrett (garrettgoodreads) Reading Tangled Tides (The Sea Monster Memoirs, #1) by Karen Amanda Hooper . What can I say? My eyes have been glued to my computer screen almost since I got the ebook. And when I'm not reading it, I'm thinking about it. That should describe my feelings for this book. :)

message 240: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) Fantastic! I'm looking forward to Tangled Tides so much it hurts.
However I just finished A Certain Slant of Light and it enjoyed it well enough. The characters and plot became a little annoying after a while, but it was fun.

And then more recently I've finished White Cat and I liked that much more. It's my favorite Holly Black book.

Next up is The Water Mirror

The Blue Girl is one of my favorite fantasy reads ever. It's just so fun, but with a little brain good. Just enough to give you something to think on.

Sweet! Yeah, I remembered you and Olivia talking about how good it was, and I'd remembered seeing it in the school library, so I looked it up and knew I had to read it. The book that supposedly started the urban fantasy genre has to be read, especially being that it's my favorite genre.
