Shay | 923 comments When I read overhyped or overadvertised books and end up hating them, I tend to get really angry about that. Like I've been manipulated, somehow, into wasting my time and reading it and I'll end up writing a particularly scathing and nasty review. Or everytime someone mentions the book, I'll just get that urge to wave them off it.

Definitely. I feel ripped off. Like I just read The Scorpio Races which was super hyped and super advertised, so I ran off to get the book. But I really didn't like the book, I couldn't see at all why people were raving about the book. And I was really excited about reading it too. But when it turned out bad, then I felt like I wasted my energy and time. It's just terrible.

Lacey | 61 comments Finished Allegiance (Legacy, #2) by Cayla Kluver Which was past my expectations, it has definately become a favorite of mine. But now I'm reading Halflings (Halflings #1) by Heather Burch which is also good so far but I'm only a couple chapters in so we'll see how good the rest of the book is :)

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments The Lost Dogs Michael Vick's Dogs and Their Tale of Rescue and Redemption by Jim Gorant .Just finished The Lost Dogs: Michael Vick's Dogs and Their Tale of Rescue and Redemption. Listening to the descriptions of how the dogs were treated made me cringe. So horrible! And i don't even like dogs. Although it was great to see that there were organizations and people so willing to try to change the lives of the dogs that had once been so horribly. I'm glad I picked this book up. It wasn't one of my usual types of reads, but I picked it up because it was on the list for the goodreads 2010 awards challenge.

Goodness, that happens to me all the time! Whenever I click on one book and add it to my TBR, I usually end up with at least 5 more.

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments Anna Dressed in Blood (Anna, #1) by Kendare Blake Just finished this one. I loved it! I was worried that the book wouldn't live up to all the hype but I was pleasantly surprised.

Acadia, Book I The Lost King and the Goddess of Time (The Second Great War Trilogy) by Ali Naqvi Started this one. So far I'm a bit bored. There's something about a war and a lot of different names. Here's to hoping it gets better.

message 513: by Laura (new)

Laura I'm reading the Rogue Hunter by Lynsay Sands and Hot Ice by Cherry Adair.

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments I attacked the poetry portion of the 2010 goodreads awards:
If There is Something to Desire One Hundred Poems by Vera Pavlova - some of the poems made me laugh and I'm pretty sure they weren't supposed to. I don't know if I'm much of a poetry fan...

Newspaper Blackout by Austin Kleon - Cool idea. Funny how boredom can spawn inspiration.

Come on All You Ghosts by Matthew Zapruder - Just started this one today. I still don't think I fully get this poetry thing, but you can't say I didn't try it out.

message 517: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Just finished Sophie & Carter by Chelsea Fine and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this book. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I'm deducting a star because it was so short. Who would have thought?

My 'review' if you guys are interested.

message 518: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) I just finished The Closers The Closers (Harry Bosch, #11) by Michael Connelly and am three plays into Complete Plays of John Galsworthy Complete Plays of John Galsworthy by John Galsworthy . He's one of my favorite authors and fortunately, he wrote a lot!

message 519: by Samantha (new)

Samantha Mullins (hixxup79) finished reading Heat Stroke (Weather Warden, #2) by Rachel Caine now going to read The Accidental Vampire (Argeneau, #7) by Lynsay Sands

Lacey | 61 comments Now reading The Last Seal by Richard Denning and it's really interesting thus far, action right from the very first page, LoL.

message 521: by Sashana (new)

Sashana How was Heat Stroke, Sammie?

message 522: by Samantha (new)

Samantha Mullins (hixxup79) Heat Stroke was really good, I started it and once I got a few pages in I got hooked and couldn't put it down so I finished it quickly.

finished The Accidental Vampire (Argeneau, #7) by Lynsay Sands and now onto Touch of Darkness (Darkness Chosen, #2) by Christina Dodd

Kellyflower | 248 comments Loving all the 80s references in Ready Player One by Ernest Cline .
I'm also reading my first Jennifer Crusie book Bet Me by Jennifer Crusie

message 524: by Sashana (new)

Sashana How's Bet Me going? I love Jennifer Crusie, she's a favorite of mine.

message 525: by Jex (new)

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments One Day by David Nicholls Not terrible so far. Only 3 chapters in so interested to see where it goes.

Unbearable Lightness A Story of Loss and Gain by Portia de Rossi Listening to this on audiobook. Fascinating story so far about Portia de Rossi and her eating disorders. I love that she narrates it herself so you really get the emotion behind the words.

Come on All You Ghosts by Matthew Zapruder Need to just read this and get it over with and never try poetry again :-P

Acadia, Book I The Lost King and the Goddess of Time (The Second Great War Trilogy) by Ali Naqvi Reading this on my kindle. I got a copy from the author to review and put it off for a long time. I'm not terribly far into it and don't yet know what to think.

message 526: by Sashana (new)

lol I know how you feel, trust me. In my senor year of high school I took AP English and we only analyzed poetry. It was horrible.

message 527: by Shadow Jubilee (new)

Shadow Jubilee (uhqs) Currently reading The Emperor's Wolf by J.C. Owens, dark erotic short novel. Not enjoying it so far. Actually, I want to skip to the end and then stop reading. (lol) But I will persevere.

@Jex: I remember I used to think I loved poetry (when I was very young). They were quick and easy to read. Then I discovered poetry that didn't rhyme, was long and convoluted, and sometimes just plain didn't make sense and I realized I was fooling myself. :P But in hopes of reading more poetry, I bought a book of poems by e.e. cummings. Have you read any of those?

message 528: by Jex (new)

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments @niq I haven't read any. Really I only picked up these poetry books because they were the goodreads award winners for 2010. Thought I'd give them a try.

message 529: by Shadow Jubilee (new)

Hope you enjoy it. :)

I started and finished Ready Player One yesterday. One of the best books of the year. I thought it was going to be mostly about video games, so I wasn't interested until I read about it and discovered it's also an 80's nostalgia fest. Then I wanted to read it.

Stefani Robinson (steffiebaby140) | 807 comments The Healer's Apprentice by Melanie Dickerson

About halfway through this, got an ARC from first reads. So far I am liking it a lot, I find it very easy to sink into the story and keep interested in it. It seems to be an easy ready since I've gotten over 100 pages in just an hour or so of reading time, but a good read.

message 532: by Samantha (new)

Samantha Mullins (hixxup79) I'm still reading Touch of Darkness (Darkness Chosen, #2) by Christina Dodd it's a good book, but I just haven't had time to read that much right now. It's finals at school so I've been busy with those. UGH! and it's taking me forever to get my essay and other stuff done so it's all completed by the 18th. But then I will be on break and get to read until I get sick of reading lol.

Shay I'm loving this book. I just wish I had more time to read it! I'm currently on a part where they were saying "Answer the question, Claire" a lot, so now I keep saying it. = ) Man I loved Breakfast club. I think it's the growing up in the 80's that's making this book so good. All the things in this book were in my childhood! I cracked up when they brought up Thundar the Barbarian lol.

Aleksandra (spalkiry) I'm reading Shogun, A Game of Thrones and 1984 - pretty much depending on whether I'm at home, in the public transport or at work.
Shogun started quite interestingly for me. I've heard that the first volume is not as exciting as the second one, so I'm really looking forward to getting to it.
As for GoT... I think the TV series kind of ruined it for me. It's quite a pity, because I used to love the books. I'm still rereading them though because the fifth one is waiting for me to discover it under the Christmas tree ;).
1984 is... well, not my thing. I don't like dystopian stuff, whether books, nor movies, but as far as at least the "classics" of the books are concerned, I think one should have an idea what they are about. So. I'm educating myself. And I think it's actually interesting. I'm not going to love it, but I think I'll like it after all :).

message 536: by Sashana (new)

Sashana I just finished The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater and I'm surprised by how much I liked it. I've never finished a book by Maggie Stiefvater before because I couldn't stomach her writing style but I gave this one 3 stars.

Yesterday I started Perfect (Pretty Little Liars, #3) by Sara Shepard and I'm still reading it. I prefer the TV show much more than I do the books.

I feel like I'm the only one who didn't love it! I felt that it was an OK book, but nothing really happens and the climax of the book was over in a blink of an eye. But I'm glad that you enjoyed it!

Right now, I'm reading Crossed (Matched, #2) by Ally Condie . I liked Matched, but wasn't a super big fan of it. I like Crossed right now, even though the characters are frustrating me. I hope it gets better!

message 538: by Sashana (new)

Sashana I didn't love it per say but I'm surprised that I liked it enought to give it 3 stars because I didn't like Shiver or Lament.

I think the problem I'm having with the PLL books is that the initial shock factor is taken away because I've seen the show. I'll try to finish the series though.

message 540: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Just finished Catching Jordan by Miranda Kenneally and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. The dialogue between the teenagers was very realistic as well as the romance. It does have a lot of swearing and in some instances talks about casual sex so I think this book is for older teens.

message 541: by Shadow Jubilee (new)

Shadow Jubilee (uhqs) I'm listening to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Live in Concert. I had borrowed it from the library. I'm enjoying it. The author did the partial readings, and he is quite a performer. I wish that he had done the audiobooks for this series. I'd buy those. :)

message 542: by Samantha (new)

Samantha Mullins (hixxup79) about 3/4 of the way through Changeless (Parasol Protectorate, #2) by Gail Carriger I can't wait until school is over so I have more time to read

message 543: by Stefani (new)

Stefani Robinson (steffiebaby140) | 807 comments I'm halfway through The Halo Effect (Butterfield Institute, #1) by M.J. Rose . So far the story is good but the writing is irritating me. Every few chapters the author switches POV. We started out third person, then switched to first person, then back, then back again, and now back again. I find it annoying and lazy writing, choose one POV and stick to it!

message 544: by Kellyflower (new)

Kellyflower | 248 comments I'm trying to continue through Underdogs (Wolfe Brothers, #1-3) by Markus Zusak , but the first book in it was disappointing.
I'm trying to pace myself and not read Killbox (Sirantha Jax, #4) by Ann Aguirre so fast. But it's so hard not to read these books fast! I have one more book in this series and then I have to wait until Sept 2012 for the next book = (
I started The Seaside Letters (Nantucket, #3) by Denise Hunter and I'm not sure it's gonna hold my interest.
Ok and one last book - Played by Dana Davidson . I'm not sure I'll finish this one either.

message 545: by Mercè (new)

Mercè (maidcc) I'm reading Linger (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #2) by Maggie Stiefvater , actually rereading it. I find it funny and easy. I love Sam because he's a normal boy, nothing incredible. A boy who has his fears and a hard past.

I can't wait to read Forever (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #3) by Maggie Stiefvater ! I know I going to like it. The question is if there's gonna be a good end to the whole story.

message 546: by Samantha (new)

Samantha Mullins (hixxup79) I finished Changeless (Parasol Protectorate, #2) by Gail Carriger and immediately picked up Blameless (The Parasol Protectorate, #3) by Gail Carriger

message 547: by Kristina (new)

Kristina (kristinalawhead) I just finished Ruthless (Pretty Little Liars, #10) by Sara Shepard and it was good, not my favorite in the series though. I'm also 1/3 way through These Things Hidden by Heather Gudenkauf and I'm not that impressed. I may read a little more then skim the rest if it doesn't grab my attention

message 548: by Sashana (new)

message 550: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) Just finished Swan Peak Swan Peak (Dave Robicheaux, #17) by James Lee Burke . Good book but a weirdness-- in every single other book with this protagonist he's mentioned his family-- his first wife, his second wife, and his daughter all figure prominently, if only in memory in some cases. He doesn't mention them at all, not even once, in this book. Now-- I'm about five books behind in this series (and this is the sixth book I was behind so yeah, I read it way out of order) but I'm now dying to get caught up to see what could so completely have changed!
