A Little Magic

Sashana Thanks Kelly and Jex! I didn't even think to click on the cover anyway.

Dnelson Ellie wrote: "I'm just about to start A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. I want to read more classics in 2012."

I haven't read it since I had to in school, but its the one book that sticks with me. Learned a lot by reading it. Probably should re-read it and see what an "adult" prospective would reveal.

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments Sashana- The Host wasn't bad once I got into it. I found it a little slow at first.

I couldn't put the Host down.

message 607: by Krystal (new)

Krystal (crazylittlebookpage) I am reading Splitting Harriet by Tamara Leigh and so far I'm enjoying it.

message 608: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I started on The Weight of Silence by Heather Gudenkauf last night. I'm a few chapters into it so far and its a bit of a page turner.

message 609: by Krystal (new)

Krystal (crazylittlebookpage) Now I'm reading The Wedding by Nicholas Sparks and I'm loving this book. It's been a hard book to put down

message 610: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I just started reading the second book in the Stephanie Plum series Two for the Dough.

Laura (lglovett) | 1444 comments Ellie wrote: "I just started reading the second book in the Stephanie Plum series Two for the Dough."

I really wanted to reread that series before the movie but I don't want to pay for a copy and my library wait list is really long.

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments Finished
A Little Magic by Valerie Gillen - I wasn't terribly impressed, but I think the book was made more for middle schoolers which is probably why I didn't like it. I felt the plot was forced and the author was obsessed with the word "bitch" which I found strange for a YA book. I also found random swear words/inappropriate words scattered in the text that had nothing to do with the story. Almost like someone was screwing around with the text and then they didn't get edited out. I only noticed it a couple times, but still...annoying...

Currently Reading:
The Man of My Dreams by Gladys Quintal - I don't know what to say abut this one. The sex scenes feel like a 12 year wrote them and it constantly flip flops between a story of a woman's sexy dreams and a rapist preparing for attack. I'm guessing the stories align and make more sense at one point, but I'm not there yet.

The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1) by Suzanne Collins - I got my hands on the audiobooks for this series and thought I'd have a listen since the move comes out next month. Only on chapter 2 and already almost cried. Yea...I'm a wuss...

Starting Soon:
Deadline (Newsflesh Trilogy, #2) by Mira Grant - Just picked this up from the library and am stoked to start reading it!

message 613: by Sashana (new)

Sashana The good thing about The Hunger Games is that each book gets better -- a rarity for series. Do the [HG] books have a long waiting list at your library, Jex?

message 614: by Krystal (new)

Krystal (crazylittlebookpage) I'm now reading Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and so far it's kind of weird because it's all over the place.

I had it checked out but I couldn't get past the first chapter.

message 616: by Laura (new)

Laura (lglovett) | 1444 comments I want to read that one too, Krystal. Let me know how it turns out.

I am currently reading

Clockwork Prince (The Infernal Devices, #2) by Cassandra Clare , which is so far really good.

Don't Kill the Birthday Girl Tales from an Allergic Life by Sandra Beasley which is very enlightening. I had no idea that food allergies were such a controversial topic. I am learning a lot from this book.

message 617: by Jex (new)

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments @Sashana - I don't know about the books (I own those) but the audiobooks took me a good month in a half to get. They are the MP3 ones through overdrive and not CD though, so might have been able to get those faster.

I am on the second chapter now and it's still extremely weird, I don't know that I'll be able to finish it but I am going to try.

Laura (lglovett) | 1444 comments I am currently reading The Bungalow by Sarah Jio

I am only 23 pages in but already I am roped in and can't seem to put it down> I am guessing today is going to be a reading day.

Is Under the Never Sky any good? I've read a few of the most recently hyped books and been disappointed. Yay, library... at least they were free.

message 628: by Sashana (new)

Sashana My library needs to get it together. Our YA catalog is really lacking in new releases. I don't understand it, I live in a major US city; it's ridiculous really.

message 629: by Shadow Jubilee (new)

Shadow Jubilee (uhqs) Just a few books I've been working on for a few weeks (or in one case, over a month) now:

The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1) by Suzanne Collins started early/mid January. Still only at 18%. Can't seem to muster up enough enthusiasm to read for more than a few pages at a time.

Prophecy Child of Earth (Symphony of Ages, #2) by Elizabeth Haydon Faltered at 37% so I skimmed ahead *sheepish*

The Secret History of the Pink Carnation (Pink Carnation, #1) by Lauren Willig Started it a couple of days ago

Do they have a suggestion button? I actually asked my library to buy more paperback cozies and they did. I also ask for specific books. If enough people ask, they do go and buy them.

message 631: by Sashana (new)

Sashana I'll have to ask them tomorrow, Shay. I've never seen a suggestion button on their website.

message 632: by Laura (new)

Laura (lglovett) | 1444 comments Just finished The Bungalow by Sarah Jio . I highly recommend it to anyone looking for romance set in WWII with a little bit of mystery tied in. I am giving it 5 stars and I am so reading her other books.

Also starting State of Wonder by Ann Patchett .

message 633: by Shay (new)

Shay | 923 comments Sashana wrote: "I'll have to ask them tomorrow, Shay. I've never seen a suggestion button on their website."

Ours is really, really well hidden. I think I found it in the FAQ section. Something like "What if a book I want isn't in the catalog?" It goes into ILL, with link, and request the library purchase the book, with link. And that's the only place in the whole website I found the link to request they buy a book.

message 634: by Sashana (new)

Sashana I found it! Thanks, Shay :) They hid it away in the FAQ section like you said (why would they do that?). I'm going to suggest like crazy when I get the chance to. While searching through the FAQ I also found out that I can check out 50 items instead of the previously thought 30. Booyah!

Why would both of our libraries do it? I wonder if there's some company that sells pre-built websites for libraries. That's a really odd coincidence.

I just finished that last night, Laura - loved it. It will be interesting to hear what you think. Also bumped into The Bungalow somewhere and thought it looked good - glad to have the good review.

message 637: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Could be. Maybe they're trying to cut back suggestions because of tight budgets so they hide it away? I'm going to see if we have a feedback section because I think it should be more visible for everyone.

Chapter 4, I don't think I'll be watching the movie. If I didn't like the book I don't tend to watch the movies. I'm starting Camouflaged Killer: The Shocking Double Life of Canadian Air Force Colonel Russell Williams now since I just finished Don't Breathe a Word

Mine is the same way. but my librarians love me so I didn't have to search for it they actually pulled everything up and requested a purchase for me = )

I'm really liking Under the Never Sky.
I'm not done yet , I have about 79 pages left. I'm glad it's gonna be a trilogy, because I don't think she could answer all my question and wrap everything up in one book.
It did take me about 60 pages or so for me to really get into the story.

message 640: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments My library has it on the front page too. A nice feature, but I've never had to use it.

Natasha, where do you live? My county (Tarrant [Fort Worth, TX] County) does the same thing. I can also get books from Saginaw, Burleson, Benbrook...just to name a few!

message 641: by Laura (new)

Laura (lglovett) | 1444 comments I have a large library system as well. I live in Montgomery(Conroe, TX) County and our library has 10 branches but it still takes forever if you are on hold for a book, no matter the number of copies there may be.

message 642: by Shay (new)

Shay | 923 comments Our library system has 25 branches and has full access to two other library systems. We can even see the other library system's whole collection online, status of books, etc. I miss the old days, when there was money and they would buy 300-400 copies of popular new release books.

Stefani Robinson (steffiebaby140) | 807 comments Patient Zero (Joe Ledger, #1) by Jonathan Maberry - So far I am really loving it. It's typical zombie stuff as far as the monsters go, but making them an implement of terrorists is interesting. I am liking it enough that I went out and bought another one from this author last night.

That's good to know, Rot & Ruin is the one I bought last night! I was looking for another of the Joe Ledger's but they didn't have any others. I have a feeling all of his books are ending up on my shelf soon lol

Conroe, huh? Have you ever been to Freebird's? One just opened down there a week or two ago. Really good burritos. I worked there for four years before I quit to go to school. Best and funnest job I have ever had!

message 647: by Laura (new)

Laura (lglovett) | 1444 comments I didn't realize it was open. I knew they were putting one in because I live five minutes away. I have been to several all over the state of Texas. I lived in Austin for 1 1/2 years and then I moved to San Antonio for 3 years before moving back home to the Houston area. They are really delicious. I have a cousin that lives in Frisco and there are some really good eats up in the Dallas area too.

Yes ma'am. They are open! mhy boyfriend still works for the 'Bird (which is also where we met SIX years ago) so I still get the inside scoop on everything. I would love to live in Austin one day. We are slowly working towards that goal. Every time I visit I fall more in love with that city. Dallas does have wonderful places to eat. If I had the money I would be eating out breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
