2011 BYO New Year's Resolutions Challenge
We can do it, Dina! I have faith in those of us who are in this endeavor together! And you can make an up-datable NYR, too. Decide on certain books you want to read in 2011.
UM, there are many books I want to read in 2011, but I'll try not to change the NYR I set. After all, my no-buying-books resolution will be over in 6 months and I have tons of books on my TBR to keep me entertained during that time. All hell will break loose on July 1st, though. :D

Ah, I see! That's interesting, UM. Let me check my TBR and see which books I must read next year. I'll probably be conservative and choose only one must-read book per month. :D

You've got your hands full with the one you are doing! LOL
Dhestiny's 2011 New Year's Resolution ChallengeI will buy no new books except - those that are part of a series I am already reading, or a spin-off of a series I'm already reading.
Exceptions - During the month of April, my birthday month, I can buy up to 10 new books.
AND -I'll spend at least 1 hour per month (or until completed) organizing my Goodreads shelves.
January - 0/1 Hour
February - 0/1 Hour
March - 0/1 Hour
April - 0/1 Hour
May - 0/1 Hour
June - 0/1 Hour
July - 0/1 Hour
August - 0/1 Hour
September - 0/1 Hour
October - 0/1 Hour
November - 0/1 Hour
December - 0/1 Hour
My New Year's Resolution Challenge is to buy no more than 1 book a month for the entire year. Except for in April (my birthday month) I can buy as many as I want. I make no other commitments. And good luck to all who are making resolutions! I know you can do it!!!!!!!
Bekah wrote: "what made you decide on 10 dhes?"Trying to be strong. LOL
But it's not January 1st yet. And this one can be altered.
**twitch, twitch**
i was just wondering why 10 was the magic number...i still havent decided what my magic number for march is...

I plan to read a total of 200 books for the year, and follow my guidelines from my 2011 self-challenge which is to limit my book buying, use the library more often, read at least 1 Lisa Kleypas book a month, and finish some of the series I have started. Holy CRAP, hope I can keep all my rules right:)
1.
0/200
My challenge is similar to Becky's. I plan to read at least 200 books. Read all the Lisa Kleypas books I haven't read yet & finish or catch up with most of the series I've started. I say "most", because I doubt that I'll get through all of J.D. Robb's In Death series! ;)
Half of my out-of-town company left last night, so I can start thinking about setting up challenges. Will post later - probably on New Year's
I love creative accounting when it comes to books, Judy. My NYR is twofold -1. I can't buy (spend money) any new books unless they are part of a series I'm already following, or a spin off of a series I'm already following, except in April which is my birthday month, and I can buy 10 books.
2. I'll spend at least 1 hour per month (until completed) organizing my Goodreads book shelves.
So to help with #1, I'm thinking of buying myself some gift cards to various bookstores before the 1st. LOL
And as for #2, I just need to get it done!

I got the idea from someone else. Does that make a difference?

Bekah wrote: "No! it totally defeats the whole purpose!!!"Well... what about gift cards I got from friends for Chrismtas? Surely you can't expect me to wait a whole year to spend those??????
Bekah wrote: "hmmmmaybe you should save those for your bday month????

I smell cold feet!"
That's a great idea, Bekah!!!!
Pamela(AllHoney) wrote: "How about pre-ordering Dhes? Is that considered cheating?"No, it's not cheating. And since I can buy books that are part of any series I'm following, I don't need to worry about those at all.
I'm just SURE that some author will come out with something wonderful that I simply MUST have and won't be able to buy. **sigh**

Lady Danielle "The Book Huntress" wrote: "D, if that happens, just drop a lot of hints to your daughters. :)"True, that!!! LOL
You'll see my status update bemoaning my state of despair, begging people to send me books! LOL
I got a pretty big package from thriftbooks.com over last week and my daughter looked at it, her eyes went wide and she said, "Mom! That's not ok!" LOLOL
Is it too late say count me in? If not then here's my Resolution(s) 1. Decrease the number of books on my Unfinished Shelf, try to finish at least one per month.
2. Only buy books that are part of a Series I've already started or have been written by a Fave Author.

Hey, I don't blame you, Dhestiny. I am still in awe of you and Dina, commiting to not buying any books so long. I couldn't do it!

Help me stay off book buying. Send me your phone number so I can call you in the middle of the night when I'm about to cave.
Better yet, just send your credit card information. That way, technically it's YOU buying the books! ;)

Umm, you'd be pretty disappointed at how far my credit card takes you right now. But feel free to call me if you need an intervention!

Took the last of our out-of-town company to the airport early this morning (up at 5:00 a.m. just like Christmas morn!), so I've finally developed my New Year's Resolution about reading & buying. 1. My main resolution is that I will not guilt myself about buying books! I do want to decrease the size of my TBR shelves, though, so I've reached the following compromise:
For each 5 books I read from my TBRs, I can buy up to 4 books. I won't always buy, but I retain the option.
2. I will read at least 6 books from each of the following categories:
a. Georgette Heyer books
b. My Lifetime of Books list (I have 12 still to read, so I might finish it a year early)
c. Old TBR (books I've had for more than a year)
d. Mid-TBR (books I've had for 6 months to a year)
e. New TBR (books I've had for less than 6 months)
So that's a total of 30 books in my challenge

Ooh- another Heyer fan. Both my mum and I have read these many times over the years and then when she became ill I bought the whole set to share with her.
I have never heard of Heyer until about a month ago on another thread, and now I hear of her all the time and how great she is. Must mean I have to try one of her books!!
Becky wrote: "I have never heard of Heyer until about a month ago on another thread, and now I hear of her all the time and how great she is. Must mean I have to try one of her books!!"Ye-es. Please remember that she started writing about 90 years ago so her style is very different from a lot of modern authors. Very funny though.
Some of her classic romances are:

"I recommended that one because it is hilarious. The romance is pretty subtle. It is a real comedy of errors- and Heyer ties up all the plot ends so beautifully. I wish modern authors would plot more tidily! It is also beautifully written and very evocative of the time- she was a superb researcher and makes some of the "Regency" authors that we enjoy now look shocking on the historical aspects.
By the way there is a GoodReads Heyer group if anyone would like to join. Her romances are very much of the single kiss on the last page variety just so everyone's expectations are in the right place!

I will buy no books. No exceptions allowed, no matter how much I whine and cry.
That's it! Good luck to me!
Note: Considering the nature of my challenge, I won't be posting any updates here until the end date of the challenge - unless I break my NYR before then. :(
