If we had criminals put into slavery in which they would pick the beans, it would be totally constitutional. The constitution, contrary to believe, does not outlaw slavery altogether.

And Baxter: You love loopholes, don't you? :)

You can still give your opinions. :) You may not get answers right away because it's Christmastime though.

I think "Happy Holidays" is taken the wrong way. Mabe, just MAYBE, when people say "Happy Holidays" they mean "Happy Christmas and New Years". There are MULTIPLE holidays that are celibrated during this time of year, usually by the same people. Not everyone censors their "Merry Christmas"s because they worry they'll offend someone. There are other reasons. Does that make sense?

And frankly, it's nice that people are trying to mix it up a little. That way, we're not all saying "Merry Christmas" to each other and nothing else.

Slave labor, no. We could all survive with a little less chocolate if need be. It's not like people will starve without Hershey's. If it's actually their job and they are getting paid at least minimum wage, why not?

I'm a bit late, but...

I don't celebrate Christmas, but everyone wishes me a Merry Christmas throughout the month of December. It doesn't bother me at all. I wish them a Merry Christmas in return. I don't know why people would get mad. Like Jayda said, it's not a negative thing, it's more like trying to be polite.

I agree with you. I support it too. I feel that because the government is corrupt right now, they aren't telling us everything. The people should know these things though, and that's why I support it.

If the government has stuff they want to hide to prevent people from being hurt, they should do a better job with the hiding. Honestly, Wikileaks isn't doing any OH SNAP UBER GOD HACKERS stuff, just very basic social engineering. This is stuff low ranking soldiers have access to.

message 166: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Harmon (mandyharmon) | 10724 comments Mmmhmm! Something you should really research. It's good to know the news and history of our country. (Not that wikileaks is history, I'm just commenting).

Wikileaks was/is a website that publishes anonymous submissions and leaks of sensitive governmental, corporate, organizational, or religious documents, while attempting to preserve the anonymity and untraceability of its contributors....

Yes, I am too lazy to type that up myself, so I copied it.

Maria [the clockwork creeps on useless lives] (mariachhile) | 8772 comments Mod
I don't know either...

Hm. What do you think about... letting kids choose their own religion?

I had an argument about that with my FACS teacher.

message 171: by [deleted user] (last edited Jan 17, 2011 01:41PM) (new)

I feel like it's a no-brainer. I know it's hard for parents when their children go on a different path than they expected, but there are some situations where kids have the total right make their own choices--possibly leading to their own mistakes and learning experiences. Forcing someone to believe something doesn't work, because they know they're being forced. Take that quote from Inception, for example:

Arthur: "Okay, this is me, planting an idea in your mind. I say: don't think about elephants. What are you thinking about?"
Saito: "Elephants?"
Arthur: "Right, but it's not your idea. The dreamer can always remember the genesis of the idea. True inspiration is impossible to fake."

If someone wants to teach their child a bit of your religion to see how they feel about it, that's great, but choosing it for them is against the first amendment and downright controlling.

message 172: by Elliott (new)

Elliott | 22634 comments Mod
I think you should try to raise your kid with your values and beliefs, and take them to church and everything, but once they're old enough, it's their choice what they want to be. I think when my kids reach high school age, they're going to be allowed to go to whatever church they want, or not go to church at all. Because I hate it when parents force their religion on kids.

Maria [the clockwork creeps on useless lives] (mariachhile) | 8772 comments Mod
I hate it too.

I think that kids should be able to chose their own religion at any time, but parents can try to guide them. If they randomly wake up one day and say that they are now... I am blanking out on religions. Let's just say they now truly believe in Catholicism. I don't believe that's a bad thing, but I think it's important that the parent's guide them and expose them to all the parts of the Catholic culture so they are not believing in something they don't really believe in.

That's a good way to put it. I think parental guidance can be very helpful with stuff like religion because they really do have much more experience than us.

message 179: by [deleted user] (new)

I have a controversial topic! I stumbled upon some articles about it yesterday, and they got my brain spinning a little. I want to see what you guys think, since it's a pretty touchy and easily debatable subject.

Suicide. Is it a right? Should it really be considered a crime? Et cetera.

message 180: by Elliott (new)

Elliott | 22634 comments Mod
Well... if you're dead, how can you be punished for it? How could it be a crime?

message 181: by [deleted user] (new)

It's not like you go to jail for it, but that stigma is attached to suicide anyway. Technically, it is taking a human life, regardless of the fact that it's your own.

Then there's assisted suicide, which makes it more complicated...

Assisted suicide is really complicated. I don't even know how I feel about that.

message 184: by [deleted user] (last edited Jan 18, 2011 12:17PM) (new)

I don't either. Personally, I would never help any of my friends commit suicide. Still. It could easily be considered murder, and I understand where that comes from. On the other hand, though, you helped them kill themselves with their consent. But should their consent be taken seriously? Depression is actually a mental illness, so a person's brain isn't operating correctly when he/she contemplates or commits suicide.

message 185: by Elliott (new)

Elliott | 22634 comments Mod
I would never do it and I think that helping kill a depressed person would be wrong. But what about someone with cancer who's in a ton of pain and life isn't even worth living for them?

message 186: by [deleted user] (new)

That's the thing. Depression isn't manifested in a tumor or wound, but it's extremely painful. It can physically hurt, and it sucks the passion and happiness out of life until it doesn't feel worth living either. It's incredibly frightening to look at your life and not realize what you're living for anymore.

But with cancer, the patient's brain is usually still working well, so they can make a slightly more informed decision. Except that terminal illnesses can lead to depression or suicidal thoughts, putting them in a similar situation to someone with depression. It's all extremely twisted.

I hope I don't make it sound like cancer isn't painful, because I know that's bull. Cancer is terrible, too. I'm just thinking through both sides of the argument.

I'm posting here more often than I thought I would.

Here's a controversial topic for all of you: Guns.

Do you think kids should be educated about gun safety if their parents own a concealed weapon? Or do they not have good enough judgment to know about the gun and still stay away from it? How should parents handle guns when they have children?

message 188: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa I also have a question:

When you think of the word "cheerleader" do you think of sluts?

message 189: by [deleted user] (new)

Not completely, because my sister was a cheerleader in high school and she's the farthest thing from a slut. But a lot of cheerleaders I know also happen to be rather slutty.

I think it's a matter of the parents educating the kids on guns and safety around them. My parents own a gun and they've taught both my sister and myself about gun safety and how to handle a gun. In fact, I want to go to a shooting range at some point so I can know how to properly handle a gun. The parents should always keep a gun locked up, even if the gun is locked up next to the bed in case someone were to break in. Guns should be carefully handled, and children should be educated about them.

It really depends on how deep you go into the topic, how often the parents use the weapon, how old the kids are, etc.

Naaah, I think guns should just be banned. It'd never happen, but I think it'd be radsauce.

This isn't a controversial topic at all, but I was just curious about the opinions of people here and didn't feel like making a new topic: Do you all think of video games as an art form?

message 195: by [deleted user] (new)

You mean playing them or designing them? Designing, of course yes. Playing, not really, but I'm sure there are people who play video games very artistically.

Well...I mean the product in general. Like how one goes about appreciating a painting as a piece of art.

message 197: by [deleted user] (new)

I think they could be considered an art form. If animated films count as art, why not video games? I don't look at a video game the same way as a painting, I guess, but still.
