I listened to this book in audio format. This recording had about 15-20 minutes of Orson Scott Card talking about the history of this book, and the "Ender" series at the end of the book. I thought it was interesting that he stated that he thought the best way to experience his books was to listen to them in audio format. Because of his background as a playwright, he thinks his works are showcased best when they listened to instead of read.

OK I know now that Sam nixed Michel Faber as a Dutch author. I missed that exchange and read him and didn't realize I had a problem until 2 countries later :(
Fantastic Fiction lists Faber as being a writer from the Netherlands, and Goodreads says he is a Dutch writer. Anyway I did post asking if Sam would reconsider. I haven't heard back so in the meantime I am posting the book so as to keep everything straight.

It was good for what it was .... that is, there were about 15 episodes of 6-8 pages each, usually with characters that were present only in that episode. Xiaolong was illustrating how life changed in Sanghai over 50 years. The copyright page says that some of the episodes appeared originally in magazines, and that those episodes had been minimally changed to fit the format of the book. It was a change of pace read for me because I usually read long meaty novels instead of quick in-and-out stories.
I picked this one up because I read one of Xiaolong's "Inspector Chen" novels and I liked the way he tells a story. Xiaolong also writes poetry.

Boy do I get a kick out of this series. It's just good fun to read this series told from the perspective of the Chet, the German Shepard. The author captures perfectly how I imagine a dog would think. I chuckled throughout a good portion of the book. It was a nice change of pace!
