Grab your gear and suit up, it's time we all tackled Mt. TBR!

Duration: 1/1 - 12/31/11
Rules: Read 5-25 books from Mt. TBR; oldest books first.
**After reading 2 of your oldest TBR adds**, you can move on to more recently added books.

Everyone participating must (1) Post your list in advance of starting, (2)** NOT make any changes once their to-from dates have been set and (3) feel a great sense of accomplishment when you reach your summit goal! :D

Evaluate the height of your Mt. TBR and your desire to tackle the beast, then pick your goal from the list below. The highest Mt. TBR will require the most reading energy to reach the summit. Are you up for it?

Mt. Everest: 8,848 metres
Read 25 books

Mt. McKinley: 6,194 metres
Read 20 books

Mt. Olympus: 2,919 metres
Read 15 books

Mt. Vesuvius: 1,281 metres
Read 10 books

Uluru: 863 metres
Read 5 books

** To sort your TBR list by age: Click on your TBR list, sort by "date added"

11/19/10 ETA: In an evil attempt to get as many people as possible to climb with me, I've edited the rules a bit ... <see full post here>

I'll allow everyone to pick 2 books added to their bookshelf within their first 6 months on GR, that they actually want to read. The month/year you joined GR is stated in your profile.

The "no changes" rule will stand. But, I'll modify it to: changes between now and 12/31/10 are allowed. No changes to your list once the challenge has officially begun on 1/1/11.

Steph (angel4492) | 29190 comments Yes, you can choose and no, they don't have to be on the same day.

I'm going to say ... out of the first 20 books added to your shelves, pick 2 to read.

Same here. Plus, my add dates on GR are all over the place. I'm always finding books I didn't know I had and adding them on here but have had for years. And books where I bought #6, 7 & 8 before #5. Eek! But since I have so many on my TBR I guess I could be selective. ;)

Desperado (lethallovely) | 1360 comments Likewise. =) I added a hella amount of books to my TBR shelf when I joined that I haven't gotten around to, so I'm happy with that. My biggest problem is say I add a new author to my list. Then I read another book by said author & hate it. So I'm forced to read this book by him/her that I added to my list.

message 17: by Steph, Serious series addict (last edited Nov 18, 2010 02:53PM) (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 29190 comments Oh my goodness, I can't let y'all bail on the challenge b/c of two books.

My reason for this is so that we all actually stick to the list we've created and take down books that are on our TBR stack in 2010. Otherwise, we will continue to change the list as we buy/add new books throughout 2011. I do the same with my challenges. But, believe me, knowing you can't change your list also offers some amount of freedom, as funny as that sounds, because your choice is gone, list is made and now you just have to read them. Just make sure you list books that you really want to read and you'll be good. :)

Ok, I've taken off my mom-cap and made my "just do it, it's for your own good" speech. I hope y'all will join us. But, it's supposed to be challenging AND fun. Not a torture method. LOL!

LOL! I feel ya. You're welcome to make your list longer, if you'd like. Just remember to stick the (newly revamped ... see above) rules. :)

I've been obsessing about this all day going over my lists and books to see which ones I know I really want to read. I'll stick with 25 books for now but if I complete that easly I'll just climb the next mountain...lol!

Steph (angel4492) | 29190 comments Great idea. I'm hoping that I'll be able to do the same. It would be wonderful to be able to "reach the summit of several mtns" next year. I know more will pop up to take their place, but at least I'd feel like I'd made a dent.

Do they all have to be UF/PNR? I don't have a problem, just want to know in advance.

See, you're already sucking me into it after I told myself "No changes? Hell no!"

I know what you mean I'm hoping to read 150 books from now until the end of 2011, thats an average of 11 books a month which isn't out of the question. I was hoping for more books read this year then I did but my long time BF and I kinda decided to take some time apart which was hard but I'm starting to bounce back now and 2011 will be better!!!!

No, they don't all have to be PNR/UF. I don't have a specific # in mind. But, the main goal is reading what you've got on your TBR, so I'm flexible on genres for this one.

Yay! My evil plan mommy voice worked! >:)

Mary C (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2490 comments I was interested until I saw that I had to list the titles here first. As soon as I list books for a challenge, they become work to me and then I don't want to read them anymore. I know I'm weird that way.

message 27: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 29190 comments No worries, Mary. I can understand. You're welcome anytime, if you change your mind.

I've only had a couple of "can't change lists" challenges and thankfully they've actually been a motivator to get me to read those I have passed on for whatever reason. The key is to list only the books you know you'll want to read. :)

Wan (wanwaddell) | 612 comments Steph, question -- are we supposed to post just the PNR/UF here or anything goes?

message 36: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 29190 comments Since this challenge is to help tackle your TBR list, all genres are allowed. But, since our group's main focus is PNR/UF I like for people to include as many of those as possible.

Also, don't forget, changes to your list are allowed up until 12/31/10, then no more.

Steph (angel4492) | 29190 comments I'm on my phone, but from what I can see the books on your list are all fine. No need to change any b/c of genre, unless it's your choice.

Wan (wanwaddell) | 612 comments Thanks.

Stacy (stacybinnj) | 55 comments I'm glad we can use other genres. I'm a big Mystery/Suspense reader so I've got as ton of those on my shelves. I want to read the rest of Kelley Armstrong's Otherworld series so I'll put those up as well. But mainly I think I want to put up books that I think otherwise I might not get around to.

Awesomevegan (AKA JenReads) (awesomevegan) | 468 comments Yay all genres... hmmm. I will have to make my list. I am working on it. I want to see if I can make this list a mix of new series, started series, and even some stand alones. It will be mostly PNR most likely anyway.

Valorie | 446 comments I'm in! I'll evaluate my mountain and post a list later!

Wan (wanwaddell) | 612 comments I'm breaking down. I can't wait to read the Alien Huntress Series next year. The books are staring me in my face. I have to change my listing again one last time.

message 43: by Raine (new)

Raine I'm in, I'll post a list later, I have so much to choose from.

Steph (angel4492) | 29190 comments LOL @ Wan! :) Go for it, you have until 12/31/10.

Steph (angel4492) | 29190 comments Yay! Welcome, Valorie & Raine!

Awesomevegan (AKA JenReads) (awesomevegan) | 468 comments I feel all of you. I am still working on my list too. Maybe I will post it after my birthday or Christmas. I need to see if I get any books or giftcards and what I can afford to buy soon. I have so many TBRs I don't even own but want to read badly this next year. :)

I'm in the same boat. I don't own most of the books on my TBR shelf & I can't get alot of them from the library. My list is going to depend on how many gift cards I get for Xmas.

That's why I'm not posting yet! I would end up posting, get excited about it and read before the challenge starts. No waiting for me, I'm all about instant gratification, lol.

Sandra | 23908 comments That's certainly a big reason my list is empty at the moment. LOL. It's a wait and see approach.
