October's Build Your Own Challenge - No Restrictions!

Which classics are you planning to read next year, Mollie?

I'm going to choose some from my to-reads labeled "classics", I don't know yet the duration of the challenge but I hope to read at least 3 of these:
The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot
The Best Short Stories of Jack London
Dune/Dune Messiah/Children of Dune by Frank Herbert
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
The Scarlet Pimpernel by Emmuska Orczy
The Hunchback of Notre Dame by Victor Hugo
Finnegans Wake by James Joyce
The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton
The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

1: Black and White by Jackie Kessler & Caitlin Kittredge- Finished 03 Oct
2: Married By Morning by Lisa Kleypas- Finished 04 Oct
3: Undercover Princess by Suzanne Brockmann Finished 06 October

I've a lot more labeled "classics" than those listed above, but these are the ones I've not yet read (except for Frankenstein which I'm doing this month).
You can peek here:
Mollie's Classics shelf

I'm actually in the process of reading Frankenstein for my book club on the 12th...I'm finding it very tedious.

Bekah, I hope it gets better for you.
Laura, that's why I haven't attempted Frankenstein yet.
Mollie, I mainly read class/gothic horror or classic fantasy/adventure. It has to be something that will keep my interest. I am trying to branch out, though.

Have you tried Edgar Allen Poe? That's the only thing that comes to mind when I think of your categories. Victor Hugo also might be a fit.

Already making changes (LOL). Progress as of October 7, 2010: 2/10
Still open for suggestions on my tbd's
1. Re-read something first read more than 25 years ago: Dracula by Bram Stoker
2. Try one recommended by Mom: Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
3. An author I've not read before:
4. A book that is released this October:
5. An ebook, perhaps Size Matters by Stephanie Julian or The Picture of Dorian Gray
6. Something utterly silly tbd
7. Something with Ten or October in the title or theme tbd
8. Something with a Halloween reference in the Title or Theme tbd
9. A paranormal romance tbd
10. Something referring to a disguise or costume in the Title or Theme tbd

I am a huge fan of Poe. I don't know if Victor Hugo is my cup of tea, but thanks for the recommendation. Actually, I've found a whole lot of classics in my area of interest. And many are free on Kindle! :)

Her book Halfway to the Grave starts an AWESOME series. I think you'd like it.

Her book Halfway to the Grave starts an AWESOME series...."
Yes, I've read a ton of her work. I agree with you. I wanted to branch out into things I'm not so comfortable with, that's why there's only one spot for a paranormal romance on the list. I've got some romances coming from the public library, perhaps one of them may turn out to be PNR.

Yeah, isn't it grand! Today I got these freebies: The Picture of Dorian Gray and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. I'm thinking to fit them into this challenge.

That, like Dracula and Frankenstein, is a story so deeply ingrained in our culture that many more have heard something about it than have actually read it. Congratulations on being in the know!

I know, I usually manage a book a day, depending on the book, and apart from "Touch of the Wolf", which was just pants, I enjoyed all of them so was probably reading them really fast!

I'm doing a classics challenge on another site beginning early next year; should we do something like one here, Frankenstein would certainly fit. I've already got 8 classics I've not tried before earmarked for that.
