Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) if you check the www.thehob.org there is some really good casting comments and they picked a young, African-American girl I'd never heard of to play Rue that I think will fit the part prefectly.

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) Seeing the opinions on Katniss being "gift-wrapped" really gave me some perspective (excuse spelling, I'm exhausted) on the issue. I honestly think that Gary, Suzanna, and Debra etc. have some chances to redeem themselves. You really do have to build the cast around Katniss, and more people would be interested in the movie seeing as a fairly well-known, excellent, actress is in the lead. It will get a wider audience as well. Many adults who might have dismissed the Hunger Games but loved Winter's Bone might come to see the movie.
And as I've said before, I really do think we'll get better co-stars with an older Katniss.

As far as Willow Smith as Rue, I will give Gary Debra and Suzanne no more chances and boycott the movie.

Hutcherson and Pettyfer vying for Peeta is not an option. Again, no more chances.

Evancho as Prim might be good. We don't know if she can act or not though. She does look like Prim though.

ANd jsut to confirm the appearance issues, Jennifer's hair will be dyed, there is a special diet to go on for actors who need the emaciated body for their acting.

Yeah, Im expecting a Hunter/Peeta announcement later this week as well.

I hope they dont cast Willow! Oh my goodness, just because she looks like Rue, doesnt mean she should be. I mean, they didnt cast someone who matches Katniss' description-they selected her on her acting ability.
So why cast Willow just because she is little and African American?

Edit: jackie Evancho? White and blonde?
Really? Really, Garry Ross?

message 555: by Kate (new)

Kate | 8205 comments Prim, Jess, not Rue.

I can't say I'd be happy if Willow Smith got the part, because she doesn't even really look like it, let alone the rest, (Besides, now that we have an older Katniss, it will look like a mother-daughter instead of sister type relationship.) but why would that affect your opinion of her father, chandloski?

message 556: by Jordan (new)

Jordan (flyinglogicmonkey) | 2426 comments Willow as Rue? Nuh uh.

Anybody seen this ?

Dear Readers,
We have found Katniss.
As the author, I went into the casting process with a certain degree of trepidation. Believing your heroine can make the leap from the relative safety of the page to the flesh and bones reality of the screen is something of a creative act of faith. But after watching dozens of auditions by a group of very fine young actresses, I felt there was only one who truly captured the character I wrote in the book. And I’m thrilled to say that Jennifer Lawrence has accepted the role.

In her remarkable audition piece, I watched Jennifer embody every essential quality necessary to play Katniss. I saw a girl who has the potential rage to send an arrow into the Gamemakers and the protectiveness to make Rue her ally. Who has conquered both Peeta and Gale’s hearts even though she’s done her best to wall herself off emotionally from anything that would lead to romance. Most of all, I believed that this was a girl who could hold out that handful of berries and incite the beaten down districts of Panem to rebel. I think that was the essential question for me. Could she believably inspire a rebellion? Did she project the strength, defiance and intellect you would need to follow her into certain war? For me, she did.

Jennifer’s just an incredible actress. So powerful, vulnerable, beautiful, unforgiving and brave. I never thought we’d find somebody this amazing for the role. And I can’t wait for everyone to see her play it.

Thank you all for sharing in this journey and may the odds be ever in your favor!

Love,
Suzanne Collins

Kate | 8205 comments When Suzanne Collins describes the perfect Katniss as "vulnerable" I think we have a problem.

message 558: by Jordan (new)

Jordan (flyinglogicmonkey) | 2426 comments I disagree. The Katniss we see in Mockingjay and even Catching Fire is very vulnerable. I think in THG, she is vulnerable. The difference is, we see her through her own perspective and she does not view herself as vulnerable. She tries so hard to put up a wall so nobody knows, but she's not as tough as she thinks she is. Does that make sense at all?

message 559: by Taylor (new)

Taylor (taylorjaylene) | 4557 comments Absolutely. I agree with you.

message 560: by Kate (new)

Kate | 8205 comments I think she's naive, in way over her head, tender, and scared, but not vulnerable. Vulnerable does not have to do with being tough, it's whether or not you allow something to happen to you. By taking action, she makes herself less vulnerable-not stronger or tougher, just not a sitting target.

message 561: by natalie (new)

natalie | 5047 comments I agree with both of you, if that's possible.

Its not what you know, its who you know.

message 563: by Kate (new)

Kate | 8205 comments Yes and no. Often, it is just overbearing parents, and often it is just their connections. Other times, these kids really want to do whatever they really want to do, and while having parents in the industry obviously helps, the parents aren't pushing them.

We don't know whether they are "You have to do this" type parents or "You want to do this? Let's see if I can help" type parents. (Or at least I don't. But I'm not really up to date with pup culture, so you could easily no something more than me) I'm hoping for the latter, although the former is quite likely.

But anyway, I'm not saying it's fair that kids of famous people have an easier time gaining recognition for themselves, and I definitely think it's awful when it's the parents who want them to do whatever they're doing, but if it's really what they want to do, then I would actually think less of the parents for NOT letting them. Although personally, I think being so famous so young is really bad for the kids.

Jia | 170 comments Then they become corrupted, case in point, Cyrus, Spears, Lohan, the list could go on and on...

message 565: by Frank (new)

Frank I've been gone for a while and have not been keeping up with all of this. It seems that Jennifer Lawrence playing Katniss is the most important thing I missed.

I think she looks a bit old, but I think she can pull it off. Sure Katniss has dark hair, grey eyes, etc. But, hair dye and contacts are film-makers best friends. Also, as long as the acting is good and not corny, or flat out bad, I will be happy with whoever plays Katniss.

message 566: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) At this point I'm just hoping it'll be better than the Percy Jackson movie.

message 567: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 4295 comments Mod
(Haven't read or seen Percy Jackson. Dont hate me.)

I think, even thought Lawrence is older than Katniss, we-as fans-are lucky.
She is only four years older, and has proven she can act. At least she wont pull a 'Kristen Stewart in Twilight' on us.

Rebekah Faith (musicalradiance) | 6788 comments (You keep saying that Jess- you really should get on that. At least read them. :) lolz)

Yeah, at least we're spared that.

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) So true. So so true.

message 570: by Kate (new)

Kate | 8205 comments (Read them. Don't watch the movie. It's a waste of time)

I'm less upset about their choice of actress than about their attitude towards the choosing, if that makes sense. I have no doubt she'll do a good job, but just like in Percy Jackson, it's going to lose something for the main characters being too old. That said, that was one of the smallest problems in Percy Jackson, so maybe it's not the best comparison....

Yes, she probably will pull it off quite well. But is she the best Katniss out there? I don't think so.

^That really irritates me, especially after the casting of Jennifer.

The positive? Alex Pettyfer is not listed with the possible Peeta's.

The negative? We could get Lucas Till and Liam Hemsworth as Peeta and Gale. Can we move away from the Miley Cyrus former costars, please? Not to mention that all of the Gale frontrunners beside Liam are Disney/Nickelodeon stars.

I really hope that some of the secondary characters are unknowns.

message 572: by Rebekah Faith (new)

Rebekah Faith (musicalradiance) | 6788 comments They aren't ALL bad, but at least Alex isn't listed- he's been in to many movies for his own good.

I was just coming over to mention that post. *is scaaared*

Anybody seen this? Max Adler, the bully from Glee, is interested in playing Cato. It could work, I suppose.

message 576: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) No offense to all the actors in line for tributes, and I'm sure they'll do fine (most of them), but I hope we get some unknowns cast as tributes. The Hunger Games would be a great vehicle for an unknowns career and I don't want a nuch of lame cameos rather than great acting

message 577: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 4295 comments Mod
I can only see Max Adler as Cato because he has already played the 'villain'-the evil school bully. Thats why everyone agrees, because weve already seen him in such a role.
I say no. I dont want to think about Karofsky and Kurt when Im watching Cato hunt down Katniss and Peeta. Does that make sense?

message 578: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) Absoloutly. Although I wouldn't mind thinking about Darren Criss while Cato gets brutally murdered. That's the only violent part they are really going to have to dumb down.

message 579: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) Yeah they probably would. That's a good idea for those who want a more blood happy film while there's the few squeamish fans that want a good movie with minimal blood.

Two of the greatest movies I have seen in my entire life.

If Tarantino directed, I would object, but I wouldn't be thrilled either.

message 585: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) I wouldn't judge someone by previous movie. Yes it is a contributing factor, but often times, drectors would like to break their mold. Suzanne Collins has workedin TV/Film before and I'm guessing he'll do a good job.

Rarietty | 319 comments NO! I already heard this in a Youtube video, and I stared at the screen for about 5 minutes with my month open. I really don't think either of them look like they fit the role, and as far as acting, I don't really see either of them playing such as important role.

Plus side, I actually cried watching Bridge to Terabithia, which Josh starred in. : /
